Eventhough name alone wont make one to cherish true Iranian values & is not the full remedy but yet a good tiny step in the right direction.

Atleast in the case of children & future generation. . My Dad had 7 brothers & 2 sisters. In 1943 he was a young officer of the army & after my grandpa passed away he took 3 of his younger brothers&sister who had non-Persian 1st names to sabt ahval and changed theirs to Manou...,Arde.. & Mina and ever since then every offspring&cousins from my Dad side girls or boys have Persian names. btw , my dad kept his own non-Persian name due to some army rule. complicated but yah

We should not try to artificially homogenize any group or country.  We are like different flowers in a garden.  If anyone feels compelled to pass judgment on others, then use the content of their character, and not their incidental name, to form an opinion.

Like *Adib Masumian*, my name has an Arabic root too, and I like its meaning.  I’m not a Muslim either but that shouldn’t make a difference.

In my opinion, Afshin_Afshar has the best comments in this thread.  Let's focus on important issues rather than names.  Having said that, this blog reminds me of one of my relatives who is 46 year old and his name is "Gholam Reza". He has a beef with his dad since his dad has a modern name even though he belongs to a previous generation but then he named his kid "Gholam Reza".   About my last name; Hojjati, one of my cousins was looked at unfavorably by some people since they thought that somehow it is related to "Hojjatieh" which is a very reactionary group. But there is no relation between my last name and Hojjatieh.

My first name is Arabic

But I like that name for what it means. Will I be frowned upon if I don't get it legally changed? ;) I'm not a Muslim if that makes any difference.

I wish more people would listen to you -- I cringe every time I hear about an Iranian figure in the news with an Islamic name. But even if they have a name like "Javad" (as in Javad Zarif,the former Iranian Ambassador to the UN), the monsters at the IRI make them be introduced as "Muhammad Javad Zarif."

Pathetic.

And Afshin, nobody is diminishing the contributions of any Iranian in the struggle for freedom. The idea is for Iraians to use ethnic names (whether it be Azari, Kurd or Persian), so long as it's not ISLAMIC/ARABIC!

And for those Arabs who live in Ahvaz, well, they can use Arabic names of course, after all they're Arabs, but why would a Persian living in north Tehran name their kid "Gholam Reza" or "Amir Abbas?"

Just sad and ignorant.

I was given an Arabic name, and since I was able to read and write I remember hating my name. I am so proud of our heritage the Persians I can cry aloud for loosing it to self seving Arabs. I have named both of my children the persian kings name and by god they are so proud of themselves being named after a persian king I get jelous sometimes. Chang is good, I will chand mine for you, for me, for Persia. Love.

Allow me to play devil's advocate here!

My name, as you can see, is as Persian as they come and I am happy with it. I have lived in the US for over 30 years and I have never taken on an American name like Jeff, Fred, Bob, etc. This is the name with which everyone knows me.

Now, my question to you all is: don't you think this could be a dividing issue amongst all of us Iranians of different ethnicities?

Iranians of all different ethnicities have died or are suffering in IRI jails; Azaries, Kurds, Turkmens, Balouchies, Lors, Gilaks, etc.

Does the fact that they have ethnic names make their struggle as Iranians any less significant?

Look at the first and last names in the list below. They were all killed or arrested during the demonstrations.

Neda's last name was "Aghasoltan". A last name with Arabic roots. Look at Naser, Mustafa, Ali, Mehdi, Yaghoub, etc.

They were all Iranians who gave their lives for what they believed was their birth right  ..... freedom.

Let's not diminish their legacy with petty conversations that may divide us as a people.

2)  Naser Amirnejad, Aerospace PhD student, was murdered during the attack on the Tehran University dormitories on the night of Wednesday, 14 June 2009. His body was buried in his home town, one of the villages in the city of Yasouj on 19 June 2009.

3)  Mostafa Ghanian, graduate student at Tehran University, was murdered during the attack on the  Tehran University Dormitories on the night of Monday , 14 June 2009. His body was buried in his home town in Mashad on 21 June 2009.

4)  Mehdi Karami, 17, killed in Jonat Abad Street, Tehran, 15 June  2009

5)  Kianoosh Assa, chemistry student at Elm va Sanaat University, killed in Tehran

6)  Farzad Hashti, killed in Tehran

7)  Shalar Khazri, killed in Tehran

8 ) Yaghoub Barvayeh, master’s degree student in Theatre at Tehran University, shot in the head in Tehran near Lolagar mosque, died in Loghman-e-Hakim Hospital on 25 June

9)  Kaveh Alipour, killed in Tehran

10) Hossein Tahmassebi, 25, was beaten to death with batons to his chest at Nobahar street in Kermanshah on 20 June

11) Davoud Sadri, 25, killed on 15 June in Mohammad ALi Jenah Street , in front of a Basij base in Tehran.

12) Sohrab Aarabi, 19, died of gunshot wounds to his heart

13) Fatemeh Samsarian, killed during the silent march in Azadi Sqaure on 15 June, her son was also shot

14) Davood Sadri, killed in Andisheh, Karaj

15) Mohsen Ruholamini, the son of a supporter of unsuccessful presidential candidate Mohsen Rezai, died of meningitis and was returned to his family reportedly bearing marks of torture and ill-treatment

16) Amin Javadifar, a student detained on 9 July, reportedly died in detention

17) Saeed Abasi, 27 year old store manager, was shot in the head on 30 June in clear sight of his father during a protest

18) Ramin Qahremani, 30 year old who was tortured in prison and whose body was delivered to his family recently. According to the Norooz website, he was arrested in his home after agents identified him from a bank security camera. He was kept in prison and tortured for 10 days before being released. He told his mother that for several days he was suspended from his feet. He was taken to the hospital a few days before being released for internal bleeding in his chest. Ramin’s body was buried under the supervision of the police forces.

19) Alireza Eftekhari, 29 year old journalist who worked for the economic newspaper, Abrar

I mentioned about Changeez and others in another post before reading yours.Names and Shahnameh and Zoroastrian fesrtivals are some of the reasons that we Iranians kept our identity and didn't become converted to Arabs like Egyptians, Babylonians and Assyrians. IRI in the past 30 years has tried to finish the job and ecven called our ancestors idiots for observing Zoroastrian festivals which bring joy and happiness rather than Islamic weeping and sadness. When we reply with " dorood" to Salam instead of Vasslamo alayakom blah blah we make a point .

It makes us proud of our heritage and educates non persians about our history. Imagine when an American asks what eg, Mandana, Shirin, Ashkan , Bahram,  means rather obvious Arabic Islamic names.

Absolutely right about kasseh daaghtar az aash, we even have namers like Yadollah , Eynollah  or other parts or belongings of Allah which infuriated Arabs and were mocking Iranians for those names. Iranians even went so far as naming their kids after some of the invaders of tjheir country : Changeez , Eskandar,......

What is in a name?

 That movement began to form about 50 years ago, I would say. We redisvovered our pre-Islamic identity, I guess. You still do not see very many grandpa's, with names such as "Babak","Ramin","Kaveh". These names belong to people under 50 in most cases.

 Come to think of it, I know many Mohammads, and Alis, and Jafars, who named their kids Persian names, but hardly any Kambiz or Pardis, who gave his children Islamic names.

What always amazed me, was people naming their kids after tyrants. I never understood this."Changeez"? "Taymour"? "Eskandar"? (Sayd Ali?)

 These were not tyrants, according to these people, or they just like the way these names sound? (Adolf has a nice ring to it too)

 Anyway. It is a free country (where I am, at least, is). Name your kid anything you want.

Thankfully, my name is pure Persian from the Ashkanian Empire, but why do so many Iranians name their kids arabic and islamic names? Do you know any arabs with names like Dariush, Koroush, Kayvov, etc., etc.......... Do you know any arabs by the name of Gholam Dariush, or Gholam Khosro?

Why are we Irnanians always "kaseh dogh tar az aash"?
