08-Mar-2012 (62 comments)

25-Feb-2012 (3 comments)

06-Feb-2012 (3 comments)

Advice to women in Arab world

17-Dec-2011 (2 comments)
The emergence of Islamic identity is just one of the potential threats to women's status in the wake of the Arab Spring according to Iranian-born Sussan Tahmasebi who is working to pass on the lessons learnt by the women's movement in her native Iran. The strengthening of Islam, division among secular and Islamic women and a widespread belief that the quest for women's rights should be put on hold until after the revolution all could pose a threat to women's status in countries like Egypt, Tunisia and Libya, says Tahmasebi>>>

Daadan vs Kardan

May be sex is perceived as a trade in our culture

11-Dec-2011 (15 comments)
I ask my fellow Iranian sisters, mothers, girl friends to stop saying “daadan” which implies trading an act of sex for something else. Why not just say love making? Or having sex? Or even "kardan"? Are we just natural born prostitutes? Although I find the term used mostly by those grown up in Iran, it is gaining momentum here in the West in the Iranian communities abroad. May be it’s due to the influence of massively growing migration of Internet-assisted-newlywed Iranian women>>>

17-Oct-2011 (11 comments)

An awkward Nobel Peace Prize

This year’s crop is not impressive for several reasons

10-Oct-2011 (2 comments)
For the most part, the Oslo judges get it right when awarding the Nobel Peace Prize. From Albert Schweitzer to Aung San Suu Kyi, there has been a score of extraordinary awardees. Other choices have been more dubious, even absurd (Henry Kissinger) or perplexing (Obama). Also, a number of lackluster recipients receive a nod from the Oslo committee for not always valid political reasons>>>

WOMEN

Colossal Inequity

These are not good times to be a woman and live in Iran

25-Aug-2011 (2 comments)
Since the establishment of the Islamic Regime in Iran and a harsh enforcement of “Sharia Law” on the society, women have been the target of colossal inequity. The women of Iran differ from their counterparts in the Middle East; they defy boundaries. While the Parliament of Iran has been the instrument of granting a landslide of sweeping civil, legal, and family rights to men, women have been going door to door to fight for their rights>>>

18-Aug-2011 (one comment)

26-Jul-2011 (11 comments)

Mullahs are clawing back gains Iranian women have achieved

13-Jul-2011 (7 comments)
Another gender war is brewing and, fascinatingly, firebrand President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad emerges as the voice of liberal dissent! President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said plans to segregate male and female students at Iranian universities must be halted, drawing another battle line in his ongoing tussle with traditionalist rivals. Even a diehard zealot like the President has realised that any prudent person would be unable to work within the limitations of the Iranian clergy subjugated constitution>>>

Story of five women sharing unfruitful love lives

08-Jul-2011 (16 comments)
Rosvaie, or scandal, is the name of a new play by Saam Theatre Company in London. The play is the love child of the director, Sousan Farrokhnia, and actors who never had any acting experience or training before. Farrokhnia, with more than 30 years of experience in theatre, once again proved to be a master in her field, turning the female cast into professionals in less than 6 weeks. The play is the story of five women sharing their unfruitful love lives with each other and the audience>>>

We should not allow Iran to erode international standards in any arena, including sports

10-Jun-2011 (64 comments)
The regime running Iran should get no credit for the advancement of women. That credit goes to the progressive people of that country for resisting and circumventing a fanatical government which has made every attempt to block their progress by putting them on unequal footing. Forced hijab is the most powerful symbol of that policy. Second, Iran should not be considered an Islamic state -- whatever that means. A prerequisite for a person to be a true Muslim is free choice and since Iran doesn't allow that opportunity to its people, it fails the Islam test>>>
