“A man’s ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.” Albert Einstein

The following are the story highlights of Alain de Botton. He is one of the many “Doctor of Happiness” with savvy television and entrepreneurial skill, perfectly fit to sell one of his many scholarly deficient books to make the reader “feel” better. He gave up pursuing his Ph.D. so that he can write books on “philosophy of everyday life” for “general Public”! Alain de Botton states as posted at IC under « ATHEISM 2.0 : Alain de Botton on What Atheists Can Learn From Religion. »

by Darius Kadivar on 02/26/2012 - 09:10, the following :

Athiests are right to disbelieve religious dogma. But he says they make the mistake of rejecting the benefits religion brings.

Religion offers consolation, ritual, spirituality, that atheists can adopt

Religions have been the most successful educational movements.Christianity for centuries served as an ideology of conquest and subjugation, he should remember what happened and for how long, just recently, in his neck of the woods called Northern Ireland.

The Jihadist of IRR and Moslem world and what have they done in the name of their allah needs no explanation. He should also read his Bible, new and old, and tell the truth about what is says. Take a very close look at Tanakh and other Masoretic Texts, Quran and tens of thousands hadith.

It is not hard to see that there is some inherent connection between adherence to theism and the proclivity to commit atrocities. You may not agree with the causality but there is sufficient evidence since the time man invented the he god, over 4000 years ago.

I do agree that religion and belief in god are not exactly the same, but if you, as he is, are talking about Abrahamic culture, then you must believe in existence of some god, and you cannot separate one from the other.

Can you be good without religion-god? Can people have morality without religion? According to Alain de Botton religion offers consolation, ritual, spirituality. Can you be happy, enjoy, feel comfort and consolation, and even spiritual by CELEBRATION THE RITUAL OF NO-ROOZ? Do you REALLY need a god or religion to “celebrate” the birth of spring? Every newborn baby is an atheist; an atheist is a person without any god. They don’t have an allah, a god, holly sprit, a cow, or wooden mask to worship and be obedient to.

Show me what religion and how it has helped and paved the way of the emancipation of humanity, discovery, invention, innovation, creativity and advancement of science? “With or without religion, you should have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.”

Steven Weinberg
