Green Nowruz Suggestion

This year Iranians should change some of their old customs to a new and meaningful symbolism. We need to upgrade some of our traditions so it reflects our generation’s desires and struggles to the future generations.

This year we need to change Haji Firuz facial paints from black to green. From now on, Hajii firooz should sing the coming of green along with spring. Green, which is now the symbol of equality, freedom, and tolerance. I think it is time to upgrade from black to green for good.

What do you think?

 1-Amoo Nowruz or Haaji Firouz??

2-If you have time,I'll suggest you read 2 books on Middle East & Iranian mythology, one by Dr Bahar & the other one by Dr Mazdapoor. The black face has nothing to do with "demeaning black-face",symbolically it is the personification of DEATH / God of death /God of underworld on earth(like Hades in Greek mythology).

Dumb "Haaji" firooz & black face

by SamSamIIII on

has nothing to do with true Norooz. In fact in Norooz tradition practiced prior to Islam, the so called haaji Firooz was women of the town or village called "Bibi Norooz", "Nanna Nowrouz" or "Mother Norooz" who were the early announcers of coming of Norooz but with the coming of Ommaties the men replaced the women . Women in that era would wear colorfull cosmetics & bright customs dancing & singing in the streets and blaring out the coming of Norooz . As for the black face it has nothing to do with the custom  and have heard different non factual reasonngs behind it and is practiced mainly in some parts of Iran & not all . So letting it go is no biggie. & while we are at it lets stop calling him "Haji" Firooz and call him "Baba Pirooz" or "Amu Norooz" and while u r at it its not "saaleh Noe mobaarak" but "Norooze ............".

Cheers!!!

Actually it is about time

You're right and it is great idea. The Black Haji Firooz needs to retire. I remember some years back an Iranian TV personality in LA got badly beaten up and suffered permanent injuries becuase he had dressed up as a Haji Firooz with a painted black face which was misunderstood as a racial insult!

And green is itself a much more relevant color to Spring besides being a great way to support the Greens.

While we're at it we can re-name and re-package Negro-kiss too! Remember that anyone? It is still around too. Super Jordan in LA carries it sometimes although I'm not sure it it has the old packaging.

I love it.  I think Persians are going to adopt to it.

I don't know...

I kinda don't want to ruin Noruz with politics, not that I don't support the green movement but I'd like to keep Noruz the way it is.

Also I'd be very interested to know what Black Iranians think of the whole Amu Noruz thing..

Green Amoo Norooz

by Jahanshah Javid on

Getting rid of our demeaning black-face Amoo Norooz has been long overdue. Painting his face green instead of black not only reflects the message of spring, but also the green movement. Great idea Abarmard! Thanks.
