I immigrated to the US well before the so-called “Iranian Revolution of 1979”. I always thought I had one leg up ahead of those Iranians that “had to run away” from the tyranny of the Ayatollahs -- to anywhere, including the US. Being born in Tehran, I watched the flock of Iranians from Khorassan, Ahvaz, Esfehan, Yazd, Kerman and Shiraz to the US - you know – the ones we used to call Daahaati – if you were born and raised in Tehran.
I used to shun those Daahaatis immigrating from Iran in the aftermath of post-1979, thinking “what are they doing here”? Very similar to upper-class people in Sarasota, Florida, seeing some newly arrived black people in their neighborhood, and whispering to each other “what are they doing here?”.
Meanwhile, I had become employed by a fortune-100 US company well before 1979. Boy – did I have a good pension plan and medical insurance with that fortune-100 company. I used to laugh at the deal offered by the Khomeini government to Iranian civil workers as their little earnings were being dwindled and deflated from 7 Tomans per dollar too 700 Tomans per dollar.
I was feeling great until the 1990s when most US Corporations stopped having Pension Plans and introduced 401K plans – in other words – you pay for your own pension – not the corporation. Furthermore, they introduced a 5-year vesting plan – meaning that you had to stay with the company to even get vested in the 401k plan. Meanwhile, I noticed they kept on laying-off workers that were not working beyond 40-hours a week at no extra pay. In other words, you had to be the slave of the US Corporations – or else—you would be laid-off – and no transportation of your 3-4 years of pension from one employer to the next.
As it happened during the past 30 years, I ended up working for US companies that either went bankrupt, or they laid-off people, just before they could get vested in the pension plans. In the same time – the same Corporations started cutting down on medical benefits, making the employees pay for medical insurance premiums.
Now in 2007 when I see those vry Daahaatis from Iran who escaped the Mullahs’ tyranny, and came here with a few dollars – they got themselves into second hand car dealership or real estate dealings and wheeling – and they are doing fine, better than me with my advanced degrees from the west and placing my faith in the “American Corporations”.
There are over dozen countries in the world that offer their senior citizens a retirement with dignity, no matter what their seniors did for the past 40 years living in those countries. Those countries include Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, etc -- all civilized and developed countries.
My advice to anyone contemplating immigration to the US is: DON’T. If you have the choice to immigrate to more civilized countries, do so. You don’t want to immigrate to the US, unless you want to become a shitty dealer-wheeler in cars and real-estate, someone who fucks and abuses the workers, or an outright lawyer/mafia/politician..
If you want to maintain your dignity and integrity at age 65 and beyond, don’t immigrate to the US.

You freakin people make me sick. Just because you could not make in this country, dont be bashing the people who did. You freaks who thought if you are not from teharan, you are from another planet, are no different than the freakin racists who live in this country. And by the way, those people who you call daahati and sell used cars and real estate, are the hard working people who deserve whatever they have. And if you and people like you dont like this country, then get the fuck OUT. LOOSERS.

Please note that this U.S love-hate disorder these leftists are infected with have damaged their ability to think clearly. They can't get enough of U.S, and at the sametime they can't stop bashing it. Till today, even on this site, after posing infinite # of questions to these leftists on why they all immigrated to the "uncivilized, Iran hating, worker opressing, human rights violator" nation of U.S, till today, I have not been able to get a reasonbale answer, and in most cases, I didn't get an aswer at all! Because this question touches the nerve of their argument ! These guys don't have a problem with U.S policy towards Iran only as they claim, they use twisted logic, fabricated statistics, character assasination and personal attacks to bash the U.S at every level. Just look at thi site, its called Iranain.com, and at a time which is considered one of the most crucial in our history, even according to their own admittion, they have absolutely neglected the brutal opression of our people in Iran by the IRI on daily basis and are engaged in U.S bashing at all levels, including Americans' daily habbits such as eating and sexual relations, ,,,,!!!! And now mr Joe here is advising people not to migrate to a country that hosts 35 out of 200 million immigrants in the world !! And millions have always and still are going through huge difficulties and sacrifices just to make it here ! Just sad what have these people become.

Shame on you who self-proclaim yourself to be intellectual and help to destroy a nation by supporting fanatics and extremists. You think by just reading Marx manifesto or participating in a few MKO meetings you have found the truth. Think again “bro”…
Why didn’t I see any mention of Japanese, Russian, Italian, French, … in your distorted argument. Keep on talking about Chinese and Indians. In 10 more years you won’t have them to kick around in your babbling neither.
I bet you are not even living in the US. You are one of those sore losers who couldn’t get the visa to come here.
For the benefit of those who may be glancing at this exchange, my intent is not to defend US as the perfect society and justify every action by every administration. There are plenty of room for criticism and improvement but, in my opinion, the fundamentals and foundations for a free and democratic society is as strong or stronger here than any other corner of the world.

I have dehati friends from other nationalities as well. Look at the prfile of the managing partner of the follwoing link:

Forget about BMW, he flies his own gulf stream V550 private jet. But he grew up on "hand me down" clothes (his own words) in his village in South East Asia. Each year, he donates millions to charity.

I promise I’ll be good, work hard and smart just they way your fellow americans have done. Just show me a free land with untouched resources, and I’ll promise to commit to a thorough and complete genocide of its native people and steal land from neighboring countries and if they resist I‘ll take it from them by force, then I’ll bring slaves from around the world to work for nothing and once the opportunity arises I’ll extend this slavery to far away lands like china and India and claim my rights to the oil that those middle east savages stole from me and hid it underneath their land. I’ll also fuck up their countries so their educated brains would come here and become my classy slaves, only they wouldn’t know it since I’ll throw a bony in front of them every once awhile. How is that? Is that working enough hard and smart for you? Just show me that promise land, I’ll take care of the rest with davood, javad and bache khaza. luv u all, it's been fun.

Now all he does is sit and cry.
America’s cold, it’s harsh and mean,
Enough to drive poor Joe to scream.
“Don’t come here-don’t immigrate”
“Stay in Iran and suffocate.”
What Joe forgets and doesn’t say,
He wasn’t forced to come or stay.
Now that he’s lost his pension & his perks,
He claims America is full of jerks.
Next time Joe, stay where you are,
Happiness comes from within, not from afar.

You are dehati no matter what you do or where you graduate from, let it be Stanford, Harvard, MIT … DehatiNESS is engraved in your brain and personality all throughout your childhood, teenagehood and beyond long before you get to that prestigious school abroad and then make a buck or two and finally realize that long dream and finance a BMW or Mercedes. Anyway they only let you in there since you are an “intellectual mule”, there is no difference between you and those Chinese house boys who built the railroad in last century, only the appearance of work has changed. They built them the railroads, you are building them the information superhighways and push the bits around, that’s all. Now go drive that BMW and brag to ham velayatiya in javadabad a little more.

You are probably a teenager now, but, when you grow up you will write responses after understanding the points. Get out of your "left-wing" shell and try to read carefully and understand before trying to be cute.
Listen carefully, the discussion is about those who knowingly "choose" to immigrate to US. No one has put a chain around their neck to bring them here. If they choose to (as their best alternative) work minimum wage or work 24/7 as intellect mule (as you put it), it is their choice. They have no right to bitch and moan. Everyone has the right to criticize and opine ideas for improvement. However, that doesn't mean constantly whining and subscribing to conspiracy theory.
If you came here for a free lunch and you are not getting it, quit whining, work harder and smarter. If you can't do it, you will be working minimum wage, or sleeping on the pavement anywhere in the world you go.
Grow up...

emigrate-to leave a place (as a country) to settle else where
immigrate-to come into a foreign country and take up residence.
Normally when people use immigrate they tend to use it in reference to someone already in the country and Curious Joe is trying to warn people outside the US to not come to the US. They would be more likely, categorized as to "emigrate".

I do not understand why he uses the term dehati. It does not add anything to the article than the ignorance and lack of self esteem of the writer.
The sallories given in US is dream sallories compared to Europe. The taxes are also much less. So instead of crying about American companies giving less to you "tehranis" you could start using your high sallory for paying insurances privately. Instead of a hich end BMW or Mercedes drive somethig like a VW or Toyota like european Eng. You will still have more money than both Tehranis and Dehatis in Europe and knowing that would keep you satisfied.
To people commenting that he should move out if he does not like the place. Grow up. A person could be critical about the situations of a place he lives at. If the America is even 10% as good as you say then it should accept criticism.

I mean all this opportunity us of ehh is giving us, doesn’t matter if you are a minimum wage hamburger flipper or an “intellectual mule” in silicon valley, please stop, we can not take it anymore, we are not worthy of this heavenly kindness. We are just bunch of ungrateful parasites trying to get a free ride here the way we have always done. We nag and complain and ask for equal rights, Why can’t we be like those good, grateful immigrants like Mexicans, Indian or Chinese who work 24/7 with no complaints like good slaves from washing toilets to think for you so you won’t have to do hard work or learn science or math and then apparently we go further than just complaining and do even worse, stage a coup to overthrow your democratic government, steal your oil, and stick a islamo-fascist regime up your ass just for the heck of it. Yeah, suck on this man.

Most Mexicans immigrating to us are from very low class in that country. Final Response to Comments
by Curious Joe on Mon Dec 03, 2007 12:41 AM PSTIt is surprising to see almost 80 comments to the article. Since this post is going to die by tomorrow, as new posts are introduced, I’d like to close the debate by my final response, clarifying and clearing any possible misunderstanding about what I was driving at – which was: The dire state of financial security for the elderly in the US, compared to several other countries. As a 65 year old person, passing-on the benefit (if any) of my life experience, I was merely trying to give a heads-up to younger people in their 20s and 30s -- as to what they could expect in the US after working for a company (or companies) for 35 years, versus what they could get in some other countries. I had no other agenda in the article.
Unintentionally, I must have touched a nerve by using the word “ Dahati”, even though I apologized for doing so in my earlier comment. Please read my article again, and note that my reference to “Dahatis” was in the pre-1979 era. Almost 30 years has passed since then. The world has changed, and so have I. With the advent of the TV, portable radios, cell phones and Internet, there is no longer any Dehat or Dahatis. In 2007, even the Parisians have no longer a “superior aura” towards their French brethrens in the provinces. In fact, most of the chic Parisians now have their vacation homes in quaint small villages, just like today’s rich Tehroonis, who have their 2nd homes in outlying areas of Iran – in the old Dahati-land. That is considered shick in 2008.
Now that we have cleared that issue, let’s get down to some bare facts in answer to some of the more relevant comments:
1- According to //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Household_income_in_the_United_States , only 19% of the households in the US have annual income over $100,000 per year. Forgetting about the other 81% (Dahatis?!), let’s concentrate on the clever Iranians who immigrated to the US and are among the 19% (non-Dahatis?) – (Note that the population of the US is over $300 million. Therefore, over 240 million of them are already in bad shape, as they are among the 81%)
2- Let’s look at a typical annual budget of a household with a $110,000 annual income in the US (both parents working for US companies):
Mortgage/Rent/Real Estate Tax/Assoc Fee, etc. $24,000
Utilities (phones, Internet, Cable TV, Garbage, etc.) 3,000
Car payments/Gas/Transportation Expenses 6,000
Insurance (Fire, Flood, Health, Life, Earthquake, etc) 3,000
Food (@ 1,000 per month) 12,000
Children Schooling/College/Debt Payments 12,000
Clothing 2,000
Restaurants/Entertainment 2,000
Annual Vacation with kids 2,000
Federal Tax 12,000
State/City Tax 3,000
Social Security 7,000
Medicare Tax 2,000
Savings (IRA, 401K, etc) 20,000
Total: $110,000
3- With the above situation in the US (a frugal living within the Persian taste), the couple finally reach the age of 65. The Children are gone (hopefully), and the couple need to retire, either due to illness/senility, or no more jobs due to age discrimination by the US corporations against hiring older people. Here is how their annual budget would look like:
Annual Income:
Social Security (Max $3,000 per month) $36,000
Withdrawals from IRA/401K savings ($1K/month) 10,000
Annual Expenses
Mortgage/Rent/Assoc Fee, etc 24,000
Utilities 2,000
Transportation 4,000
Insurance (including Long Term Care) 6,000
Food/Medicine 12,000
Clothing 1,000
Restaurant/Entertainment 0
Vacation 0
Federal Tax 6,000
State Tax 1,000
Saving 0
______
Total: $56,000
4- All I was trying to say is that you can work for 30-40 years for US companies at over 40 hours per week, and at the end, you cannot afford to retire. Whereas if you work for companies in countries such as France, not only you do not need to work more than 35 hours per week, but you can also retire with dignity, able to pay your bills and go to a restaurant once-in-a-while, or take a little vacation.
That’s all folks.
Your view is skewed
by kimia on Sun Dec 02, 2007 11:15 PM PSTDear Miserable,
Your view of people, life, work ...is totally skewed. I think 50cents comments say it all; but I need to speak up a bit.
1)Dahaati-Don't call non Tehranis Dahaati. If you want to think like that you and I are Dahaati compare to Parisians or Newyorkers. I personallly was born in Shiraz; my parents are from Tehran Am I half Dahaati also if you want to know Shiraz in 60 and 70s was a wonderful university community.
2)A persons value is their accomplishments and education. It does not matter where they are from they should be judged with what they accomplish. Look around there are som many immigrants in the US(probably mostly Dahaatis) but see what they accomplish.
It is 21st century for gods sake.
3)You did not grab the opportunity. your bad. You should have been smarter.
4) For me..I am a professional from upper middle class; but I never look down upon people who are not tehranis or have gas station or work in real estate. I look at them as a human; individual as an immigrant with Iranian descent.
5)My advice: Take a long vacation and travel around the world. Try to go to villages and Dehats and be giving. You will get another perspective. Be generous, be kind, be loving.after all at the end no one will know and care about how many years you were in corporate America, We will all go to the same place (ma as khak miayim and be khak baz migardim)
Peace,
Kimia
3)
