Inside the mind of the Texas shooter

The situation of the Texas army base shooter could not have been any more Ironic! I mean if you saw this in a Hollywood movie you'd say the script writer had too much of a wild imagination.

A U.S. Army officer named Nidal Malik Hasan; a trained psychiatrist; who dressed in traditional Arab garb inside a freaking Army base when he went out to get coffee.

Obama's 1953 Moment

As a lifelong Democrat, I voted for Obama in the last elections. I was glad to see the eight years of Bush madness come to an end and looked forward to seeing a sane U.S. foreign policy toward the rest of the world. But, when it comes to dealing with Iran after this year’s post-election uprising, I think that Obama is making a mistake and is placing the United States at the wrong side of history once again.

A few points....

Rather than commenting on different blogs about certain subjects and responding to individual posts, I decided to post this blog to let others know my opinions and line of thinking with regard to those subjects. Hopefully this will stop name calling and questioning my loyalties, etc…I realize that I don’t have to justify my opinions but I choose to do so out of candor.

First and foremost is the issue of support of US or any outside force for the opposition groups in Iran.

Green Revolution will come

The Islamic Republic is taking a wrong path. They are becoming more centralized in power, which is good news for the revolutionary minded people and bad news for the reformists. For a few months now I am holding a theory that Iran is headed towards a absolute dictatorial state with no hope of turning back. To do so they have alienated some of the population to a point that for the first time in Islamic Republic history, demonstrations will not be an easy task for the system to control. And as many are aware, demonstrations happen regularly in Iran.

Kabul Diaries: the bar

My alarm was set for 5:45 AM so that I would be ready for 6:45 when we all would be driven to work. I made my way to the kitchen at 6:15 to have breakfast. The big table was set with cereals, jam, honey, pomegranates, honeydew melons, bananas, apples, grapes, bread, milk and different kinds of juices. The cook had already finished his morning prayers and was preparing some pancakes for those who wanted some. For someone who normally has a cappuccino and an apple for breakfast, this was a big temptation. I had a bowl of cereals with milk and some bananas and finished off with some melon.

Please select an Assembly of 30 Iranians

People listen. This is important. Someone has to formally ask it, and I am doing it.

We need 30 Iranians to represent Iran. We need to have 30 people who have shown that they have achieved above the call of duty and put Iran above everything else.

Each of the 30 has to be able to be special and have a successful life abroad. He or she must have a safe domain and be willing to sacrifice their time for representing Iran in an interim government.

El cuarto de Tula

I‘m walking alone in the streets of this Caribbean city. I got out of the hotel and began walking, without a place to go.

It’s hot and humid in the city. You are in a constant state of perspiration. It reminds me of the American South. No, it’s even worse. The white cotton shirt is soaked and sticks to my body.

Why say Death?

Here I am on my day off, listening to the radio. I am an old fogey, and love to listen to Gold on DAB in England.

Why am I saying this, because only when your bog standard radio says something about Iran (and we have all been waiting for this day), that we can say there has been some media penetration.

So what does the news say? That the protesters are shouting "Death to dictator". Up to that moment of the news, I was saying, "hey we did it, our country's situation is being heard".

Writing Young Love: J'ai perdu mon coeur à Chicoutimi (I lost my heart in Chicoutimi)

One summer, I went to study French in Chicoutimi, a small town on the Saguenay River in Quebec, Canada. Darius' contribution to the Writing Young Love series inspired me to submit mine (English translation follows).

Je suis allée au bord
De la rivière Saguenay
Et j'ai regardé longtemps là-dedans

En revenant en ville
Ma poitrine s'est mis
A me faire mal - mon coeur n'était plus là!

Carrot Cake Muffins :)

I just made these carrotcake muffins. I got the recipe from one of my Mom's old cook books. The recipe was actually for a carrot cake but I modified it by putting half the sugar and changing one cup of the flour to wheat flour. I also added an extra teaspoon of cinnamon. I like cinnamon for it's aroma, flavor, calming, and fat burning properties :o :) Also, instead of the usual cream cheese frosting (which is always yummy), I put a simple glaze on top.

CARROT CAKE MUFFINS

3 cups of shredded carrots
4 eggs

The Iranian Republic: How its people are being gradually pushed to the brink

As an American, I'm struck by an observation in an article about the changing nature of the opposition and its demands since the rigged election. As happened in our country in 1776, it is the government's ham-handed, post-election tactics (admittedly much worse and over a much shorter perior) that continues to widen and radicalizes Iran's people toward a point of no return.

Religion and the Marketplace

Islam is on its march of death on many fronts. A very dangerous front has been recently re-opened at the United Nations (UN) by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the largest group of nations within the UN, by introducing a new resolution.

The resolution under consideration—Defamation of Religions—aims to enlist the power and prestige of the UN in defense of religion by declaring religions to be immune from the general discourse practiced in non-religious domains.

Iran’s Year Zero

Wikipedia: “The idea behind Year Zero is that all culture and traditions within a society must be completely destroyed or discarded and a new revolutionary culture must replace it, starting from scratch. All history of a nation or people before Year Zero is largely irrelevant, as it will (as an ideal) be purged and replaced from the ground up.

In Cambodia, teachers and intellectuals especially were singled out and executed as part of the above mentioned purge aspect of Year Zero.”

I am deeply moved and impressed by Ali's undertaking and by SCIENCE actually allocating its most coveted space to publish this letter.

Iranian patriots or Vichy traitors

The saying goes one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Does such duality hold true when it comes to patriotism?

Writing Young Love: kissing all the toads*

For the Writing Young Love series.

Episode One:

It was my sixteenth birthday. Ten young people sat around a table at Tehran’s Chattanooga Café on Pahlavi Avenue. We were all in love. Holding Farzad’s hand, my classmate Shirin yelled: “Don’t forget to make a wish!” I closed my eyes and just before I blew the candle I squeezed his hand and wished to be married to him, the love of my life, some day.

Episode Two:

A memorable evening of International artists and religious leaders ; Hindus, Moslems, Jews, Catholics, and Sikhs who came together to call for human rights and religious freedom in Iran; truly uplifting.

We have nothing to loose but our unpaid wages

Every day for the last few weeks Iranian workers have been protesting, at times in their thousands - at their workplaces, outside government offices and provincial offices complaining about job losses, non-payment of wages, privatisation ... Universities have been the scene of daily protests and ordinary people have used every opportunity, even football matches, to express their opposition to the regime.
