We, the undersigned, view the circumstances surrounding the Iranian authorities' arrest of Hossein Derakhshan (hoder.com), one of the most prominent Iranian bloggers, as extremely worrying. Derakhshan's disappearance, detention at an unknown location, lack of access to his family and attorneys, and the authorities' failure to provide clear information about his potential charges is a source of concern for us.
The Iranian blogging community is one of the largest and most vibrant in the world. From ordinary citizens to the President, a diverse and large number of Iranians are engaged in blogging. These bloggers encompass a wide spectrum of views and perspectives, and they play a vital role in open discussions of social, cultural and political affairs.
Unfortunately, in recent years, numerous websites and blogs have been routinely blocked by the authorities, and some bloggers have been harassed or detained. Derakhshan's detention is but the latest episode in this ongoing saga and is being viewed as an attempt to silence and intimidate the blogging community as a whole.
Derakhshan's own position regarding a number of prisoners of conscience in Iran has been a source of contention among the blogging community and has caused many to distance themselves from him. This, however, doesn't change the fact that the freedom of expression is sacred for all not just the ones with whom we agree.
We therefore categorically condemn the circumstances surrounding Derakhshan's arrest and detention and demand his immediate release.

Is he really arrested?
by aaj sr (not verified) on Fri Dec 19, 2008 10:25 AM PSTWhy IRI arrest some one who was their allies?
He is not arrested (if we presume he is arrested) for freedom of expression, because he was not advocating anything against the regime, contrary, he was very loud and clear supporting Ahmadi Nejad and suppressing oppositions in and outside of Iran.
Did he really think he would be arrested?
First and foremost:
No one should be punished for "freedom of expression" including Derekhshan (who hurts and harmed so many people mostly by accusatory, lies and baseless rumors) and we should do our best to put enough pressures on IRI and through international community, NGOs asking for his release or make IRI to come forward and officially charge him with his alleged crime and according to international and Iranian laws allow him to select his lawyer and subsequently allow him visitation.
I agree with JJ about his comment here, but how do you distinguished and draw the line if someone spreading false rumors, using smear tactics, put others lives in danger or ruining their reputation? IS THIS considered "FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION?.Someone who plays with prestige and social respect of innocent people specially those who are fighting IRI for their despicable oppression and atrocities? Are we categorizing such acts as freedom of expression? then what's a difference between Ahmdi Nejad's falsification, deceits and lies whenever he gives a speech in or outside of Iran, including infront of UN assembly?
Here; there are a few comments, observations and questions:
Derekhshan as a smart person, knew if he visited Israel and discuss it openly in his blogs he would be in trouble if he goes back to Iran, he knew his arrest was obvious to say the least, BUT, if he was not arrested what type of question you would have in your mind?. Granted he has used his Canadian passport to obtain entry visa to Israel, but boasting his achievement in his blog and his interviews with couple of Israelis news media, blasted all over the world, would not have gone unnoticed with IRI authorities. So how is it that such a smart person, who is familiar with these type of protocol made such a big mistake?
Derekhshan hurts many people , many of his accusations and attacks were brutal, unjustified, untrue and in many cases based on rumors and accusation ( some believe, being controversial, he wanted to get noticed ), he has taken that direction to be controversial but at the expense of hurting many innocent people. So, where do we draw the line of freedom of speech? This issue, as mentioned earlier does not mean he should not be free or have a meaningful open trial in court of justice. But again, his arrest has nothing to do with his writing.
Derekhshan openly defended Ahmadi Nejad's policies and a few of his articles published in Kayhan of Tehran, praising and supporting IRI's views, reflected as proof of legitimacy of IRI government, therefore, the question is why such a individual who A) was supportive of the government B) writes IRI supportive articles C) ridicule and unjustifiably, untruly, criticize many Iranian oppositions, (in and out side of Iran) should be arrested?
Final question: What is the difference between jailed activists (students, writers, blogers, women activist, reporters) and Derekhshan who supports the regime while having the luxury of being free and could have make a difference by his writing?.
Whom should we support and create petition for?
Assuming, soon we have our freedom in Iran, are we giving amnesty to all or are we creating court of justice for those who helped the regime?
Final: Am I suspicious about the whole things? you bet, I am.

'Persepolis' Reduces Iran to Black and White
Marjane Satrapi's film, Persepolis must have made George Bush and his new ally, Nicolas Sarokzy, quite happy. After all, despite Satrapi's rhetoric against the two leaders, her film's core argument is one that Bush and Sarkozy have long been busy constructing: the evil state versus the wonderful people.
Aesthetically, Persepolis is a refreshing and beautiful black-and-white animation, but it is also built on a black-and-white viewpoint of Iran.
The above comment was written by HD about Persepolis. He has also slandered and badmouthed every single person who has defended the cause of freedom and human rights in Iran. A few weeks in detention in ward number 209 of Evin might not be a bad idea so he can feel what others have gone through. Hossein Derakhshan must take responsiblity for his actions and words. Because of his slanders a lot of good people were jailed. Where is our responsiblity towards them?

He is detained? His human and civil rights denied?
by Farhad anti-traitor (not verified) on Fri Dec 19, 2008 03:02 AM PSTThis is a joke, right? How do you know he is detained and his human and civil rights denied? And why would it be? Why would IRI detain one of its most avid supporters? Prisoners of conscience in 60’s in iran know well these IRI tactics of giving credibility to their moles for later use. Last time I checked, IRI denies freedom of expression and civil rights to its opposition, not those supporting it. you don’t know if his is detained or why he has been detained, certainly it wasn’t because of his opposition to IRI.
This petition is an insult to every iranian in Pursuit of human rights and freedom, taking them for bunch of fools. This is an insult to all those students who stood in 17 azar asking for freedom and removal of dictatorship in Iran by risking their neck.
As far as I am concerned this aghazadeh Hoder is guilty of treason. Even in most advanced democracies, treason and siding with interests of enemies of your nation are punished heavily and not treated as "freedom of expression", especially in times when the nation is invaded and being ravaged by its most notorious sworn enemies for 30 years. Instead of wasting your time and ours on this imposter, write a petition for those really detained for opposing the IRI dictatorship and risking their lives for establishment of democracy and human rights in our country.
In defense of 70 million Iranians detained and denied of their human and civil rights by IRI and supported and cheered by those like Hoder, I say this petition is an outrage.
Information for intelligence and propaganda purposes.
by Zion on Fri Dec 19, 2008 02:28 AM PSTI remember reading about this guy's visit to Israel. From what I now read about him and his mode of behavior, I doubt he is being tortured or maltreated. Most probably they are questioning him to extract all the information (and misinformation) that they can. The kind that can be used for intelligence and propaganda purposes afterwards.
