The rise of Educated Iranians and the demise of Emulation
by alborz
06-May-2009

The principle of Emulation or taqlid (تقلید ) is deep rooted in Shi’ism and is linked to the question of who will lead the Shi’ites in the absence of the hidden Imam.  A Shi’ite believer is expected to choose a Source of Emulation (مرجع تقلید ) to whom life’s questions and decisions would be referred to and that their response would be followed without question.

The relationship between the emulator (moqaled) and emulated (moqalad), it is illustrative to consider the root of the word taqlid which is qaladeh (قلاده ) , which means a collar that is placed around the neck !

'Education' is known to have several root words, but the one that has broad acceptance is that it originated from the Latin word "educare," which means to nourish, to rear, to bring up.  The Persian for education conveys the same meaning with the use of two words which literally means ‘train and develop’ ( آموزش و پرورش ).

Whereas the intent of education is to grant independence in thought, analysis and deduction, emulation represents the exact opposite by granting broad and absolute decision making power to a select group of clergymen or mujtahids (مجتهد ).

Is it conceivable that the increasingly educated class within Iran can adhere to this fundamental principle of emulation in Shi’ism, and consequently relinquish their ability to think, analyze, deduce and act based on their own knowledge, information and skills that has been acquired based on life’s experience or academic training?  Is not the choicest fruits of education, precisely the acquisition and exercise of these abilities?

Can the irreconcilable and evident divide between those that have chosen not to wear the collar and those that have, be the cause of an ever deepening rupture in Iranian society?

Does this not explain why an increasing number of Iranians do not consider themselves as Moslems, and yet may make such a declaration in public primarily out of fear of the socio-economic consequences as well as the Islamic law dealing with apostasy or ertedad (ارتداد )?

Iranian society’s uncanny ability to live with contradictions combined with its fear of the existing order of governance by jurisprudence (velayat faghih), may slow the pace of change but cannot possibly alter its course.

The Bahá’í Conspiracy Theory

by LalehGillani on

Reza 41: It is indeed the Ulama who are responsible for the darkness engulfing our nation. The Bahá’í believers are being persecuted because in Islam non-believers are najis, and the punishment for denouncing Islam is death. Both Sunni and Shi'a Islamic jurisprudence agree that “a sane adult male apostate must be executed.”

The appropriate method of death for an apostate is beheading. Additionally, all schools of Islamic jurisprudence confer that a Muslim may kill an apostate without fear of punishment.

Iranians don’t need the Bahá’í religion to tell them what is going on in our country. There is no Bahá’í conspiracy going on. The Ulama themselves single handedly are doing a fine job of teaching the young and the old alike what Islam is about.

Ultimately, the Iranian society as a whole is questioning the legitimacy of any religion to rule over the state and the affairs of its citizens. Shi'a religion with its political ambitions and goals is a dying creed not because of a Bahá’í conspiracy but because of thirty years of mass murders, thievery, corruption, oppression, and plain cruelty of the Ulama and their followers.

Inconsistency, Inconsistencies, Inconsistencies…

by LalehGillani on

Reza 41: Yes, there is no mention of stoning in Quran, but Muslim scholars cite various Hadith for this practice. According to these narratives, the Prophet Mohammad prescribed stoning as an appropriate punishment for Jews guilty of adultery. After his death, Muslim leaders used the precedent set by the Prophet to codify the Islamic law (Shariah).

As a result, adultery became one of the six crimes for which fixed punishment is pre determined. Even in the 21st century, the practice of stoning women continues by various Muslim communities.

Inconsistencies between the teachings of Quran and Shariah are for Muslim scholars to sort out. The rest of us are only victims of these inconsistencies. We are trapped in Muslim societies run by thugs empowered by Shariah.

Dear Laleh, it has always been the hostility of a vocal few !

by alborz on

The unfettered investigation of truth is an individual responsibility in this Faith.  As with any investigation, the hardest task is the abandonment of bias and the desire to seek validation by confirming information.  Yet we know that validation is only accomplished when disconfirming evidence is not found or present.

Those that choose to attack the Faith, access to information, does not in any way compensate for the their bias nor their inability to apply a consistent approach to what they perceive as “understanding”.   Their fear today is greater today than any other time, because the response of the Baha’i communities they attack has been steadfastness in their principles.  Far from claiming to be perfect and without fault, the adherents of this Faith recognize that each are on a journey of spiritual development, with no one person, ever considering themselves to be superior or more qualified in any regard.

This is one reason why "amre be maroof va nahy az monker" is abolished in this Faith.

Finally, the blind, baseless and maniacal attacks have never led to the abandonment of the love and devotion of the Baha’is for the people of Iran.  The land of Iran is the spiritual cradle of this Faith and under great adversity and limitations, they continue to serve where they have an impact.

Enjoy your journey in the ocean of His Writings.

Reza 41: Thank you for your response to my post. As I mentioned in my previous comment, I feel neither qualified nor comfortable to debate over the beliefs of the Bahá’í faith. Perhaps in the future, we can discuss this issue further.

Regarding Quaran and its directive to a Muslim to seek the opinion of the “well-read” on matters not clear to him or her: In practice, this has become precisely the root of the problem. Islamic jurisprudence has time and again ruled to spread injustice and horrors against women and non-believers. Rulers have relied on Islamic jurisprudence to legitimize beheading, flocking, stoning, amputation of hands and arms, and mass murders.

Recently, a Muslim on another thread wrote that the victims of the mass executions conducted by IRI were not “people.” How do you think he has reached such a brilliant conclusion? It has come from the Velayat Faghih who claims direct blood connection to the Ahlel Bayt.

These Muslim scholars have been instrumental in every oppression imposed by thugs and tyrants dishing out Islamic justice in the name of Allah.

Thirsty for Knowledge…

by LalehGillani on

Dear Alborz: Thank you for the links. I am thirsty for this knowledge. Lately, I have realized how little I know about the Bahá’í faith. Curiously I have also observed that the Bahá’í religion is under fire from many fronts. Although there are a few obvious reasons for the IRI to fear the Bahá’í believers, I still don’t fully grasp the reason for the hostility of others…

I am missing something profoundly concealed… I’ll have to find out for myself…

leila khanoom jan,

by Reza 41 on

Quran 33:33

by LalehGillani on

“And Allah wishes only to remove all abomination from you, you Ahlel Bayt, and to make you pure and spotless.” (Quran, 33:33)

Reza 41: The concept of infallibility of the Prophet Mohammad, Imam Ali, Fatima, Imam Hasan, Imam Hussain, and the other nine Imams of Shi'a is derived mainly from Sura 33:33 together with the Hadith of the Cloak.

I realize that the notion of infallibility of a few selected human beings might be in contradiction with other verses in Quran as quoted by you. The holy book itself is full of inconsistencies.

As for the Bahá’í religion and its interpretation of infallibility, I must respectfully bow out of the discussion. I know very little about the Bahá’í faith. (After hanging around iranian.com for over 7 months now, I have grown curious and must devote some time to learn about them…)

When you "record" the comment and time of posting of your comments in "the event of deletion by the Baha'i-lackey censor of this site", what happens when the Bahai lackey actually deletes your comment?  What do you do with the record that you have kept?  Do you sue?  Do you publish them in a book?  If so, can we buy the book and avail ourselves of the priceless wisdom in those comments?  Is the book available on Amazon.com?

Dear Princess - Absolute

by alborz on

Thank you for clarifying your earlier point.  The distinction that you raise between religion and education requires context.  But before I respond,  I need to be sure that in this instance by "education" you actually mean knowledge and not the process by which it is acquired, or education.  Assuming that this is what you meant then I would like to share these thoughts with you.

As all religions have both spiritual and social teachings, then the question that arises is to which part are we addressing this distinction between knowledge and religion.  In my experience, when I have encountered those that claim religiousity but don't have a firm footing on their beliefs, they are more susceptible to invoking the "absolute" so as to discourage questioning and independent thinking.  Would you not agree that fundamentalism and fanaticism are born out of the fear that questions can lead to the weakening of faith?  Those that nourish their faith through "conscious knowledge" and its application in daily life, do not need to dwell on absolutes which if violated will lead to externally enforced consequences.  In this age of maturity, I believe that we are responsible to ourselves and no marjae or source.  Due to the exigencies of their time, past religious traditions have relied on intermediaries such as clerics and mujtahids to not only define but also to judge.  The only voice of authority is an internal one that harkens us to a path that is worthy of our station as human beings.  For this voice to be heard, we need to seek and to understand through the skills acquired through education.

Since you and I share the same definition for faith, then perhaps is it possible that we share the same definition for religion.  That religion is so laden with negative and unfortunately destructive connotations that let me just say that I too agree that it is best to now have a religion as we know it.  So to this extent, we share the same views.

Yet, I do believe that humanity has benefitted from the spiritual and social teachings of a divine educator when it has been appropriate with the time and age in the evolution of mankind.  In this day and age when science is an integral part of human society, how can humanity be expected to abandon the scientific method when it pertains to the spiritual nature of man.  While an answer may not be found to every spiritual question, this does not make the methodology invalid in its application.

The agreement between science and religion is an essential element of my belief and in this context relativity is equally applicable to religious belief as it is to scientific theories.  It is therefore my challenge and obligation to seek and question without pride or prejudice.  What may be absolutely ambiguous to me today may indeed become absolutely clear tomorrow.  This change is entirely linked to me and my ability to percieve and not that which I need to understand.  Again, it is my belief that this is my responsibility.

While you and I have different starting points for the beliefs we share, how these beliefs influence our lives and our individual growth, collectively it defines the societies to which we belong.  For this reason, I concluded that education will have a defining role in shaping the future of Iranian society.  In an earlier blog, I remarked that educated girls represent our hope for the future of Iran.

As always, your thoughtful remarks are appreciated.

All the best,

Alborz

Dear lalleh Gilani , for you and all to know, listening to religious leader decree, and  have no question ask  actually is practiced in Baha'i believe and  not in Islam, GOD ordered us any thing we dont understand ,we can not follow

are you  talking about infallibility? there is no Marjaa you find in Islam(shia)that acclaim he or she are infallible, But if you ask Mr. Alborz if he believe that 9 member of UHJ(united house of justice)located in Haifa Israel are infallible ? he would not deny that, as matter a fact who Denys such, they would be ousted from the faith as  covenant breakers, Mr, Albourz after reading  many lengthily comments explaining that taghlid is not what he interpreter and is not there because 12 imam is clandestine,is there because Quran has ordered us to ask IF we don't know.

that is all in contingency of IF we don't know, but he would never come to understand this because, that is foundation of his complete belief and Bahai belief اصول الدین, if he come to any other conclusion, that is wrong to them, therefor no matter what , he has to belive that what taghlid means.

here Mr. alborz intention  :

he wrote :"For this reason alone, is it too remote a possibility that an educated person, such as yourself, be equipped to seek and to understand without the interpretation of clergy or the edict of a source of emulation?  I see this as one of many divides that has emerged in our society. "

that means again after all the explanation, showing all Quranic reference ,he still like to insinuate, his belief notion version of "taghlid" and he think interpretation of clergy is edict, he doesnt come to realize , we ask them we go after them for our question, they dont dictate us any things,

as I said it doesnt matter how logical he sound like and how they approach, they do not takes any ones logic, these are the example of "they know the truth but they would purpesly cover it" , they manipulate the fact , and they want to play with word of GOD, there is a saying :

When the issues become uncomfortable, the Baha'is on this site delete comments because they are incapable of answering them. They also take on other identities and create aliases, and then accuse other people of doing it.

These two links are to two articles by Juan Cole that evidence the total hollowness and vacuous hypocrisy of FaryarM/Alborz's sentiments on this blog.

A New Reconciliation

by LalehGillani on

Alavi Institute, a prominent Shi'a school, has opted for a completely different approach to reconcile the conflict between religious beliefs and scientific knowledge.

First, young, intelligent students with strong religious families are hand selected during a vigorous vetting process. Once admitted, these students are expected to handle not only intense religious studies but also advance math and science subjects.

As a result, with the combination of an unshakable religious core and scientific knowledge, this breed of intellectuals is equipped to serve the velayat faghih and fend off diversions into possible “contradictions.”

Although this model hasn’t yet been duplicated on a large scale, it is the wave of the future in the Islamic Republic.

The irony is that the same Alavi Institute has also bred rebellious souls such as علي اصغر منتظرحقيقي and محمود شامخي.

Both of these individuals became the core members of Mujahideen-e Khalq who rejected velayat faghih.

Absolute

Dear Alborz,

Thank you for taking the time to elaborate. The more I read your point of view on this, the more I realise, that in principle yours and mine are rather similar in this respect; it's just that you have formed yours within a religious framework and I have formed mine outside one.

As for the point I raised about the problem with 'marga-e taghlid', what I was getting at was the issue of the 'Absolute' which is prevalent in all religious faiths. I believe, the fact that a 'marga-e taghlid' claims to be interpreting the 'laws' of an Absolute is the core of the problem. And that is why I believe the issue is not resricted to Shi'ism. (Although I do get your specific point about Shi'ism). The differnce between religious faith and education lies partly in the fact that in education even someone like Enstein can be questioned, but in religious faith, it doesn't matter how open to questions and discussions it might be, one hits a point where one is required to have faith in an Absolute. That is the point I was trying to raise when I said the problem lies not in the taghlid, but in the percieved authority of the source of taghlid.

Finally, my defintion of Faith was  taken from Meriam-Webster and is what I understand religious faith, in general, to be. I do however, realise that every indivdual has the right to define their faith in such a way they can live with. As a spiritual person, I happen to share your definition of faith, but I wonder if you really need religion for that. (Rhetorical!)

In any case, as usual  it's a pleasure to read your views. I am sorry if I do not manage to fully participate in this debate. I am a bit busy catching up with work as I just got back from holidays.

I found your blog very thought-provoking and could not resist making a comment, despite knowing that if I start I would probably be spending more time on the thread than I can afford to at the moment. So if I do not manage to post further comments, please do not take it personally.

Thanks again for your thoughtful response.

Be well,

Princess

Dear Monda,

by alborz on

Your points are well taken and it is precisely the changes that you point to in society, that consists of higher education, more ready access to information, and greater independence in thought that has accelerated the divide in our society.

If you know of other faiths that have similar mechanisms for leading the masses as "sources of emulation", I would be interested to know also.  But to the extent that I am aware of, this is a unique aspect of Shi'ism that serves to fill the void created by the absence of the Hidden Imam.

I also recommend that you read the most recent comment by Laleh Gillani.  She succinctly summarizes the original purpose of the blog.

Thanks,

Alborz

Capt_Ayhab Jan, this is indeed a delightful exchange !

by alborz on

In reading your comment, I am in complete agreement with the definitions you have provided for education and knowledge and if I  have implied anything other than that, I simply ask that you attribute it to my imprecision in expression.  I humbly accept your clarification.

In an earlier exchange with Princess, I expressed my belief in faith as "first conscious knowledge and second the practice of good deeds".   It is that first component of "conscious knowledge" and later its expression in "good deeds" that for me defines faith in its most exhalted form.  If I were to accept the prevailing definition as "something for which there is no proof", then I would be able to also follow your logic and face the "paradox" you have so eloquently described.  But, alas, I don't share the same definition.

As you have said, education leads to the acquisition of knowledge and skills which ultimately are made manifest in our attributes.  For this reason alone, is it too remote a possibility that an educated person, such as yourself, be equipped to seek and to understand without the interpretation of clergy or the edict of a source of emulation?  I see this as one of many divides that has emerged in our society.  Do you not agree that we have become so adept at living with such contradictions that we no longer know where we stand?

Also, I am not sure where I may have implied that education would be able to prove the existence of faith.  If anything, education provides me with the required tools by which I can seek and arrive at faith, if my journey is free from bias, ego and attachment to self.  This may indeed be the biggest "if" for our society.

Again, thank you for providing me with much material to ponder on.
