Iran has commissioned its first indigenously built frigate, Jamaran, during a ceremony at Bandar Abbas on 19 February.

Built under the Mowj project, Jamaran is referred to locally as a 'destroyer', although the design is based on the Iranian Navy's existing 1960s-vintage British-built Alvand-class (Vosper Mk 5) frigates.

According to local state-owned media reports, the ship displaces 1,420-1,500 tons, which is the size of a light frigate or corvette.

MOSCOW — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has urged Russia to delay launching Iran's nuclear plant until Tehran proves that it's not pursuing atomic weapons.

Clinton made the statement Thursday when asked about Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's statement that Iran's first nuclear reactor is set to be launched this summer.

Clinton said Iran is entitled to civil atomic energy, but added that it would be premature to go forward with any nuclear project when Tehran has yet to prove the peaceful nature of its program.

Iran is ready to deliver 1,200 kilogrammes of low-enriched uranium in one go in return for fuel for a Teheran reactor but the exchange must be inside the country.

The hardline Jawan newspaper quoted nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi as saying on Wednesday.

Salehi said Iran had earlier proposed to deliver its low-enriched uranium (LEU) in batches of 400 kilogrammes (880 pounds).

‘But this has no technical justification because those who want to produce the (20 percent enriched) fuel say that this amount has no economic justification,’ Salehi said in an interview with the newspaper.

The Feast of Fire comes on the eve of the Persian new year, but religious leaders had told Iranians celebrating it was "un-Islamic".

There were a number of clashes between young people and the police across the capital, a Tehran police chief said.

Opposition leaders had told people not to protest during the festival.
