Thanks for the remarks. I couldn't describe Dariush better myself. I would like to add something you may have forgotten. I think Dariush has an internal conflict too. He feels guilty inside about a sin he often commits. He tries to make it up to by making donnations to his local masjed. He has resolved this problem/conflict in this way and so he feels somewhat comfortable committing this particular sin. As you know according to mullahs (you can verify this in their "tozihol masaael books), masturbation is a sin.

But I really believe he does feel guilty after committing this sin. Each time he tells himself that it is the last time, that he quits. But then again he sees an attractive and sexy woman out there, and he is at it again.

You were probably born after 1979, came to the U.S. with your parents where you lived in a cramped apartment and watched your parents struggle to make ends meet working jobs that you and they felt were demeaning, especially because they or you were working for Americans, who you feel are beneath you. (some are, and some not).

You did well academically, but struggled socially, because you weren't permitted to fully assimilate into Western culture by your parents, who feared that you would turn evil and lose your identity. You ended up as an introvert in school with no male friends and certainly no female friends. Your high school senior picture shows you without even a hint of a smile on your face, and more than likely you are the person with the largest nose and the darkest complexion whose ancestors weren't dragged over here in chains on a slave ship 400 years earlier.

You went to college, probably a community college because of financial considerations. (Completely honorable and understandable, since tuition costs are outrageous everywhere). That embittered you because you know that with your grades you were eligible for academic scholarships but never took the opportunity to apply for them, ultimately losing out on the opportunity to pursue a higher education on your terms to someone with an Anglo surname, or perish the thought, a Jewish one. You did well, but probably agonized about having classes with a female professor or instructor's assistant, feeling she should be home cooking dinner and that she couldn't possibly teach you anything you didn't already know, and has no business in the workplace.

You've completed most of your studies, if not all, but your prospects for success are limited by your perception that you won't be hired because everyone has it out for you because you are middle eastern or because of the similar perception held by your parents, who have programmed you to think this way about people who are different, as they don't know anything else.

You communicate primarily via internet, as it allows you to avoid dealing with people face to face, something that causes you tremendous stress. You probably earn a living in the IT field, and work from home, with your paychecks deposited directly into your account. Your bank account is more than likely a joint account with another family member. You have business cards that you made (on your computer of course) with your name and the title of "software engineer", and you are 6 to 9 months from having your job outsourced to India for 3% of your current compensation.

Your social life, if any, consists of hours of conversation and debate on topics such as religion, politics, and computer software programs. Your peers are probably other Iranians with similar upbringing, as well as Pakistanis, Arabs, and possibly the token Sri Lankan or Indonesian. Once in a while you will go out and have a slice of pizza with these guys. You haven't even done so much as to share a meal or a cup of coffee or tea with a female that isn't your blood relative. You probably don't even have one female on your Instant Messager list and the only females you have in your cell phone's address book is your mother and sister, (assuming you have one, otherwise just your mother). You probably pleasure yourself often, whenever you are alone, with erotic thoughts of white trash like Britney Spears as you do your 5-digit disco dance, picturing her with her shaved head in order to delay your happy ending as long as possible.

If we the "religious people" are emotional and irrational, then shouldn't you have the upper hand and not resort to cussing and getting angry? And if you look at that list properly, their are many groups that want a secular Iran, groups that want vilayat faqih abolished, and groups who want a secular republic. We used to have more political parties, but they resorted to violence (such as the communists) to reach their ends, and they were outlawed (the same is the case in western countries if a political party takes up arms).

When was the last time you were in Iran? You left 28 years ago, and think you know so much about our political system and the vibrancy?

All the Shah's regime had was the party that agreed with the Shah. The IRI has over 280 political parties that all disagree with each other on almost EVERY SINGLE ISSUE.

This debate is the LEVEL of political freedom when comparing IRI with Shah. That is it. We are not comparing IRI with the most liberal democracy out there, just with Shah's regime.

Which one is MORE politically free? Shah or IRI? Which one has more POLITICAL freedom? Which one has more competitive elections? Which one has a freer press (have you seen the stuff they broadcast on IRI recently? they criticize the governments decisions on tackling hijab issues in the harshest words on TV and put down the pasdaran, etc.)

That is all I ask. Which one is free? the Shah's dictatorial regime that had RASTAKHIZ and nothing else, or the IRI that has COMPETITIVE elections and political parties that criticize the regime.
