Iran launches Omid (Hope) satellite carried by Safir-2 rocket

BBC: Iran says it has launched its first domestically made satellite into orbit. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the launch had been successful and that with it Iran had "officially achieved a presence in space". The satellite, carried on a Safir-2 rocket, was meant for telecommunication and research purposes, state TV said. A US state department official said the launch was of "great concern" and could lead to ballistic missile development. Iran insists its intent is peaceful>>>

Imagine if the Medieval IRI

by Alas (not verified) on

Imagine if the Medieval IRI was not running the country.

All of the Iranian-American scientists who are contributing to America such Reza Lotfi, the father of Fuzzy logic and artificial intelligence, the likes of Omidyar, or the head of Mars Lander project in NASA's Jet propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena could have lived in their own country and contributed to their own land.

Alas, the IRI has held the future of Iran captive and only Basiji, their subsidized constituents, view this as a progress due to some Islamic intervention by a 1000-year old man in some well.

It's lamentable that it has come to this. Oh, the opportunity costs of this doomed revolution is incalculable.

They can and they are. Check out the news. google it.

The difference now compared to before is that now they do the entire
project in house. And we can't dispute the fact that Iranians have not
learn the efficiency rule, similar to the Italians or Greeks.

By the end of 2012 Iran will export gas.

martians did it! (to truthteller)

by Anonym7 (not verified) on

"truthteller" says: "I think Russia has helped them .."

"truthteller", since Russians don't have a habit of finishing a job (e.g., Bushehr plant) it is highly unlikely that Russians helped! It is also highly unlikely that Americans helped, because they would have made a unit blunder (metric versus English, see //www.space.com/missionlaunches/launches/orbi... ) or sabotaged the project!
.... since you are sure that Iranians didn't do it, we are left with the martians.
BTW, "truthteller", Iran was definitely brain drained when you and I left the country!

Our vision of Iran as an advanced scientific nation, now has a material manifestation. The IRI certainly will try to spin it as its own accomplishment, and the task is not to let them. If we truly feel we own this prize and not the IRI, then we would fight to claim it, not question its value.

...Mark Fitzpatrick, a specialist on the Iranian nuclear programme at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said: "It's almost as if the Iranians are in league with ballistic missile defence adherents in the United States."

From a purely technical point of view, the advances represented by the satellite launch are incremental. The ballistic technology is basically the same as Iran's Shahab-3 missile, which was tested to great fanfare last year. That technology demonstrated Iran could reach Tel Aviv, Cairo or Riyadh with its missiles.

"The Iranians have shown a very rudimentary capability in a technology that requires far greater sophistication," Christopher Pang, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute, said

by truthteller (not verified) on

If they can build a satellite, why can't they refine their own oil or build the engines for the Khodor instead of buying it from France?? Why can't they develop their own gas fields and they need China and India? If they are so advanced now, why they haven't been able to diversify the economy? It just doesn't make sense. These are not nascent technology but cut and paste ones. In fact, this kind of false advertisment will play in the hands of hawks and neocons in the US. People wake up. I do wish that IRan was really on the road to become a genuinely technolgogically advanced society, but things just don't add up.

Common sense will tell you if IRI was so advanced in technology, they wouldn't need to be so paranoid of their own people or there would not have been such a brain drain or unemployment and bikar. It just doesn't make sense...

I think Russia has helped them in launching this satellite for it's own devious purposes, using Iranians as a tool to posture against the US defense sheild in Poland.

to DK!!!

by Benyamin (not verified) on

I am surprised at you!
I am surprised in so many levels, but since you have been busy name calling and suddenly taking a turn and making this whole thing personal? I have no choice but be responsive. I didnot terror you character in any way. I was trying to make a point as respectful as I can be. I dislike to make a comment in here because what you get in return in most cases is usualy an accusation or terror of character one way or another!
The replies are usualy accusational and as if they know each other for years and cross the personal bounderies?
As for Gogoosh I only respect her as a prominent artist and my respect ends there.
I am allowed to hold my opinion on that I hope.
As I have said I have read your comments but that doesn`t mean YOU are RIGHT all the time if that is how you think then you are yourself just another dictator.
Benyamin Natanyahou, or people like him are dangerous people and we all should have our eyes on them. And I didn`t say that to satisfy your EGO Mr. DK. I said that because I belive in what I said.
I hope it comes the day that spirit of debate can flourish in Iranian culture so we can have meaningful dialogue amongst ourselves and others. and not calling names and cut each other off or be out right disrespectful.
Let`s agree to disagree and yet after a hot debate go out and play a round of golf if not there is always that old persian CHAI that we all enjoy.......lol....be nice and respectful to eachother it only represent your mannors and culture and how you have been brought up that is all.

Banned only under this regime

by mahmoudg on

No one claims that Iranians/Persians should not enjoy scientific achievements, both in space and in nuclear energy.  What is central to all discussions is/are that Iranians cannot be allowed to have them under this regime.  If the Persians decide to throw them out, or the freedom fighting forces of America decide to rid Iran of these parasites, would be the determinant fasctor, weather we are responsible enough as a free and democratic society to own and use these technolgies.

So based on some your logics

by Abarmard on

China is developing technology to defuse the real problems that they have. Don't you think there are less expensive methods to do so than a sophisticated space program?

Some events are mutually exclusive and should be treated that way. It's really not that difficult to realize that.

'Brazil sent man to the moon'

This is not true story but just suppose you woke up one day and you heard the news. How would you feel and how would you react.
I am sure you would say great , wonderful great for brazilians. You would perhaps not even ask who was running the country, a dictator, or a form of democracy.
So be calm, and fair. Do not hate others who have done more for their country than you or your father did.

by Anonymous Observer on

You are correct in your last comment.  The IRI knows this fact very well, and uses it quite effectively to infuse and confuse nationalism for regime support.  It's actually a very potent political tool.  Gorege W. Bush used it for 8 years as well.

Being patriotic for right reasons!

by choghok on

What kind of hope does a rocket gives you and me? I have always known that we Iranians are capable of this and much more. A rocket at hands of Ahmaghinejad gives me shivers insead of hope.

I do think that patriotic feeling like this is only a support for IRI and nothing else. They use it just like the nuclear program to further isolate Iran.

If you look at the comments there are some people who cheer this development as a major acheivement. I have met people myself who would say that since they have made these acheivements then they must be good or at least better than other options. These are people outside of Iran and in an open democracy with access to different news sources. Just think how Iranians in Iran feel. Yes these patriotic feelings and feeling of pride is nothing more than a pat on the back of IRI.

People are so blinded and proud by these toys that they have lost their logic.

Dear Ari

by Abarmard on

The technology is very similar, since the missile can be send to the orbit then directed to a desired spot. It's a matter of time to be able to carry the bomb instead of the satellite to the orbit and back to the earth!

Yet this seems to be the excuse. Every technology can be used for a military purpose. based on that logic, we should sit idle and do nothing.

Ari Siletz

Abarmard, technical question

by Ari Siletz on

Why is France saying this technology is "very close" to Ballistic missile technology?  It seems putting an object in full orbit is not just "close" but beyond what it takes to accomplish the  suborbital trajectories of ballistic missiles. Is it a matter of accuracy, payload...?

Progress and advancement of

by Gt (not verified) on

Progress and advancement of science for any third world or developing country should be welcome by all good men and women. Without progress a country will always have to import technology at high cost. so the people of the country will eventually benefit from this.
So, I understand why most of you are joyful and delighted. On the other hand I do not see why Mr. D Kavidar feeling the same as he is upset and beating the same drums that others did when French gov. was helping saddam to kill iranians 1980-1988. where was mr D kavidar at that time?
In my opinion anyone who helped saddam during 1980s is condemned and has no credibility , be it the Germans or the French and they have no right anymore to comment or make moral judgement.
So Mr. Kavidar by these negative comments and mixing the issues has failed and has shown his true self.
I had his a better face from his previous posts.
My recommendation to all of those true persians is to not engage in discussions with him and let him talk to himslef.
Technology is for the people and not governments.
Just imagine if computer company CEO had decided to delay his new product annoucements till a democrat would win. The french do have some rednecks and it seems that mr. kavidar has joined their ranks.
Just imagine if iran one day makes better cars than France, then Pegeot market will be gone.
Space technology is usually good even for advancement of ground transportation indutries and creates jobs.
If you talk to CEOs of big successful companies i think they would say geat let's have more people appreciate science, but mr kavidar because of his love/hate for mullas thinks all the issues should be mixed.
eEven if he chancges, i would say ignore him from now on, then he will move on with his life where he can find a nicer job.

The level of sophistication to send a satellite in to the orbit is very well known for those of us who are in the field of science and technology.

This puzzle has not been solved for other nations except 8!

This is an amazing discovery and there is only upward from here. Thanks to all those who worked hard with the confidence and "We Can Do it" attitude-> and did it.

Iranian patriotism has been flourishing by advancements in science and technology that is home made. All these will help the formation of a civil society, where the people are respectful to the laws of the land and the laws of the land therefore is responsive to the social changes.

by andishe on

and not condemn progress just because we are against the regime. The opposition during the shah criticized everything he did, even the good things. Now among the diaspora and the opposition everything which is progress from nuclear Iran to satelllite to space program is neglected or criticized because people think it makes the regime stronger. Well the economy and progress didnt make the shah more secure. im glad of any progress regardless of the regime be it a monarch or a mullah thats ruling. progress and opposition are two different things. I am impressed and surprised who mullahs regime is making such progress. Who would have thought that an akhound sitting on a carpet could manage this? But again maybe Irans power is more complex and organic and hence its the people who regardless of a regime are developing the country.    The good news is that this is the worst possible regime and they are making this kind of develoopment. Imagine who it would have been if there was a nationalist government that was not under sanctions. Israel would be much more in danger being close to a regional superpower like Iran.

and although it is true what u have stated about IRAN, but I also commented that you need to take your battle and move forward in fighting the IR. We cannot reject these accomplishments ARE INFACT ACCOMPLISHMENTS and the fight against the INJUSTICE in Iran shall go on as it is by brave people that are doing it right at this moment.

as it comes about Kadivar, appologists? because we are supportive of those kids that really did this? I suppose if any of those kids would have happened to be your son/daughter and broke the news to you that: Daddy I sent a satelite to orbit, your first reaction would have been a slap on the face followed by a long french poem which no one can understand and tell them that what they have done is an abomination?

I amnot going to call names on you or go too far here since I truly believe the true spirit of debate is respect and to be able to communicate. Once you start name calling it means you are changing the rules and you lose the debate altogether!

And yes I DO BELIEVE WHAT HAS HAPPENED IS BIG AND SHOULD BE CELEBRATED!!!
