Hello Iranian.com boosters!

After roughly 6 months of work, I am excited to announce that the new Iranian.com is ready!

Here is what you can expect:

- Easy content production. From videos, audio files, text blogs, news links, we have streamlined how content gets created and shared.

- Moderation of comments. You will now be in charge of moderating comments made by others on your content. Any deleted comment by the content creator will automatically be replaced with short verbiage that explains that the author has decided to remove the comment.

- Internal public messaging system. Any @ sign followed by a username will create a link to that member's profile and will notify that member that he or she has been mentioned by you.

- Ranking of content. Alas, IDC will no longer have an Editor. Rather, the system will rank content based on an algorithm which factors variables like Toops (ie "Likes"), comments and views. The algorithm is a work in progress, so please be patient as it evolves and matures.

- Signal to noise. You will have the ability to toggle between viewing content posted by all members vs only viewing content by those you choose to follow.

- Social media integration. In addition to supporting Facebook Connect and Twitter for new member registrations, you will have the option to automatically push your content to the aforementioned social media sites.

- Unique url's. Each user can create a simple, easy to remember url. For example, mine will be Iranian.com/SaidAmin.

Instructions for getting on the new site...

1) Please go to //iranian.com/ and click "Sign In" (top of the page). Login with your current Iranian.com registered email address and password. Note, if you are a member who has registered to Iranian.com within the last 30 days, you will need to create a new profile.

2) Once you have entered your email address/password, click the "Click here to resend confirmation link".

3) A confirmation email/link will be sent to your email address. Please click the received link to verify your account to complete the registration process.

4) Login with your email address and password.

Important announcement:

As of Wednesday night, the new IDC will be live on the domain Iranian.com. Any content that you create on the url above will be available when we redirect to the Iranian.com domain. At around the same time, we will begin archiving all "old" content created since 2008. Please note that while archiving, your content will not be visible on the web. This "blackout" period should last around 4 days.

There's also lots of cool upgrades in the works, but for now, please join me on the new Iranian.com.

Onward & Upward!

Thanks Alborz. I appreciate the well though out and candid comments. Wonderful food for thought.

Thank you Said

by alborz on

I appreciate the explanation and I will be there on the new site.

The reason for my comment was to simply make a point that the new site is not simply the old site with new features or enhancement, but that it is entirely new eco-system.

For example had the old site's layout and content presentation been preserved, then the new features would have been enhancement. However the features of the new site are in fact what defines it - therefore the reason to visit it requires a different motivation.

I don't follow folks on the old site, I simply follow subjects that grab my attention and I believe that I will have to hunt for them on the new site, by scrolling through a lot of stuff, whereas the old site did not require this.  For example, the old site had this very effective line up of videos and in one shot, I could choose which to watch and which to skip.   Same on content, as a regular visitor, I could see the new stuff appear before me on the blog, articles, and news - without regard to who wrote it.

In short, there were a lot of good features and time will tell how the old geasers like me who have been on IC for years, will take a liking to the new format.   As a result who many will call IC as their new home and how many will become "homeless".

Finally, it seems that the new site's organization is similar to JJ's new site - perhaps very different behind the layout, but strangely similar in apperance.

Best wishes,

Alborz

Can I recommend a username for you to be used on the new site?

Anonymous Observer

I have to agree with Alborz

by Anonymous Observer on

While I wish and hope the best for IC, the new site appears more as a social / blogging site than a news journal site.  While the current version of IC also relies on contributor content as opposed to "real" (for lack of a better word) journalists, I believe that it owes its success, in a large part, to the fact site's design gives the appearance of a "news" type site. The new design looks a lot like a specialty blog or a social site.  So, while I wish it continued success, I am concerned that to someone who is not a regular contributor, it may come across as just another social site.

SaidAmin

@alborz you have the option

by SaidAmin on

@alborz you have the option to follow whomever you please. as a result, you can cut out the "noise" and opt to view only the content of the folks that you find interesting.

user TOOPS and activity, like views/comments dictates the ranking of content. so in essence, IDC members are each mini editors, with their collective voice shaping the ranking of all the content.

as for facebook, i don't use it. my interest is in allowing Iranians to express themselves, and to discover interesting information. the term "social networking" simply means to me that we are humans open to some form and level of interaction. thus, fair to say that life is a series of experiences whereby we share, absorb and feed of each other's energy. but hey, that's just my take on it.

hope to see you online.

@mohsen it's a clean slate.

by SaidAmin on

@mohsen it's a clean slate. live and let live, but authors can decide for themseleves what is appropriate or not on their content.

just saw your latest comment. yes mohsen, users can remove comments as they see fit. if i have misunderstood your question, i kindly ask that you ask it again USING sign language ;)

Thank you for your hard works for the new site, and congratulations.

The old site will be missed by me!

by alborz on

Mr. Amin,

While the change to a new platform is inevitable now, I have to say that the old site, offered so much visibility to an array of topics in one glance.  As always, the value of what one has is realized when it is replaced.

The new one looks like Facebook and frankly I don't visit your site for social networking - but because it contains everything that is related to Iran without the masses deciding for me whether it should or should not rise to the top.  The old site was truly a repository from which one could find things by simple inspection.

On the new site, I found myself scrolling endlessly and pointlessly - having to see things sequentially - quite inefficient and tiresome.   Is social networkign what your users asked for, or is this what you had to do to remain viable?

The old site will be sorely missed by me.

Alborz

Shazde Asdola Mirza

Let's thank Mr. Amin and send appreciations to Mr. Javid

by Shazde Asdola Mirza on

Thanks Mr. Amin, for a very nice start of the new Iranian dot Com. I wish you full success with this new endeavour.

As a frequent enjoyer and contributor of the outgoing IC, I also would like to share my appreciation of Mr. Javid's efforts. This site has been one of the most viewed Iranian websites outside Iran, and certainly the most democratic one.

The Iranian dot Com will be recorded in our literary history as perhaps the first democratic website, where almost everyone with a point of view (and some degree of civility) could comment, blog and post articles.

The role of Mr. Javid in creating this site, and the efforts of his co-owners and his Admins (including Foad Khosvand and Nazy Kaviani) have been instrumental in IC's success. JJ's editorial efforts were also key in steering this ship through the very choppy waters of the typical Iranian discourse (i.e. shouting matches).

It is understandable that any editorial input comes with some degree of subjectivity, but JJ's steady hand was proven to be great with maneuvering the lefts and the rights of Iranians' multi-polar character ... while maintaining openness, and above all, fostering the growth of progressive thought.

It has been many good years, and again I wish for many even better years to come for both of you gentlemen, and the other good members of the IC family.

Shirzadegan

Dear Mr. Amin, we love to see our old friends on this site.

by Shirzadegan on

We love to see Anglohpile, Videmose and doctor mohandes on this site. We miss them dearly. Please UNlock them so we enjoy their write ups.

Thanks,

Siavash

Shirzadegan

No Allah on this site please, it is PARVARDEGAR

by Shirzadegan on

We have beautiful word for the creator and we call it Parvardegar or Khoda. Allah is Arabic and here is Iran.com, not ARAB site. So please avoid using Arabic expression on this site. There are so many families still suffering from the death of their loved ones by Arabs.

And good luck to Mr. SaidAmin for his new site.

Payandeh IRAN
