What luck! I got a chance to see the Shahnbehzadeh Ensemble at the Richmond Folk Music Festival on the weekend [video clip]. It was the first time I saw them live. I was already a big fan after seeing his videos on YouTube. And I'm thrilled and honored that they accepted iranian.com's invitation to perform in San Francisco on October 23rd. Also those in Los Angeles should not miss him on October 24th . For more tour dates see here.

Seems like fun That pink velvety bag pipe must smell like sweat!

by Anonymouse on

What do they call those bag pipes?  Kheymeh? Karnaa? They're sort of like the Scottish bag pipes but of course Iranian and from the South.

He is dancing and all sweaty and then he picks the bag pipe and hugs it!  You do that in several concerts and the bag is going to smell like crap!  I imagine the bag pipe is from an animal's skin, probably goat or sheep, and then you add velvet cover to absorb sweat and there you go!

Everything is sacred

Saeid Shanbehzadeh

I so look forward to seeing the Shanbehzadeh Ensemble perform live in San Francisco. From all that I have seen and heard from them, we are in for a wonderful treat.

Iran's regional music has never been appreciated and celebrated for its purity and unencumbered glory, adorning and enriching everyday life in Iran's provinces and remote rural locations, during celebrations, funerals, and just plain life.

I remember listening to Maestro Hossein Alizadeh once when he talked about how music of Gilan and Kurdistan were alternately happy and upbeat to encourage group activities of planting and harvesting fields, and at other times sad and melancholic to mark periods of rest and meditation for the exhausted farmers. I look forward to asking Saeid Shanbehzadeh about the tempo of Boushehri music and its integration into the lifestyles of Boushehris.

I am sad he felt discriminated against while living in Iran. I wish it were not true, even though I know it is. I look forward to meeting the group and seeing them on stage.
