Iran: developing news

This is the fourth blog I have created to keep track of developing news in Iran. Please bring any articles or news items you would like to share with others and post it here. You can also stop by just to read or to discuss the news. These are rapidly changing times in Iran and in the absence of official and accurate news reporting out of the country, Iranians inside have turned to citizen journalism in order to capture contemporary Iranian history in their tweets, blogs, and clips. On the receiving end, we have a job to do, too. We need to read and understand what they are trying to convey. We need to get their voices out to each other and to the world. We are the media. Please do your share to help.

Account Blocking at iranian.com (to Vildemose and JJ)

by marhoum Kharmagas on

My main objective today was not to stop the tabloid journalism. If those who ran Iran are such idiots that they can be toppled by this, then they ought to be toppled!

My main objective in here was to find out who blocked my account, and did it on what basis. Many people with diverse political orientation from very green people to monarchists have questioned JJ on this issue. Unlike some of you many of us don't want to turn JJ into valie faghih of this site. ..... so I am not frustrated at all, I have acheived more than I wanted!

Now, your shoulough bazi may help JJ, but will not resolve his issue. He can only resolve this issue by unblocking people such as very anti IRI Farhad Kashani, to very green Capt_Ayhab and correct his policies in this regard. And as you can see down below I have offered him my account, he can have it!

Clinton: U.S. Not Closing the Door on Talks With Iran

by HollyUSA on

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the Obama administration
is not closing the door on possible negotiations with Iran over its
nuclear program, despite intransigence from Tehran.

Speaking to reporters at the State Department on Monday, Clinton
said it is clear that U.S. efforts in 2009 to engage Iran in nuclear
talks are not fruitful. And she accused Tehran of what she called
"ruthless repression" of protesters. But Clinton added that the U.S.
has not given up hope for a breakthrough.

President Obama had said he would move toward tougher sanctions
against Iran if the Iranians did not show signs of a willingness to
engage in negotiations on their nuclear program by the end of 2009.

Iran 'arrested foreign nationals during Ashura clashes'

by HollyUSA on

"Iran has said several foreign nationals were arrested during anti-government demonstrations last week.

Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi said those detained had been
"pursuing propaganda and psychological warfare". He did not give their
nationalities.

Some 300 of the 500 people arrested remain in
detention after mass protests in Tehran on 27 December during the Shia
Muslim festival of Ashura.

At least eight people were killed in a crackdown on anti-government protests.

"Several
foreigners are among those arrested on the day of Ashura, they were
leading a psychological war against the system," Mr Moslehi told state
television.

"They entered Iran two days before Ashura," he added.

The
late December demonstrations were the country's most violent protests
since those following June's disputed presidential election. The nephew
of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi was among those killed in the
clashes.

No further details about those arrested were available.

According
to a pro-government website, Rajanews, a "British citizen, who was
carrying his passport" was among those arrested, AFP reports.

The news agency also says an Iran-based Syrian journalist working for Dubai TV was also among those detained.

Press
TV also had reported that those arrested also included members of the
banned opposition group Mujahideen Khalq Organisation (MKO) - or the
People's Mujahideen.

The protests, which began after President
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's controversial re-election in June, have grown
into the biggest challenge to the government since the 1979 Islamic
revolution."

Kharmagas frustration stems

by vildemose on

Kharmagas frustration stems from his solidarity with IRI, which he apparently see as a foil to US/Israeli plans in the region. Because he doesn't see the necessity in negating the horrible system that Iranians face, he is  blind to their heroic struggle- instead of seeing human beings seeking freedom, he only sees a threat to a useful system, IRI who is supposedly anti-imperialst. He thinks calling out the criminals that have the blood of Iranians on their hands is aiding the imperialists.

Best remedy is to ignore such ideologues.

Good try, but I don’t think this will work, lads:

FM spokesman denounces harsh attitude of French police
Tehran, Jan 4, IRNA –

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mihman-Parast on Monday denounced the harsh attitude of French police and security forces towards people in that country.

Such an attitude is against human rights norms, he said, adding that behavior of the French police is a clear indication of violation of civil, political, social, economic, and cultural rights of the French people.

Their attitude is also against international commitments of France as a member of international human rights conventions, Mihman-Parast noted.

The recent unrest in various French cities is an indication of the lack of justice and equality throughout this country, he said, adding that such an approach is rooted in incorrect policies of the French statesmen.

Referring to a human tragedy in France in 2009, he regretted that 353 homeless people died last year in a country which is the so-called advocate of equality and democracy in the world.

Mihman-Parast further voiced Tehran’s great concern over the performance of the French government and called for serious change in the attitude of the country’s statesmen.

He also urged the international bodies to investigate such unfair approach in France.

I expect that Ramin Mihman-Parast will be applying for political asylum in France before the end of this year.

Let’s hope he doesn’t get it.

Iran's Regime and Opposition Brace for the Next Round Read more

by Shifteh Ansari on

Faced with escalating turmoil, Iran's newly militarized regime now appears to be turning to the Tiananmen model to ensure its survival. The theocracy has signaled over the past week that it will exercise extraordinary military and judicial powers against opposition leaders, dissidents, street protesters and even sympathizers to end the growing turmoil. The regime's most urgent goal is to prevent opposition activists from turning next month's 11-day celebration marking the Shah's ouster in 1979 into a counterrevolution against his successors.

Disappointing and alarming that the elements of the regime

by Cost-of-Progress on

Try to assert their will - by force - even here.

The few hard-core islamic regime supportes who do not even try to hide their bias are the true traitors and anti-nationalist elements.

Watch for this type of person to be the element of chaos and disorder when we finally get rid of this hated regime in hopes for true democracy. Will they have the balls to wear the "vest" like their beloved arab counterparts in support of their twisted cause?

No JJ

by marhoum Kharmagas on

JJ says: "..Ansari and those who post news about Iran are blodd-sucking traitors"

No JJ, none of my comments against these guys have this extreme rhetoric, ..., as anyone can readily verify. As I said below  Feel free to block my account, and definitely block my account if you were the person who originally blocked my account.

marhoum Kharmagas, ok. Ansari and those who post news about Iran are blodd-sucking traitors who are trying to fool everyone. Continue your brave struggle for truth.

by marhoum Kharmagas on

JJ says: "All those involved including those who post here, are sincere in their effort, and your constant badgering is unconstructive, to say the least."

JJ, we disagree on this. Feel free to block my account, and definitely block my account if you were the person who originally blocked my account.

As I mentioned before, I don't know who did that and why. I said I was happy that you were back. I don't know who are those people who have the blocking power in this site. I thought it was only in  JJ's power. whether this was right or wrong or abusive or not, I can't pronounce myself as I don't have enough information about it.

My last comment was only regarding to Mrs Ansari's offer for friendship which was the subject of your comment to me.

Move on

by Jahanshah Javid on

marhoum Kharmagas, you have clearly and frequently stated your view that you do not approve of these news items being collected here by Ansari and others.

Your continuing objections are not going to change anything. Ansari and others are free to post any item they think is interesting to share with the public.

No one is assuming that whatever that is posted is completely factual. There are bound to be items that are based on rumors and may not be true. However, in the absence of a free press in Iran and the inability to gather news in a safe and secure fashion, people will rely on sources that are not entirely professional. Still, these efforts are extremely important in breaking the existing widespread censorship imposed by the regime.

All those involved including those who post here, are sincere in their effort, and your constant badgering is unconstructive, to say the least.

"green" tabloid journalism (to Souri)

by marhoum Kharmagas on

Souri says: "I don't approve Mrs Ansari's principle of posting news here, but never criticized her. 1) I do believe in freedom of speech and freedom of thinking .... "

Souri,  criticizing one another in any form through serious/non serious conversations has nothing to do with respect for freedom of speech. As I explicitly said below  ....I am glad that these guys can do this but I should also be able to ridicule this kind of tabloid journalism without loosing my account.

.... and BTW, by no means I disagree with posting news here....

Souri

Dear Kharmagas

by Souri on

Thanks for taking time and writing me about your opinion.

We may differ on some views, one of them is this virtual friendship.

Contrary to you, I believe that yes, we can become friends even though we have opposite opinions. Like yourself, I don't approve Mrs Ansari's principle of posting news here, but never criticized her. Why? Because:

1) I do believe in freedom of speech and freedom of thinking

2) They are lots of people around who are interested to read those news and as you might have noticed there were more than 4 thousands read on her first blog.

3) I believe the best approach to criticize an action or a principle is not mocking them, but affronting it in a more direct way. I believe this will sound more respectful. Although I know this is your style to joke and I love your humor, but making jokes too often without saying a word of serious talk, come across as an offense to that person.

Last but not the least, I always said I like you and your style and want to keep your friendship. Hope you are not mad at me, for having encouraged you to accept Mrs Ansari's request.

Respectfully,

marhoum Kharmagas

"green" tabloid journalism (to Souri)

by marhoum Kharmagas on

Sorry to disappoint you, but I am not here to "give friendship a try" with an individual or a crowd that I consider tabloid journalist/s. Unlike these guys I am not a full timer (as you can judge by the number of my daily comments), but I criticize/ridicule them as much as I can because I believe what they are doing is wrong.... terribly wrong.

During the Ashura/Tassua days one of these guys posted a Youtube from Tehran that only showed fire. It was so negative that another one of them quickly removed it (*). I am glad that these guys can do this but I should also be able to ridicule this kind of tabloid journalism without loosing my account.

I wonder if these guys do more damage than good to the cause that is followed by good greens such as Dr. Sahimi!

(*) BTW, there are many more examples of that

Iran's desperate regime

by Shifteh Ansari on

With stronger foreign sanctions widely expected in 2010, the regime desperately needs the united support of its people. But the crackdown, brutal as it is, has failed to quell the opposition, and government officials are fighting among themselves about what to do next. Their failures have made even their staunchest foreign allies (Russia and China) nervous about the regime's long-term prospects - and maybe, just maybe, less likely to oppose the sanctions that soon will be proposed at the U.N. Security Council.
