Fereydoun Farokhzad 10 days Prior to his assassination
by Darius Kadivar
12-Jun-2011

Entertainer, poet and intellectual Fereydoun Farokhzad in Sweden ten days prior to his assassination invited to a conference to speak about his famed sister, his own art and Iranian struggle for Freedom and Democracy. This was exactly 10 days before his assassination in Germany on August 6th 1992.

Farrokhzad's last public appearance in Sweden 10 days before his assassination:

About Fereydoun Farrokhzad (October 7, 1936 - August 6, 1992):

Fereydoun Farrokzad was first and foremost a great entertainer, a gifted artist and most probably one of the most outspoken Iranians be it before or after the revolution that shook his belovedcountry and was to ultimately destroy everything he stood for. He was a lover of Beauty and the Arts. He was the brother of one of Iran’s greatestcontemporary poets, and militant feminist: Forough Farrokhzad, who also died in a tragic car accident in the late1960’s. Fereydoun Farrokhzad was also quite openly a Constitutional Monarchist singing in London to honor the death ofthe Imperial Army officers who died during the failed Nojeh Coup, that ultimately set him on the Top of the Blacklist of the Islamic Republic’s DeathSquads. It would be hypocritical and inaccurate to claim the contrary in the name of political correctness or in the name of one’s personalpolitical convictions or preferences. Farrokhzad never denied it be it in private or in public that he was faithful to an Era which benefited to hisprofessional life and success. However to boil him down to a royalist activist and/or royalist icon would be equally reductive. He was one of the GreatIranian Entertainers of his time who truly revolutionized the Iranian Entertainment Scene and Television Shows. He was often copied, imitated butnever equaled. It was also because of his professionalism and work ethics that he turned his back on the mediocrity of many LA based TV channels and programsbecause he was disappointed by their lack of sincerity and faith to the cause of freedom of Iran and Iranians. He spent his personal fortune and energy torally Iranians against the Islamic Republic by performing worldwide in any major European or American where there was an Iranian community be itLondon, Toronto, LA, New York or Paris. His closest friends and advisors would vainly try to convince him to stop making vehement patriotic speeches orcriticizing openly the clerical regime of Tehran but it was useless for Farrokhzad was not a man to be intimidated by anyone. He believed in EVERY Wordhe uttered and his stamina and bold comments would stir passionate reactions from his fans and critics alike. He was a Professional entertainer whodisguised his inner anguishes with a Big Smile. Farrokhzad was deeply attached to his country and countrymen maybe more than any other artist and compatriotof his generation. A man who could be seen in the company of beautiful women and enjoying the company of his friends and fellow colleagues like Aref,Sattar, Mahasty or Googoosh, equally in times of Popularity as well as in times of exile was in fact a solitary who like most artists overcome their innershyness and inhibitions by overcoming them in the public eye.

Given Farrokhzad’s popularity and stamina that was threatening the Iranian Theocracy’s foundations and reputation outside Iran,

the Islamic Republic tried to undermine Farrokhzad’s reputation. He was falsely accused of sexual depravity and even bisexuality, all of which were pretexts todistract public opinion on his ever growing popularity within a politically divided Iranian Diaspora. Fereydoun Farrokhzad understood the pain of othersand would often interact with his audience to pull them towards more solidarity and compassion for their fellow compatriots. During his lifetime, many unjustlyfelt he was overdoing it, but ultimately and to the Very End, he fought like a Lion for the honor and Freedom of his country. Not surprisingly, the Islamicrepublic's agents operating in Germany assassinated him at his home in Bonn On August 9, 1992. Three days later his body was found lying in a pool of bloodwith his dog whimpering beside him.

Veiled Prophet of Khorasan

Fereydoon Farrokhzad

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on

was a true Iranian patriot and a good man. I wish more people had his decency and courage. His sexuality is irrelevant and I could not care less about it. His love of Iran is what matters to me.

He was great. I was never a big fan of his music but I am a fan of him. Personally I preferred Fereydoon Foroughi as far as music goes. No matter one day there will be a monument in Iran in the memory of Farrokhzad.

Oh so now you ask a question then wish to dictate the answer ?

Just read yourself again and see who is confused !

Sorry I'm out !

I'm sure we both have better things to do !

hirre

I think you are very confused...

by hirre on

First off cool down, you are self-trolling... Second of all why are you randomly lecturing about different systems? This thread is (was) about F.F., don't ruin it with random videos and obvious facts about monarchy vs republic (I haven't even gone there (and won't), so why are you?)...

Darius Kadivar

hirre jan If you did your homework logically you woudn't ask ...

by Darius Kadivar on

The Monarchy is Not a Party it's a State Apparatus ... a system of government if you will in the same way that a Republic is another form of government.

Both systems have existed or exist to this day in both democratic or dictatorial forms. Neither became Democratic overnight except in your Utopian Vulcania perhaps ...

Clearly You are Not Entirely Green Blooded ... Or Are You ?

PS: I am not going to engage into a back and forth discussion on this thread, I think I have said all I had to say on this subject. You don't share my assessments fine feel free to offer your counter arguments but Don't think that entitles you or your Jomhurykhah like minds to lecture me on what I should blog on or believe in. All the more that I have spent enough time and energy answering to your recurrent and similar questions and criticisms in the past on all issues brought up. I hate repeating myself to deaf ears particularly when they are Pointed.

It is obvious that you are an internet troll...

Why do you post one sentence and then post a random video?

E.g.

"Constitutional Monarchies are neither Left Wing Nor Right Wing they are Democratic and tolerate all political beliefs ...

ROYAL FORUM: Iran-born Hanif Bali elected to Swedish Parliament

"

In the above case, are you confusing the swedish M-party with the swedish royalist party? Or do you mean that Hanif Bali is a royalist that works for the M-party? It isn't clear in the post because you probably don't have enough material on the web or you simply forget to connect the dots...

Either way, when it comes to posting interesting videos you are great, but when you reply to comments it becomes more like a trolling sensation...

Constitutional Monarchies are neither Left Wing Nor Right Wing they are Democratic and tolerate all political beliefs ...

ROYAL FORUM: Iran-born Hanif Bali elected to Swedish Parliament

But maybe you still have not come to terms with your own insecurity in regard to a concept fully understood and advocated by millions of monarchists worldwide including the late FF:

ROYAL FORUM: Explaining the Concept of a Constitutional Monarchy to a Staunch Republican

So i guess it's never late to do your Homework instead of reducing the Royalist cause to a bunch of Cheap Bazari LA TV stations which Farrokhzad as much as I abhore

But I do hope You Live Long and Prosper nevertheless In Your unearthly Vulcanian Cosmetic Republic ...

Another thing D.K. in general (related to many threads)

by hirre on

Why are you and 1-2 people constantly trying
relate everything with monarchy (even if it's true or not)?

If it's not bad enough that iranians are divided, instead of trying to unite more iranians you are constantly reminding them of "royal" ghosts from the past... As a freelancer journalist you should be more broad...

hirre

that melody

by hirre on

was remixed to "yade Iran bekheyr" after the islamic revolution which says more that F.F. developed from being a tunnel-headed royalist to a cultural nationalist (not even a hardcore leftist)...

Believe me, this makes sense... Your videos in this thread from 1992 is from umeå sweden... That is a region that was dominated by leftist that came to Sweden from Iran during late 80's and early 90's, even my parents lived close to umeå (Sweden in general was a place that basically dominated by leftist, those who wished for glory and success went to the USA)... The point is that if he would be a hardcore royalist, he would not be able to gather that ~400 people crowd there, because people (especially the leftist) were too prejudice 20 years ago...Many even considered F.F. still a hardcore leftist back then even though he was trying to say that he cared more for Iranian culture than different parties/groups...

Everyone was butt kissing during the golden era of Pahlavi ....

Did he sing this song after the fall of pahlavi or before it? I have not heard this before ... well ... i was not a big fan of his music back then .....

I do not know many things about him. Now, however, I am very much interested to know especially after listening to his speech today in the clips that you have provided ...

thanks

hmm

by hirre on

I think my parents attended this session with F. F. back in 1992...

hirre

That video didn't work D.K.

by hirre on

Also I have seen videos of him saying "I'm not a rightist, leftist, communist, royalist... etc"...

Another thing is that in the case of khomeini vs the shah, the majority would probably pick the shah, including F.F.... I think he was above all those types of parties/groups, this is also reflected in basically all of his speeches and that is why many people loved and still love and respect him... I think he switched from being a artist/"cultural monarchist" to a more "people person" during his years...

You even posted:

//iranian.com/main/blog/darius-kadivar/pr...

at 4:00 min he even says he was a leftist 10 years prior to the date the video was being shot...

And

by Soosan Khanoom on

I am not sure who really killed him cause he was out spoken and he never failed to criticize the opposition groups out side of Iran as much as he criticize the IRI ....

He was a political activists with many enemies ...... and of course IRI would not mind seeing him dead but so do others.......

by the way, has his murderer ever been captured?...

Thanks for the clips ... I will try to listen to them all ... the two top ones that I listened was really touching and he had many great points there......

Soosan Khanoom

Darius

by Soosan Khanoom on

I have read that Fereydoun Farrokhzad was never a monarchist. If anything, he was a big critic of the monarchy and the monarchial regime. Fereydoun was a lifetime Socialist and a solid Nationalist.

Man of the future

by hirre on

This person was atleast 30 years ahead of his own time... I personally know that many of the people who participated in the revolution didn't think much of F. F. during that time, but now they finally understand what he was talking about... People were so busy romantisizing the islamic revolution that they forgot where they came from...

Paradoxal rant of a narrow minded Jomhurykah who can't read

by Darius Kadivar on

Nor Watch for that matter ...

To begin with he was not gay, he was Man Period !

A Man of Flesh and Blood !

I don't define or judge people based on their sexual orientation, tastes or color of skin. And when they are dead I try to look at their entire life and try to see what they have left as a legacy good or bad as human beings

Farrokhzad was a lover of life, of beauty in all it's forms and someone who suffered deeply to see his country and it's civilization be reduced to such a level of low esteem both inside Iran but also worldwide.

You are either ignorant or have never bothered noticing that Character Assassinations to this VERY Day have often tainted the IRI's behavior towards it's Opponents.

Does Majid Tavakoli's name ring a bell ?

//payvand.com/news/09/dec/Majid-Tavakoli-arrested-in-veil.jpg

There is absolutely no judgement on Farrokhzad's sexual orientation or deemed bisexuality (which was never confirmed )but the fact that his deemed sexuality seemed to obsess people more than his actual death.

This deemed bisexuality was brought up at the time of his assassination as if murdering him was not enough, they also had to destroy his public image and attack his honor in the eyes of his fans, family and friends when he was dead and could not respond to any of these allegations fit for Tabloid Chronicles.

THAT to me is Character Assassination added to the physical elimination of this great patriot against which few expressed their outrage.

At the time of Farrokhzad's assassination the first thing that came up in conversations in the Diaspora Circles (who unlike Farrokhzad were never ready to lift a finger for their fellow countrymen and fellow countrywomen back home) was to dismiss his assassination by IRI death squads on grounds that it was a crime committed by his so called lover, as if his entire commitment to Iran, it's poetry, culture or his political stance were of no importance and that his entire body of work was of no significance but Boy was his sexual life a subject of fantasy and all kinds of absurd allegations.

I know how public opinion and imagination particularly amongst us Iranians can go wild particularly when our so called ANN TELECTUALS wish to cast judgment on what they ignore.

Clearly It seems you have not even bothered watching this marvelous conference entirely before making your Ignorant Comment and all the deep things this wonderful man says which are not merely for "entertainment". It is not only about Iranian literature, culture, music but a good part of his speech was precisely focused on the way sexual relationships and behaviors in Iranians society are so fucked up because of our backward mindsets imposed by a society deeply hostage of it's patriarchal and religious traditions.

He clearly states how his own sister was accused of being a "lesbian" and a "whore" for writing poetry about relationships between women and women as between men and women.

Your Comment only proves that you did not even bother watching or listening to the entire conference which does not surprise me.

Your reaction is the perfect example of what Farrokhzad denounces: IGNORANCE !

But then I guess that is what You Jomhurykhah's are capable of in the end.

Making uninformed claims, interpretations and rushing to conclusions simply because you can't read.

As for Farrokhzad Roohash Shad !

And may his assassins be brought to trial one day or Rot in hell !

Best,

DK

PS: I happen to know Farrokhzad's sister Pouran who lives in Iran and can vouch that all this character assassination against his brother's honor was bolony. So spare me your Moralistic Stance, Alaky Harfe Nameezanam Agha Jaan !

The paradoxical rants of an open minded royalist!

by reader1 on

“The Islamic Republic tried to undermine Farrokhzad’s reputation. He was falsely accused of sexual depravity and even bisexuality “

Are you suggesting that if he were rightly (as against wrongly) accused of sexual depravity and even bisexuality he would have deserved to be punished or perhaps murdered?!! Are you revealing a hidden prejudice?

The sexual orientation is not a conscious choice. You and I as heterosexual men are not blessed to be what we are – we are what we are - our traits are the product of our genes and not of our upbringing or culture. Farokhzad was most likely a homosexual man - this in itself should neither be an indictment or endorsement of his colourful character. He was a great entertainer and way ahead of his time.
