Gaza Attack News and Open Thread
by Q
01-Jun-2010

Since the usual mob of so-called Persian "patriots" is clearly uncomfortable talking about Israeli war crimes (or anything other than their own agenda), I propose we have an open thread where the latest from the Gaza crisis can be discussed.

First, let me say, that those people who constantly moan about "I don't care about X, this is IRANIAN.COM, not X.COM", are clearly wrong. Many of them are disingenuous. This has been proven several times. Most recently it was proven again when I put up news stories of Iranians getting killed in Iraq, and the inhuman and hostile reaction some of these "patriots" exhibited was telling.

A smaller group is clearly just protecting Israel against criticism. We have all met these people, some of them right-of-center thinkers who admire Israel's modernity, power and authority and don't care about much else. Some of them are Iranian Jews who have found a sense of pride and belonging in the dominant Israeli narrative in the West, and this is their way of protecting that feeling. Some are brought up to equate Islam with Arabs and evil and since Israel is "against" Arabs, they think Israel must be a friend, so they are just protecting friends from "enemies" by trying to silence criticism of Israel.

One way this hypocrisy becomes obvious is with their own conduct. They claim they support freedom of speech and also that we should not waste energy on Palestine when there are human rights violations in Iran. Both are valid points of view. But why would a person who has these views waste time actually criticizing others who do write about Palestine? Does that sound like someone who wants to just concern themselves with Iranian human rights? Why would someone like that care, for example, that Iran has requested Intropol investigations of Israeli officials?

Not everyone is a hypocrite of course, far from it, even here. Some people genuinely just think the Palestinian issue has nothing to do with us, and they do not want to lose focus on Iran. While I can respect their honesty, I think they are misguided. The world is incredibly interconnected. Crisis in the Middle East as well as anything having to do with Israel, Turkey, US is very relevant to Iran, relevant to the future of our country, and to the future of the people in it, including those who are seeking democratic changes.

However, I didn't really mean to get off on a rant here. I did not make this blog to talk about why the Gaza massacre is relevant to us, I will write an article about that part soon. Here, I just want to give a central location to those who do care about what is going on to comment, share links and ideas. I humbly ask those who do not care to stay out of this as to not cause themselves any unnecessary headaches.

The Picture is of the Nobel Elders Group, founded by Nelson Mandela and comprised of Nobel Peace prize winners who are active in human rights issues. It just released the statement on the Gaza crisis, which in part reads:

“The Elders have condemned the reported killing by Israeli forces of more than a dozen people who were attempting to deliver relief supplies to the Gaza Strip by sea,” the 12—member group said in a statement issued in Johannesburg, where it met over the weekend.

The group, which was launched by Mr. Mandela on his birthday in 2007 to try to solve some of the world’s most intractable conflicts, called for a “full investigation” of the incident and urged the UN Security Council “to debate the situation with a view to mandating action to end the closure of the Gaza Strip.” “This tragic incident should draw the world’s attention to the terrible suffering of Gaza’s 1.5 million people, half of whom are children under the age of 18,” the group said.

This comes in the wake of the UN Security Council action after a 12 hour emergency meeting. It was predictably watered down by Israel's main supporter, the United States. But it was passed anyway. See: UN Security Council Condemns Israel for Violence in Gaza Raid, Seeks Probe.

Lastly, I want to leave you with this short interview by Dr. Norman Finkelstein, himself an American Jew and son of two holocaust survivors who has dedicated his life to battling the inhuman Israeli policies and their corrupt cheerleaders in American media and society. Here he talks about why Israeli is officially a "Lunatic State":

So please share your feelings and links.

Talk about hypocrisy

by Fair on

I strongly condemn all violence against innocent civilians, whether it is by Israel against Gazans, or IRI and Khomeini against students who ask for their basic rights.

Now let us see how much the author of this blog  and others who post dozens of articles about how unacceptable the killing of 9 people on this flotilla complain about the murder by Khomeini of thousands of Iranians without trial in a couple of days.  Or how "offended" they were by the murder and rape and execution without trial of hundreds of innocent Iranians in the last year by this regime.

Let us see how much outrage they show when in one day 5 Kurds are executed without trial or any due process whatsoever.

Or when Jafar Panahi or Simin Behbabahani are imprisoned.  Or when Neda Agha Soltan is murdered in front of the whole world.  Or when the supreme Islamic Fuehrer declares war against the Iranian people.

And let us see how many inhabitants of Gaza or South Lebanon have shown support for pro democracy activists in Iran.

The silence is deafening, and the hypocrisy of these people reeks.

Today: Thousands on the streets of Europe against Israel

by Mola Nasredeen on

Angry protestors chanting anti-Israeli slogans and waving Palestinian and Turkish flags took to the streets of Istanbul, London, Dublin and Paris as well as a string of other French cities, following Monday's deadly assault.

Demonstrators branded Israel a "murderer", demanded that it lift its blockade and vowed that the deaths of the nine activists would not be in vain.

In Turkey a crowd of around 10,000 gathered at the Caglayan square on the European side of the city straddling the Bosphorus Strait. "Murderer Israel!," chanted the demonstrators, at times breaking into shouts of "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is great" in English.

"The longer we keep silent, the bigger the massacre grows," read a banner in French while the demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and shouted anti-Israeli slogans.

Many of them wore headbands that read "Murderers Israel, keep your hands off the boats!" in Hebrew and English. The dead activists were all Turkish including one who also had US nationality.

In Dublin, organisers of the Irish march said up to several thousand people had taken part.

"I think people are incredibly angry that nine peace activists were murdered in an attempt to intimidate people coming to Gaza," said Richard Boyd Barrett, chairman of the Irish Anti-War Movement who was on the march.

In France, over 20,000 people, including 5,000 in Paris, vented their anger at Israel's handling of the aid flotilla, police said. Read more:

Exerpt:
Israel claims, and film confirms, that its commandos rappelling down onto the Turkish ship were attacked with sticks and metal rods. One was tossed off a deck, another tossed overboard into a lifeboat.
But that 2 a.m. boarding of an unarmed ship with an unarmed crew, carrying no munitions or weapons, 65 miles at sea, was an act of piracy. What the Israeli commandos got is what any armed hijacker should expect who tries to steal a car from a driver who keeps a tire iron under the front seat.
And the response of these highly trained naval commandos to the resistance they encountered? They shot and killed nine passengers, and wounded many more.

 //buchanan.org/blog/the-mediterranean-massacre-4148
excerpt:

If the only way we can make the Israelis feel “secure” is by allowing them to engage in international piracy on the high seas, then perhaps this is the sort of high-maintenance relationship we can no longer afford. When Israelis are allowed to kill and kidnap Americans, without having to endure even a mild rebuke, one has to wonder what, exactly, is going on in Washington, D.C. Yes, the Israel lobby is one of the most powerful, but surely there’s someone in those circles willing to stand up for America and American interests – isn’t there?

NZ protesters throw shoes over Gaza

by Q on

Hundreds of anti-Israel protesters hurled old shoes at the US consulate in Auckland on Saturday in an "expression of outrage and anger" over clashes between Israeli armed forces and Gaza-bound aid workers.

The demonstration, organised by Global Peace and Justice Auckland, called for sanctions against the Israeli government after nine humanitarian aid workers were killed when Israeli commandos stormed a flotilla of boats travelling to Gaza with aid on Monday, protest organiser Mike Treen said.

Protests also took place in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Gaza-bound aid ship defies orders to put to Israel port

by Q on

JERUSALEM : Gaza-bound aid ship Rachel Corrie ignored Israeli orders to put to port in the southern coastal city of Ashdod Saturday and steamed on towards Gaza in defiance of the warships which had intercepted it, the military said.

"We indicated several times to the organisers aboard the ship that they should head to the port of Ashdod as there is a blockade in force on the Gaza Strip, but they ignored our appeals and are continuing to head towards Gaza," a military spokeswoman said.

Earlier a spokesman for the Gaza-based welcoming committee told AFP: "The Rachel Corrie has been intercepted 35 miles off Gaza.

"Several Israeli boats surrounded them between 30 and 35 miles off Gaza and prevented them from reaching Gaza," Amjad al-Shawa said after speaking by telephone with passengers on the boat.

He said that communication with the vessel had since been "completely cut".

A great and insight ful article here about the nature of embargo

by Bavafa on

"I know that terrorists can be fiendishly clever, but there is no real evidence, only unconfirmed rumors among the intel community, that Hamas actually has the Coriander Bomb. Most experts put them at least 5-8 years away from developing that sort of destructive technology "

"In reality, the embargo has a broader and more sinister purpose: to impoverish the people of Gaza, and thus turn them against Hamas. As the Israeli newspaper Haaretz has reported, the Israeli officials in charge of the embargo adhere to what they call a policy of "no prosperity, no development, no humanitarian crisis." In other words, the embargo must be tight enough to keep the people of Gaza miserable, but not so tight that they starve."

Q

Robert Fisk: The truth behind the Israeli propaganda

by Q on

But whoops! At least the Israelis have not demanded ransom. They just want to get journalists to win the propaganda war for them. Scarcely had the week begun when Israel's warrior "commandos" stormed a Turkish boat bringing aid to Gaza and shot nine of the passengers dead. Yet by week's end, the protesters had become "armed peace activists", vicious anti-Semites "professing pacifism, seething with hate, pounding away at another human being with a metal pole". I liked the last bit. The fact that the person being beaten was apparently shooting another human being with a rifle didn't quite get into this weird version of reality.
