by Esmail Nooriala

In response to J. Rashidian's reply to my comment. This is the point, why is it that any time the topic is care for a country you present it in the most negative and extreme view? you only speak of chauvinsit and extremist nationalists, any time there is the talk of Iran you lump everyone together that they are nationalists, anyone speaks of Iran's history you brand them as "nationalists", you have been doing this consistently in the past (some other permanent writers at Iranian . com too). I'm sorry, but it is very immature. People, most people in the world have an affinity and care for their country, there's nothing hideous about it. I don't know what's going on in planet Mars, but this is what is going on in our planet. And you deliberately sensationalize your argument with directing it towards (your justifying your position) the most extremist racists, as examples to prove your point.

Persian vs Turks

by ThanksGod4Atheism (not verified) on

One thing about Azari ethnics of our nation is that we brand everyone who talks about Persian chauvinism as separatists...They are not...Many want only one thing, to be respected as a distinct culture inside Iran and as Iranians... The very first element of that is the language... An Azari in his/her own country has to be alien to his/her own mother tongue, despite being a great ethnic minority among whom great many Iranian characters such as Sattar Khaan and Baagher khan have emerged. Not only their language and culture is not respected but also they have to go through a literature that glorifies everything Persian and daemonizes Turan and Torks...Even calling himself what he is can be controversial...The same way to some extent his fellow Iranian Kurds are treated in neighboring Turkey...

1400 years we have been Muslims and under Turks... Doesn't that make us fool bunch who can not even remove the suppression of Arabs who were a bunch of desert riders from the deepest elements of culture, that is religion??? Do not tell me all our ancestors were doing TAGHIEH when they fasted in Ramazan and when they woke up to the reciting of Muhammad's name for 1400 years... Why is it that Iranians, now, have realized Islam was not them???
Islam is only born among Arabs. Iranians made it a big thing...Islam is Persian more than anything... both Sunni and Shiite versions. Go and read Ebne-Khaldoon and Tabari if you have any doubts!

Dear Rashidian

The definition of two words I mentioned in my comments are exactly what you can find in dictionary but apparently you like just to debate for the sake of discussion. What you are referring to is Chauvinism not nationalism.

You are saying: If we want to get rid of the IRI, why we should provoke other nations, groups of ethnic people, (in my standard)?

I think completely wise versa!
A minority tries to provoke a nation. Iran has one nation calls:"Iranians" that includes different ethnics.
I don't think Kurds or Azaries or... were under any special oppression. We all are oppressed by mullahs right now.

When a Kurd or Azari is able to talk Kurdish or Turkish it means nobody interrupted them learning it and the rest is just a myth.
We want to get rid off IRI and in order to do that we do not have to pay any ransom to any group.

Satar khan and Bagher khan are two national heroes of "Iranian" nation like Babak and Yaghoob Leith and Koroush and Dariush...

I don't get it why the term of "national oppression" or " Setameh melli" came to Iranian history and conversations right after Stalin's reign.

Patriotism vs. Nationalism and multi ethnic vs. multi national

by Mohammad Jahan-Parvar (not verified) on

Mr. Rashidian is correct in differentiating between nationalism and patriotism. Ideas and terminologies evolve over time. In our modern parlance, whether we use modern English, French, or German (I am not sure about German since I do not speak the language), the word "nationalism" does have negative connotations. It is associated with mild to strong forms of ethnocentrism, racism, or bigotry. One the other hand, for what most our dear readers refer to as nationalsim, the current terminology is indeed "patriotism" which indicates a love for your country.

This said, I have a serious problem with Mr. Rashidian's statement regarding "Iran is a multi national country". This statement is flat out wrong on several levels: A) A country, as it is defined by accepted terminology of international relations, is a nation-state. It may be "multiethnic", as it is in case of Switzerland, India, China, or Iran. It may be multiracial, as is the case in the US. But citizens of a country have just "one" nationality, that is what is printed on their passports. Hence, a "multi national country" is an oxymoron. Catalans and French Canadians are pushing for acceptence of multiple "nations" within a nation-state, but these are all thinly veiled seccesionist attempts and are generally scorned at international level. B) This terminology is incorrect in any language. C) While supremacist statements by anyone are absurd and meaningless, deragatory statements such as "The word "Persian" and its nationalistic repercussions do not describe Today's Iran. It is rather a symbolic word ... Today, Persian as an entity has no sense." are equally absurd and reprehensible. I have seen this tendency among many ex-or current Leftists attack persian heritage, history, and language (I guess, and I suspect that I am right) as some sort of childish, latent rebellion against now gone Pahlavi dynasty and its official state ideology. It is also quite interesting that Iranian ethnic nationalists (such as Arab or Azari separatists), who based on their own actions, political links, and printed material squarley qualify as fascist and/or legally criminal, get a total free pass by the same people who rile against mentioning Cyrus the great's name. Mr. Rashidian, you can not play both ends of the throughboard. It is as simple as that.

Mr. Rashidian

by Responder (not verified) on

Your argument is self-defeating. (1) Europe is hardly an example of morality as they were on each others' throats a few years back and several times in the past century. You should not confuse the relative peace there as sign of civilization. The peace there is due to presence and interests of america which keeps them in check. (2) Most of the terminology and its interpretations that you are using are of european mind-set. Most of these terms do not even have equivalents in farsi language, or are artificial modern words. The word racism itself has no historical equivalent in farsi language -- thanks god. (2) You don't like Persian-ness, yet you are really talking about partition or government of iran based on race -- turks vs. persians. You don't like Persian-ness because it is humiliating to, say turks. Yet I don't see you see Persians being humiliated when they were governed by turkic rulers for most of post-islamic times. And very recently, did you see any Persian complaining that shahbanou, a Tabrizi, would have been the ruler of iran had the Pahlavi regime continued. (3) How would your civilized germany feel if its minority turks want a piece of their land. The situation is the same in iran. Turks in that whole region are immigrants as all of asia minor was occupied by Medes and Greeks a millennium ago. That is why turks of that region look so different from turks of central asia. So, you see your racist Persians accepted Turks and their rulers, and even gave them two pieces of their land (Turkey and Republic of Azarbaijan). How would you feel if an uninvited guest comes to your house and then after a few days tells you that he wants to build a wall in the middle of your house and declare independence? (4) Finally, how about kurds and armenians that are spread all over map there. You want to subjugate them or deport them, which one? So, I really do not see the motivation behind these arguments except for misguidedness and extreme european-style racism (or nationalism if you wish) on your behalf. Iran is not saddam's iraq who deported arabs with persian blood; iran is not turkey who commited genocide against armenians and then deny it. My iran is the iran of Cyrus who takes pride in being just to all nations, first those under his rule, and then those outside his rule. If you don't share that pride then, no offense, but you are not an iranian, you were only born in iran. Fortunately you have many choice of places to live in these days: the civilized europe, and a long list of turkish countries, in asia minor or central asia. As iran belongs to iranians with respect for their shared culture and history. democracy and social justice, for everyone, will happend sooner or later in iran; but partition of the country based on race will not happen. Payandeh iran, ALL of iran.

I told one of your mates

by Jahanshah Rashidian on

I told one of your mates that I am patriotic and in this sensetive situation of our coutry we have to be all patriotic. This patriotism means apparently nationalism for you. I just briefly gave you a definition that and I am sure that nationalism will bring ills for any society, even if it does not seem at the beginning. This  extremist feeling can, like any other, turn into disaster. See please many examples I added to my comments.

In an Iranian, or may be American standard, the term is naively alleviated. It seems less harsh and demagogic. For an accademic writer like Mr. Nooriala, the term must be more significant therefore controversial; he does not write for grass roots, but people or political entities with certain fixed ideas.

This is not to nag at any one or any thing. No, I ask what this nationalism means for a country with multi ethnical entity? hopefully Mr. Noorial, or some one who wants to apply it on free Iran, describes it based on a provable and accademic standard.

If we want to get rid of the IRI, why we should provoke other nations, groups of ethnic people, (in my standard)? This is only a waste of reason.

To this friend from Iran Mr. Behrooz.

I was disappointed with your level: I do reject nationalism (in any place for any reason). You did not understand my points.

The idea of nationalism is simple: People attend in a stadium to cheer their country because they are nationalists. Unless you say they all think like Adolf Hitler!
We need nationalism to compete and improve in a civilized way and at the same time love the other nations. Is it imposibble if some one loves Persian litrature and is proud of it and at the same time enjoys Shekspear? And at the same time try to bring the best effort for his or her country?

I again repeat it: Nationalism and CHAUVINISM are different.

First of all a European Terminology only fitts a racist and fachist Eruope and not a compasionate Persia.
It was them who promoted racism and copmmited holocost and not us.

Secondly this is you who sees averything as blak and white. There is a very clear diference between national pride and patriotism on one hand and resicm on the other, and if you cannot see the difference then that is your problem.

What you have described in your reply is the caracteristics of a racist Facist Eurppean society who sent over 3 million Jews to their death in concentration campes.
Please do not try to prosecute us for their crimes.
However the situation in Iran has been totally diffrent from the start. Even in the height of our power Cyrus the Great have shown compasion and mercy towards other(even his enemies) nations(and that is not only my word but the word many indipendent historians)and that is someting to be damn well proud of.

Do not try to procecute us for the crime that your European friends have commited

Also I did not know that haveing a resonable grasp of a foreign language makes me less credible.

For your information there are alot of people in Iran who have a good grasp of other languages without even being to those countries

That for the simple reason of Internet

I just looked up the word, natinalism, in LAROUSSE, a globally worthy French dictiinary, I partly translate:

Nationalism is a doctrine that believes in the absolute priority of own national interests in relation to other nations
As a political Movement, it is to impose the predominance of the nation in all domains to other nations.

Only far right parties in Europe defend this natioalism, the strongest one is "Front national" (national front) in France. No european government calls itsel "nationalist"

Not being nationalist does not mean being forcibly marxist or worse Stalinist. The idea of international is a human and moral one. It should not irritate your anti communism or even anti democratic.

I am just a freedom lover and do not believe in any idea of submission, includin religion.

You are mixing up to different things:

Nationalism is: Devotion to the interests or culture of one's nation.
or The belief that nations will benefit from acting independently rather than collectively, emphasizing national rather than international goals.
or Aspirations for national independence in a country under foreign domination.

CHAUVINISM: is zealous and aggressive patriotism or blind enthusiasm for military glory.
or biased devotion to any group, attitude, or cause.

All the nations in the world specially in Europe that you talked about it are nationalist and nothing is wrong with that.

Don't you think it is about the time to forget intarnationalism?
Forget Lenin and Stalin and international anthem dude! live in reality.
You can be in love with your heritage and at the same time get along with the rest of the world peacefully and enjoy their culture as well.

Because natinalism humiliates, provokes, and fihgts other nations--see Arab nationalism under Nasser, Gaddafi, saddam..see also many nationalis corrupt dictarors who  robbed and destroyed their countries--the Shah, Carlos, Amin Dadda and see nationalist warmongers like Hitler, Stalin (during the 2 end war and bloody purges promoted natinalistic demagogy) see many political catastrophes with a tyoical "pan... or ...nationalist" attached to them.

Patiotism is a normal collective solidarity within a society or group while nationalism is an arm only in the hands of the leaders to abuse other groups and silent theirs.

Terminology

by Jahanshah Rashidian on

Mr. Behrooz,

Your English shows you might have been in an English speaking country, but I have never lived in such a country and am not bogged into a naive and black / white model of judgemnt. I use an European terminology  in which "nationalism" is a negative term and  has caused war, racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia and many other  catasterphes for humanity. I just take the consequences.

In the meanwhile, I am an Iranian-born German and am very linked to my original roots. I have seen and realised that this nationalism has the same results in Iran; it has also created dictatorship, cooruption, ethnical conflicts. I think in global peace and democracy, therefore in my terininolgy the word"nationalism" does not mean patriotism. As said, nationalism is in my point of view a collective selfishness masked under a fake patriotism. It serves dictators and corrupt leaders--pinochet, the Shah, Gulf sheiks, Carlos,...

So, do not please get me wrong maybe your"nationalism" is in fact my patriotism in a differnt terminology

Actually Mr Rashidian

May I ask, who made you the representative of Iranian Nation?

Time and again I find it so frustrating and arrogant of Iranian Diaspora who have hardly visited or lived in Iran for the past couple of decades, to announce themselves as the advocates of Iranian Interest.

I am a Iranian who actually lives in Iran. Although I have many economical and material needs which have been neglected by the IRI, they are not my only needs. I am not a machine that without any emotion prides and purpose that only needs fuel and maintenance. Now if that is a problem for you then you need to take your quarrel to the Old Mighty who created me this way.
I am not just an animal that only has material needs and you think once my belly is full, my bed is warn and I get to have sex twice a week all my needs have been met.
I find it immensely degrading when you and your like describes us only by material values and needs

This is so arrogant that like of you occupy the moral height ground and insult our love for our country, heritage and identity and refer to it as collective selfishness..

Well Mr Dalai Lama, Where have you been all these years? Just open your eyes and have a look around you.
For the past three centuries our country have been destroyed and our assets have been looted by very same Europe that you fell in love with their American co-conspirators, without any concern for our right or needs (Material or otherwise).
If that is not selfishness then I do not know what is.

May be a bit of selfishness in our part would not be so bad after all. If it helps us to find ourselves and get back on our feet

The bottom line is that all the nations in the world are after self-preservation and if you are blind enough not to see that then you have a serious problem.

Today more than any time in our history this country is facing danger of partition and if we do not find the common values and Icons that glue us together as a nation this country could vanish from the face of the planet.

Not that you really care. As long as your economical needs are met in your beloved Europe

Answer to Mr Nooriala's question!

by Ben Madadi on

Mr Nooriala, I hope you were able to write in English, even Iranians prefer to read and write in English and articles in English attract far more attention among the Iranians of the diaspora, however you can address the Iranians within Iran, but they are not that much concerned about Babak, or even Cyrus. They have far more urgent matters to attend to, for their families especially.
Anyway, regarding your question, whether Babak is yours too! Do you have a son named Babak? In case you do the answer is YES, but in case you don't, the answer is NO ;)
They trample Iranians' rights WITHIN Iran TODAY, and so many Iranians talk about how great Babak was, or Cyrus was etc! By the way, Babak could not have been an ETHNIC-PERSIAN because those areas were populated by MEDES, or maybe some other groups, not Persians, at that time. But in case we call all the citizens of the pre-Islamic Persian Empire as Persians then he was a Persian.

Jahanshah Rashidian

No pride for Persianism

by Jahanshah Rashidian on

Nobody can logically convince our oppressed compatriots that their today's ills with the IRI and tomorrow's problems of a free Iran with economical, technological, social, and political institutions can be solved by knowing and following the history. This exaggerated weight that some natinalists give to "pre-Islamic" history seems a mask covering the today's realities. It goes so far that it can create a cult, a cult of Persianism.

This Persianism  with implicite preferences for concepts like “Persian, Aryan, Anti arab, glory and other pompous fables should not be a replacement for the rejected “cult” of Islam.

As said, I am a pragmatic patriotic, but not a fanatical and blind nationalist, I appreciate those who like history, as their own interest, but I cannot charge poeple's  patriotism with a "forced" pride of "Persian" history.

Since I live in Germany and know the German recent history, I am not convinced with a nationalistic model of state for Iran after the fall of the IRI.

Nationalism is based on a collective selfishness, this is charged with hollow emotions and will not unconditionally respect human dignity, democracy, and in our multi national country, solidarity of our whole nation. It creates an atmosphere of hatred and paranoia against non-Aryans, non-Persian, non-nationalists, and…, as it happened in Germany, between 1933-45.

Let’s firstly acknowledge that I am not really good at Iranian history, especially, not fascinated by “Persian” history, sorry! However, I do not regard this “negligence” as a feeble for my Iranian identity, or even a lack of competence.

For me, the best model patterns can be the carriers of pragmatic ideas, from any time and any source, solving both our tangible problems with the IRI and giving a guarantee for progress and democracy of our future generations.

Study of history and glorification of the past events and kings remains a free subject of study for those who like, but should not become in a free Iran like today's imposed lessons of Coran or Arabic.

Many of our multi ethnic people, modern, leftist, and patriotic intellectuals have no interest to bow to the dominant philosophy and lessons of such a Persianism. The “Persian” was only a name given to an empire that ruled the country—just like their previous Medes.

The Persian Empire dominated Mesopotamia from 612-330 BC. The Achaemenid Persians of central Iran ruled an empire which comprised Iran, Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, and parts of Asia Minor and India and many parts of today's Middel-East and Central Asia. What is the milestone of being a part of this proud empire?

The word "Persian" and its nationalistic repercussions do not describe Today's Iran. It is rather a symbolic word that comes from the province of Fars where Persepolis is, and it is a symbol of Persian Empire. Today, Persian as an entity has no sense; it  neither can genetically prove the purity of Aryan race of even this little part of Iran, Fars, nor geographical define the borders of today's Iran.

Finally, those who live in the West must know that any far right ideolohy call their people "Aryans". This term "Arayns" can be used  from tall, blound, and white racists to some dark skin "pour" Iranians--damn effects of climate--! The term is now merely a racist use, and today in Germany, a sign of absurdity.

Separatists Should Take a Look at Themselves

by Amoo (not verified) on

Thank you Dr. Nooriala. This is a wonderful article. Azari separatists do not hate Iran, they hate themselves. It is their hate for themselves that leads to their current actions. A prime example of these people is Mr. Rashidian who is an MKO member. This guy hates Iran so much that he and his brothers joined Saddam Hussein. Mr. Rashidian and his Mojahed brothers have shown that there is not limit to how low a person can go.
These Azari separatists never point to the following: (1) during the last 700 years Iran has been rules by Azaris for 500 years of that. I know of no Persian who ever said a word about this. (2) It was an Azari government (the Ghaajaars) that lost half of Iran and took Iran to its lowest point in its history. I have never seen an Azari to apologize for their actions. I also know of no Persian who blamed Azaris for this. (3) The highest official in Iran (Mr. Khamenei) is an Azari. Again, no Persian has ever said a word.
I wish these Azari separatists had enough courage to take a look at themselves, rather that blaming Persians for the low opinion of themselves. Lastly, if these Azari separatists want to leave Iran they should pack and leave. No one should stop them. The great land of Azarabadegan has belonged to Iran for over 3000 years and will be a for ever a part of Iran. We kiss the hand and feet of those true Azaris (Babak Khoramdin type) who defend their mother land with their other Iranian brothers and sisters.

Rashidian and Madadi

by Face it (not verified) on

I think you miss the point, and keep repeating your position that we must forget the past before we can look to the future. We need to understand, discuss, and dissect our history on a continuous basis. Don't you see that the name of Thomas Jefferson, really a slave owner, is brought up in media on a daily basis with pride for his contribution to american constitution; why? Remember the saying that those who do not learn from their past mistakes are doomed to repeat it. It is said that even Thomas Jefferson had two copies of Xenophon's "Education of Cyrus", one in English and another in Latin or Greek (I don't recall which one), and based some of the progressive ideas of the american constitution on what he learned from Cyrus. Our 2500-year history teaches us so many lessons. Had the previous regime allowed a much more objective review of our history, maybe we would not be in this mess. One reason for shah's prohibition may have been to not provoke the wolves in the sheep's clothes -- the mullas. But we should have known them better before the revolution, based on historical evidence. Without making this too long and too boring, let me list a few things that we should take to the heart from our history: (1) Iran has always been a multi-ethnic country from day one and it has always been natural for iranians to cherish parallel cultures, so persian-ness will not cause us any problem if we take the historical context into account. (2) despite the short-comings of iranian kings, no iranian king has been as brutal to iranians as Emam was. (3) we should have known what Omar and other Caliphs did to iranians under the name of islam; we should have known why Khayyam despised mullas in so many of his poems; we should have known why Hafez longed for the good old days because of the atrocities of religious rulers of his time; had we known all of that more clearly, maybe we would have thought twice before 98% of us voted for islamic republic and handed over our country to a bunch of mullas from Qom, Karbala, and Najaf. (4) If we remember that Cyrus was half Kurd (Mede), that Cyrus freed jews, that Cyrus refused to take the very beautiful Panthea, the wife of a defeated king, as his lover or wife, that Xerxes had a jewish wife, that Khosrow had an armenian lover and wife (shirin); that so many iranian kings of Turkic origin fought for independence of iran; that farsi was the official language of Ottoman empire as well as Mongol India; we would value the multi-cultural nature of iran and would embrace it rather than trying to either defeat it or rip it apart into pieces. (5) Iran has been sustainably stronger when it treated its citizens fairly and when it was best at science and technology of its time. This is not well understood, but there are so much evidence, some as old as 2000 years to support this. And there are so many other lessons that if we knew by heart maybe we would not be in this mess now. So, you should not be offended by persian nationalism, as an integral part of that nationalism is embracing of all iranians, and even other cultures, unlike IR. Some of these historical figures were wiser and far more moral some 2500 years ago than any mulla of today, or even most of the democratically-elected leaders of today. Don't you think we should know about them, take pride in them, and follow their tradition rather than ideologies, religious or otherwise, with no proven record of success, at least as a consideration for our future endeavor.

There is an important missing point in your articles:

You do not focus on the future, but on the past. As a pure historian, it is OK! But as an analysist of present Iran, which is deeply in political crises, it seems incohrent and irresponsible.

What people need is to get rid of a regime which is a trash of 1400-year-primitive history. Then, they need a regime for leading them to join the advanced world, not to an illusionary word of the "glorious" ages of ancient Persian.

This word "Persian" looks combative as long as it stands against imposed Islamism, but in a free Iran from Islamism, it can create new problems to adjust the country with democracy and progress.
