Prior to her triumphant election as Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher as conservative party candidate, was to tour the Middle East and particularly Iran and Egypt. Thatcher is said to have been a staunch supporter of the Shah at the time of the révolution and had hoped to offer assylum to the Iranian Monarch prior to entering office. To her dismay she was advised not to by the Foreign Office. (Source: persianrealm.com)

Thatcher's suits go under hammer Christie's

Thatcher's suits go under hammer (bbc)

A set of outfits worn by Margaret Thatcher in the 1970s are to be auctioned at Christie's on Monday.

The suits, all of which were worn by the former prime minister in the early part of her career, are thought to be the first of Lady Thatcher's clothes to be sold at a public auction.

A handbag carried by her when meeting US President Ronald Reagan raised £25,000 at a charity auction last year.

The seven outfits are being sold by a private collector.

The sale is taking place at Christie's as part of its "London Sale", a one-off themed auction being held to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and London 2012.

Thank you for another great blog Darius jaan

by anglophile on

That most interesting interview with some of Mrs Thacher's ministers (sorry FA jaan but Maggie and I are close and personal) reveals one important distiction between the conservative party and the labour party: the former still values this most forgotten symbol of pride called "honour" whereas the latter has long buried and forgotten it. Margareth Thacher is a woman of honur and she showed it many times during her premiership as in her standing behind General Pinochet when he was visitng London in 1998.

Aslo not to forget another man of honour: Michael Hesletine

Thanks again.

My Dear Fellow She got her well deserved title 'Lady' and confered the Order of the Garter AFTER her Premiership not prior ...

You see my dear fellow contrary to your egalitarian world Monarchies honor their subjects upon merit which explains that people from across the social, religious, ethnic and ideological spectrum of society can qualify at some point with the title "sir" or "lady" even if they are not made of aristocratic stock !

Those of us who are picky on the proper usage of names and titles should act as role models for those who don't care for such matters...She is Lady Thatcher, or even better Baroness Thatcher who will receive a state funeral whenever her last earthly day comes around......Maggie sounds more suitable for His Majesty's Certified Massage Therapist in charge of His stiff muscles.

Speaking of funeral, I was expecting a blog on Andrew Sarris from you.........
