iranian.com's 15th birthday present

I was on my way to a bar in Budapest last night to watch the Spain-Portugal match (how about that David Villa? My god he's fantastic!). I was wearing my vintage iranian.com t-shirt. It felt special. I remembered that fifteen years ago this week, this site was born as THE IRANIAN in my studio on the 28th floor of Waterside Plaza overlooking the East River in New York. Yaadetooneh? :)

I began thinking that growing up as a kid, the coolest thing was to wear a t-shirt with a major sport logo; Adidas was the favorite of my generation. Here I was strolling in a European capital proudly showing off  MY (and iranian.com shareholders' :) logo on my chest. I thought, wow... iranian.com has t-shirts just like Adidas. That's fricken awesome!

Well, my illusions of grandeur abruptly ended when I realized that, um, I'm the only one who wears an iranian.com t-shirt. Kheet shodam badjoor.

I'll tell you what's really great though.

(Completely by accident,) on iranian.com's 15th anniversary we're staging a concert for arguably the greatest and most influential Iranian rock band. They have set the standard for their field. Most admirably, they have been a voice with a conscience in this "Green Age". Now THAT's something to be proud about.

I'm talking of course about Kiosk and their concert in San Francisco this Sunday. That kid from Abadan can't believe he's collaborating with the coolest rockers around. Thank you Arash Sobhani and the gang!

And thank YOU all. iranian.com is the cup, you're the wine.

Ah, yes, the good old days.   JJ, you just GO RIGHT AHEAD and wear that T-shirt!  You've every reason to be very proud of the work you started fifteen years ago: you had a vision and you've been steadfastly seeing it through. Your website is a great resource for not just Iranians, but for all humans.   Keep up the good work--and live long and prosper, to channel a Vulcan.  (And by the way, love the photo of the outside window and door of your Budapest flat!)

You and your team have done an excellent job of growing and managing this site. Iranian dotcom has improved its form and content over time. Hoping to see another 15 years of iranian dotcom.

Also, thanks for saving millions of dollars of US taxpayers' money by helping people in emotional and psychological distress who may have ended up in emergency rooms (very costly).

It has occurred to me that , since this site is a cross between Hotel California (which one can never leave) and predominantly and very evidently an asylum, sort of "Care in the Community" project, have you thought of contacting WHO's mental health section for a grant to continue your international services?

Happy Birthday Iranian.com!

You have worked so hard on this Jahanshah, and Iranian.com is a truly unique and special forum as a result. Khasteh nabashi! In a few weeks, we will also be ending three years of blogging and community publishing on Iranian.com. One of the things that has made this medium so powerful is the intensity, depth, and the flavor of hundreds and thousands of people having contributed to its content and dialogue. Thank you for continuing to take care of Iranian.com with all that you have. It is an extremely valuable asset as a result. Happy Birthday!

I doubt if there is a better way for anyone us who come here, to release our frustrations, anger while engaging in classy and constructive and educational debates. In essence you have provided us with this gift of Democracy and freedome in putting out there what is in our mind.

Many of us owe a huge debt of gratitude for letting our Zaboons to be opened , our fingers to get moving , to tap on those keyboards so hard and write things that we never dared to write before.

Thank you. Thank You. Thank You.

BTW. Don't keep the "jeegar" behind the counter waiting too long.

Mr JJ you done a good job starting and putting up with this so far.

I found this web site very EDUCATIONAL but it does not matter at times it gets boring. I also admire your tolerance and patience. Not going in length to explain to you I remembered and practiced one of the important lessons (called freedom and democracy).

Also on behalf all the rights, in the middles, lefts and gays (and of course lesbians! hm yes them too!!!!) like to wish your web site a happy birthday.

Dear Friends,

I've had internet problems all week. I'm in an internet cafe at Budapest's central station. I opened this blog after more than 12 hours without a connection and I'm overwhelmed by your kind messages.

I wonder what the woman behind the counter here is thinking. "Chera een yaroo daareh ashk mirizeh... nanash mordeh? baabaash mordeh?..."

I'm touched and moved. Thank you.

Will the nostalgia of today's bygone days be stronger or weaker?

Will the readers and bloggers be debating the same topics?

Will I ever get to take pictures of Iran and post them on IC?

I don't know, but thanks JJ for keeping it going and Happy b'day Iranian.com.

MY Memory........

by ardavan on

When I discovered Iranian.com I was only 14 years old in 1995.  I remember sending a check (can't remember it was either 10, 15 or 20 bucks) in order to receive emails from Jahanshah, also can't remember was the email sent 5 times a week or more?  I remember there was some sort of a controversy, something about Islam I think, and some people got mad and demanded that their subscriptions end and to get their money back.  Iranian.com has always been controversial from day 1.  The only reason that I signed up for a subscription of Iranian.com was because the internet was really slow back then and when I was going to site like BBC or cnn.com it really took a long time to load and I thought how great it is to receive email which you can open right away without the stupid upload time. Yep the dial tone era.:) you guys remember the "eeeaaa shoooo" sound of the phone whenever you tried to connect to the internet?  I came with my parents to USA when I was 10 so my Farsi was really weak, and Iranian.com was and is a great site for me because I get to keep up with the news on Iran.

Ahhhh Memories...........

Jahan, do you still have the list of the people who paid for a subscription of Iranian.com?

Congrats and thank you for a truly unique site where we can speak our mind about our beloved motherland.

May we all learn to be tolerant and forgiving for if we do not, the Iran we know and love may not be...for much longer.
