The Shah insists on the importance of finding an adequate training for the working classby creating more technical schools at home instead of sending them abroad and complains about exaggerated religious zeal as a pretext not to work.

STOP PRAYING ALL DAY

ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES

During a speech ( exact date, location ? ) at a public gathering of workers, University teachers and industry entrepreneurs, the Shah of Iran deplores the shortcomings in terms of qualified executives and insists on the importance of developing the nation's technical schools instead of sending workers abroad (to Federal Germany) for further training only to come back boasting about their qualifications only to sit behind a desk. He then criticizes those male traditionalists who refuse to work on days of religious mournings (aka"Azah Dary") while their wives and or daughters (who normally work half the amount of time in the same companies) as a result often have to double their efforts in order to compensate for the delays.

Rough Translation:

"We know better than anyone the shortcomings of our generation. We lack sufficiently qualified personals and executives in various technical branches of the industry. We also lack sufficient technical schools to train them in. In addition unfortunately each time a new technical school is created, the teachers are immediately tempted to over estimate the value of the diplomas delivered to the students in the eye of the university establishment. Hence an inadequacy between the training required and the diploma delivered." say's the Shah.

"The result is that each time someone get's a diploma he thinks that entitles him or her not to work and seek an easy way out. That is Not good." He Continues.

"On days of religious mournings, given the facilities in a city like this one (exact location ? ), you stop working while your own wives and daughters have to finish the job. That is not the genuine message of Islam, Our White Revolution is precisely trying to translate in practice that original message of the prophet. But there are people who are distorting that genuine message with an explicit aim to pervert it and manipulate you through superstition." say's he.

Applause

ABBAS MILANI’s TAKE

******************************

******************************

Abbas Milani's Take:

Historian Abbas Milani who authored a recent biography on the Shah say's the last Iranian Monarch (as opposed to his father's staunch secularist stance) instead encouraged religious practice in his kingdom by increasing the number of mosques in the country as never before.

Hence creating an educated elite and the working class which remained at large traditionalist in their mindsets and contributed to marginalizing the farmore secular bourgeoisie who could have taken the reigns of power at the advent of the revolution.

Iranian people are very lazy (Excuse me with an exception of Ghajar dynasty, as  we all know how their hard work of banging thousends of women in their haram sara really helped our country porgress economically, socially, industrialy, you name it!). Unfortunatley having oil and gas has made the matter much worse by creating  a culture of self entitlement which created IRR.

During the shah's reign the most number of mosques in Iran's history was built. In practice he flirted a lot with the fundamentalists, if SAVAK would go after them as they did go after the reds then we would not have any fundamentalists in power today. Also the reds would have been gone at the end of the 80's during the collapse of the sovjet union... The shah basically chose the wrong enemy. He didn't think that islamists would be as scary as the reds. It was also hard for anyone during that period to think in modern terms, the biggest threat back then was the communists.

Ultimately the biggest political losers were the reds. Not only did they indirectly help the success of the fundamentalists, but also ensuring their future destruction. The communists are the reason why we have e.g. the taliban in afghanistan or why we have the IR. I know e.g. many ex. Tudeh people regretting what they have done in the past. Now they live as democracts in the west while the new generation suffers in Iran...

look at what shah did, in favor of secular ideals for example for women and the work force!

Mash Ghasem Jan how is your comment relevant to the blog ?

by Darius Kadivar on

Let's assume what you claim is correct.

After all the Shah and his regime's so called authoritarian nature (which have been discussed at length over the years) are not at all the central issue in this blog but rather the assessment by some academics such as Abbas Milani that the Shah's religious nature discouraged secularism to take root in Iran and hence led the majority of Iranians to rely on a religious revolution instead of a secular one.

The Shah's above speech suggests quite the contrary.

If Not then I don't see how different was the Shah's attempt to conciliate modernity with Islam from what followers of your very own Green Movement which you seem to also support ( along with your favorite historian Hamid Dabashi) are aspiring to ?

So why the devil did they do the Revolution in the first place if it is to reach the same conclusion 32 years late ?:

FIRST REFORMIST: Shah aims to break mullahs grip on country

For the major critic that Milani and other Jomhurykhah's are making against the Shah's regime is not merely centered on what they deem as an incompatibility between the Monarchy and Democracy but rather the incompatibility between the Monarchy and Modernity.

Needless to say I disagree with Milani on both accounts.

So could you please be kind enough to explain to us how your comments are relevant or pertinent to the central issue bought up in this blog (which is the Shah's deemed Religiosity and Not his authoritarian rule) ? ...

Thank you,

DK

amirparvizforsecularmonarchy

Shah meant leave the country when discussing extremists.

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

In the case of Mullahs like Khomeini on one side, he would say the govt should pay for 1 way tickets to get rid of extremist leaders and exile them.

Then there were the commies that wanted to kill all wealthy people, so he was happy to send them to new lives in russia.

Shahs nature was non violent and peace loving hence white (peace) revolution.

In most experts view extremists which were guilty of killing and terrorizing had no place in politics, then a one party system would be an intelligent start for an autocratic government, that would evolve with time based on experience to multi-party system.  Iranians in the past 30 years had just gone from 1% to 90% literacy and started having high paying work as a first generation so political development had to reflect where people were at in reality.  Low judgement, experience, responsibility, institutions not yet evolved to protect iranians from foreign interference in elections etc.

Join my Rastakhiz Party or leave

by Ali P. on

I have looked much for the context of this statement by the Shah, to no avail. I am not sure what the exact words were (Does anyone?), but here is one explanation, I read somewhere:

It was the height of the Cold War. The single party system reminded everyone of the countries of Eastern Europe, behind the iron curtain, where only one party existed, and those who did not like it, had no choice, and no voice. Many were imprisoned. They were not even allowed to leave the country.

The Shah was asked about his idea of one-party system, and what opponants could do. He replied:" They could get their passport and leave", implying that unlike those Russian or Polish or Hungarian dissidents, Iranian dissidents were free to leave, if they wanted.

That, is not the same as "join my party or leave" or deporting dissidents, that to my knowledge, never happened (millions of Iranians were not party members and were not bothered), but it gave the opponents of the Shah the ammunition they needed for propaganda against him.

God knows.

Yours,

Ali P.
