Four more years but there's no going back
by IRANdokht
13-Jun-2009

It's clear that for most of us who rely on video clips from Iran, blogs and foreign TV reports believed that the majority was with the green voters: they're more outspoken, more visible (especially on the electronic media) and they represent the more liberal views that we also share. We rarely ever hear from the rural areas, we do not hear from the Iranians who are not online, who do not participate in blogs and TV interviews. One 10 mile trip from the south of Tehran to the northern part demonstrates the immense cultural gap in Iran's society. It shouldn't come as a surprise to see this silent majority win the election for their candidate, as disappointing as it is for most of us abroad. Could it be that the corruption and the "agha zadeh" thieveries frustrate the Iranian people the most? Could it be that slamming Rafsanjani's son sounded more pleasant to most Iranians than criticizing Ahmadinejad's Holocaust denial? I don't know, I don't have the numbers and I sure don't know all the facts.

Of course the millions of green voters represent a huge crowd who can fill the streets and assemble in impressive numbers. This level of uprising was not seen for decades in Iran.
These struggles that you see on the streets today are between the voters and the ruling government.

That's why the boycotters are irrelevant. If people had agreed with them and boycotted the election by staying home, they would have had no leg to stand on today. The anti Ahmadinejad voters are demanding to be counted, and due to their high numbers they represent a powerful force. Where does that leave the ones who didn't vote? out in the cold!  The ironic part is that this group is now boasting, ridiculing the voters and encouraging the demonstrations which is yet another cowardice stance from the ones who sit at home and cry lengesh kon.

I am also disappointed by the results and I have seen reports that try to scientifically prove fraud: //tehranbureau.com/2009/06/13/faulty-election... also many political figures, and groups inside Iran, even "rohanioon mobarez" have rejected the results of the election.

Nevertheless, the election was a victory for Iranian people because it's process opened discussions and put forth a brand new wave in Iran's political scene. I have no doubt the results were tweaked in favor of the hardliners, but at the most, I would believe a closer set of numbers that would have led to another round.

These are exciting times in our country. People are energized, open and more active in the scene. Iranian century long struggle for democracy and freedom is taking its course and moving forward, bending and defeating the obstacles and social barriers put forth by the ruling regimes. The generation of Iranians who are demonstrating today were mostly born in the last three decades, proving that even with strict Islamic laws and Islamic education, Iran's fight for freedom cannot be stopped. Nothing will be the same going forward, they might silence this crowd temporarily, but they cannot stop them. I just wish someone qualified was leading these struggles to help the Iranians who cry for freedom and oppose the corruption as well as human rights violations. Unfortunately we have an opposition that keeps missing the boat.

At this point, the question is how these next four years would be different from the last four. Will the ruling hardliners soften up with the knowledge of the growing moderates and fear of being removed from power? will they come down hard on people and take up an even more radical foreign policy?

No matter what, the change is here.

Kaveh Nouraee

Once an apologist, always an apologist

by Kaveh Nouraee on

"Four more years, but there's no going back."

So, that's notification to the IR that they have only 48 months to finish destroying Iran and then they must go? Don't be so nice about it. Make sure they get the message. Tell them you insist!

This entire process has been rigged from the outset, and yet you wish to present it as though it is a legitimate electoral process.

That makes you an apologist.

Boycotters are irrelevant? No, the boycotters, such as myself, know that regardless of who "wins", the Iranian people lose. The monkey was on the verge of having his ass handed to him in this so-called "election", which anybody could see as marking a huge turning point in Iran's future. The proverbial genie was about to be let out of the bottle. Even though there's never been a realistic chance of the IR lightening up", they gauged public opinion. And that public opinion will result in "open season" against reforms.

The people would see a removal of Antarinejad as a way of telling Khamenei and his hardline goons that the days of bullying the Iranian people are numbered, if not over. Khamenei saw that, and saw the threat to the regime that this would undoubtedly pose, and ultimately decided that his monkey would stick around another four years. That should explain to even the most ignorant why that primate is so arrogant on TV, equating our homeland's future to the outcome of a football match.

Considering Team Melli couldn't even score a single goal against North Korea, using a football analogy underscores his stupidity.

I, for one, will not ridicule the voters. I feel horribly for them, that they were teased and toyed with in the way that they have been. They were and still are so desperate for a change that they seized upon the first thing they saw as a chance, even though Moussavi realistically would only put a less menacing face on the regime.

And now the one-armed jackal will use these demonstrations as fodder for even greater crackdowns, calling it "un-Islamic", and fueled by the encouragement and interference of the U.S. and Israel.

But. it's OK, right? It's only "four more years", right?

someone criticizes my avatar as a propaganda (leaves out the nasty words so she wouldn't get deleted), another one says people who like the same type of poetry are the same people (hello, 90% of the people in Moshaereh enjoyed each other's poems and quoted the same poets). another one catches someone in a GOTCHA moment just for having commented on a personal attack and then right in front of my eyes Jaleh tells Mehrnaz that she'd be "the ONE person" she wouldn't mind being mistaken for...

hmmmm I guess I am not as popular as I was told, but I am one of the few that others obsess about, migi na chand ta comment payin tar ro bekhoon LOL

Here are the undeniable similarities between the two:

They both attack this Samsam character and call him essentially the same things (that he writes nonsense, he’s a racist, etc.);

They are both into poetry and their “poems” are very similar;

They both have a condescending writing style, even though neither one of them appears to know anything about the subject matter that they are writing on;

It appears that the two never appear on the same thread together with the exception that when they do, “Mehrnaz”’s sole function is to bolster Jaleho’s comments and compliment her on how good she is, how much everyone loves her, etc…. There is even at least one occasion in which “Mehrnaz” actually wrote a poem praising Jaleho!!!!! This makes sense considering how self-absorbed our hezbollahi friend Jaleho is.

The fact that one “addresses” you and the other does not, in my opinion, IS the reason why Jaleho has created this other username.  I’m sure you can figure out the underlying psychological reasons.

PS, putting periods between words makes your writings very difficult to read--as we are mentally used to pausing after each period.  I used to read your comments a lot, but now I avoid them just for that reason.  Reading them gives me a headache!

ID jan,

Those who call you an apologist don't read your blogs carefully. You're hardly an IRI supporter.  It's true, the next 4 years will have to be different.  You're right.  The hard liners and Khamenei will have to loosen their grip now that they've seen that their rhetoric isn't as popular as they thought.   I've heard that if AN uses the military ie martial law to calm the clashes.  It will only piss off the people more and may even further confirm fraudulence charges in the international community.   It's different this time.  These kids have some serious stamina and it's not just kids.  It's older people too.  I have a feeling they're going for it.  The news feeds have this as their main feed all weekend.   This is 100% more than 1999.  Gnarly!

Dear IRANdokht,

by Anonymous Reader (not verified) on

I sense a tint of frustration and resentment in your response to my comment. I wrote the comment in support of your blog and your earlier responses to other comments posted thereunder. Among so many blogs posted on this website covering the June 12th election and its aftermath, I found yours to be the most insightful.

For those of us who had the fortitude not to lose ourselves in the brouhaha generated around the election and its ramifications, and saw this event as just one episode of many in the arduous evolution of our country from patriarchalism to democracy, the emotional rollercoaster shown by many contributors to this site, while understandable, appears sophomoric.

In the absence of reliable information, and abundance of propaganda emanating from sources of questionable integrity, the prudent approach is to rely on the knowledge and experience we have acquired throughout our adult life, to appreciate what is going on in our country, rather than ingesting the sensational half-truth we are being fed by the news industry, and its amateur copycats.

You sold your people out the first day of such a major event without knowing the facts?!! and now shedding tears for them?

What would you have said if you were around in 1953?

What does that tell us about your other judgements?

Come out openly and write a short new blog and tell those you contradicted for telling you the facts that you were wrong and apologize for disrespecting millions of Iranians by openly telling them they are the uptown minority and to expect 4 more years chosen by majority.

But do not delete this apologist mark on your record one day, that would be so cowardish.

He's asked his supporters to gather on Monday afternoon which will be in a few hours.

I wrote the blog when there was a lot of confusion and not much of a protest yet and things had not escalated to this level. After reading and listening to all analysis and articles about the election fraud and witnessing the latest developments, I am also convinced that there was more than tweaking going on now as I mentioned in my earlier comments...

Irandokht jaan, I'm no

by desi on

Irandokht jaan,

I'm no statistician.   However here's how I see things.  Iran's urban population stands at 64%.  Most Iranians live in the big cities.  Most Iranian's within the major cities showed an overwhelming support for Moussavi.  Most people who vote, wether you're in Iran or the US tend to be more educated and willing in engaging in the democratic process.  Which in my opinion would then reduce the rural vote.  In other words if all 35% of people in the shahrestans did vote and voted overwhelmingly for AN.  He would still be the loser.  In my opinion this was a huge sham.  It's such a pity.  During the Iranian elections in the past, the only time Iranians came out in droves and voted is when there was a viable reformist candidate.  Which only means during the next elections Iranians won't vote AT ALL regardless of who the candidates are.  I think it's funny that Khamenei is boasting about the democratic turn out when the only reason there was a turn out at all was because most people who voted obviously voted AGAINST the incumbant. Which makes me wonder why Ahmedinejad, to quell all rumors, not do a recount.  He has nothing to lose, if in fact it was a landslide as he says.  It is also very dissapointing that Moussavi hasn't addressed his supporters.  It's interesting to see what happens within the next few days with house arrests and rumors of Rafsanjani's resignation.  A 62% landslide is impossible!!!  At least agar meekhan kolah sare mardom bezaran make it seem some what plausible.

Which also confirms my theory that Khamenei and Netanyahu are secret lovers.  What a win win for the IRI and Israel.  Chee fekr meekony?  Hala har do ta shoon meetoonand be ham deege hamle bekonand and their prophecy will be fulfilled.

I also received an email with similar numbers, but the fact is that none of the results, official or non-official cannot be proven. Iran does not have an international monitoring of the voting system and the numbers that are given cannot in fact be disputed nor proven fraudulent
as unbelievable as they are

If you want me to explain those numbers, as you can see I did not assume those numbers were correct and I was replying to someone who mentioned different results and gave those numbers as an example.

I hope I am clear this time. Thanks for your comment.

If you think this election was fair and the best candidate (Mamood) has won and as you put it Mousavi is just a "sore loser", I guess you haven’t read or watched any news that are coming from Iran in the last 2 days.

You have chosen not to see what the “The Winner” along with the police is doing on the streets or perhaps you don’t care. People being attacked, beaten and jailed to name a few for wanting their votes to be counted, and since when you believe that IRI is capable of producing “fair” elections even in a relative sense of the word?

People anger is more about lack of freedom and prevalence of repression, Estebdaad, hopefully you still know what that means. It's not about Mousavi! I wonder if you can see the bigger picture, can you?

IRANdokht,

by Anonymous Reader (not verified) on

I have also received a similar e-mail purportedly showing the votes’ breakdown released by employees of the Ministry of Interior. However, I noticed something unusual about the numbers in this list. Is it incidental that in the number of votes reported here for Mosavi, Amadinejad and Rezaei no digit is repeated, but the rejected and Karubi's numbers had five identical digits, in the same order?

It is not difficult to calculate the odds for such an incident, and - I tell you - it's going to be very very small. Certainly, the odds for this list to be bona fide are smaller than those for Andrew Sullivan’s linear fit.
