US calling friends, allies on Iran sanctions

HONOLULU
– A top national security official says the United States is reaching
out to international partners in an effort to build support for a new
round of sanctions against Iran's regime.

National Security Council chief of staff Denis McDonough told reporters the administration will revisit its options against Iran in the new year and is gauging the views of U.S. friends and allies about "the next step in the process."

McDonough says both unilateral or United Nations sanctions
are options. Earlier in the day, Obama spoke about the flaring violence
in Tehran. He praised "the courage and the conviction of the Iranian
people" while condemning Iran's Islamic government for attacking
demonstrators with "the iron fist of brutality."

For us, standing on the outside and looking in, there are feelings of anguish and helplessness. The sympathies of almost all of us lie with those who, to borrow from the events of the 1960s in Czechoslovakia, would like to see a "Tehran spring"; an Islamic regime, perhaps, but with a more human face.

جمهوري اسلامي هرچه در توان دارد بسيج كرده تا مردم
را شكست بدهد. اما نمي تواند. شگفت نيست؟ رژيمي كه
تا همين سال گذشته آن چنان قدرقدرت مي نمود كه قدرت هاي بزرگ امپرياليستي را وادار كرده بود كه نقش خرده امپرياليستي جمهوري اسلامي در منطقه را بپذيرند، رژيمي كه تمام تحركات و فعاليت هاي سياسي، صنفي، و حتي فرهنگي مخالفان خود را به شدت زير مراقبت داشت و كوچكترين صداي مخالفي را خاموش مي كرد، نظامي كه با جيب هاي سرشار از پول نفت تمام جامعه را وابسته به خود نموده بود، در زماني چنين فشرده و باورنكردني در وضعيتي قرار گرفته است كه روند سرنگوني سريع آن اغلب تحليلگران را دچار آشفتگي در تحليل و آسيمگي در رهنمود ساخته است.

چرا جمهوري اسلامي با شليك مستقيم گلوله به سر و سينه ي معترضين قادر به خاموش كردن جنبش نيست؟ چرا جمهوري اسلامي با دستگيري تقريبا تمام فعالين سياسي شناخته شده، تمام دانشجويان پيشرو، تمام فعالين جنبش هاي اجتماعي باز قادر نشده است جنبش مردمي را از حركت بازبياندازد؟ چرا به رغم صرف ميليونها دلار از ثروت اجتماعي در جهت جلوگيري از اطلاع رساني و گردش آزادانه اخبار و تحليل ها و افكار، مي تواند مردم را تسليم كند؟ چرا هرچه بيشتر به خيابان ها لشگركشي ميكند بيشتر خيابان ها را از دست مي دهد؟ چرا هرچه بيشتر افراد جامعه را به قتل مي رساند جمعيت هاي معترض بيشتري زاده مي شوند؟

چرا هر چه بيشتر روزنامه ها را تعطيل مي كند جريان ارتباطات و اطلاعات در جامعه متراكم تر مي شود؟ پاسخ به اين سئوالات مي تواند پرتويي نيز بر ماهيت جنبش كنوني بيافكند. جمهوري اسلامي در روبنا مبارزه مي كند. دستگير مي كند، تجاوز مي كند، مي كشد، مي بندد، تهديد مي كند و رجز مي خواند. اما جنبش كنوني ماحصل يك رويداد روبنايي نيست. قضيه اين نيست كه عده اي پيشروي جسور قدم به پيش نهاده اند و با كشتن آنها ختم به خير مي شود. داستان اين نيست كه جناحي دارد مردم را سازمان مي دهد و با دستگيري رهبران آن جناح همه چيز پايان مي يابد. مساله در سطح نيست. آن نيروي عظيمي كه اينك به تكان آمده در اعماق زيرين جامعه قرار دارد. اينكه زنان و دختران چنين بي مهابا در جبهه نخست مبارزه قرار دارند ربطي به انتخابات و اصلاح طلبي و پروژه هاي مخملين آمريكايي ندارد.

مبارزه براي رفع ستم جنسي ريشه در ساختارهاي نابرابر جنسيتي دارد كه بسيار ژرف تر از هر كشمكش جناحي، به دختران و زنان چنان نيرو و انگيزه اي مي دهد كه هيچ گلوله و زنداني را ياراي مقابله با جوشش آنها نيست. آن ساختارهاي ژرف بي عدالتي و تبعيضي كه بخش عمده ي نيروي كار شهري را همواره از مشاركت در تعيين سرنوشتشان محروم كرده، چنان در تاروپود جمهوري اسلامي درهم تنيده است كه هر چه موسوي ها و بهنودها و سحابي ها و رحماني ها در ضرورت حفظ نظام قلم فرسايي كنند، آنها كار خودشان را مي كنند و شعار خودشان را مي دهند و راستاي حركت خود را در جهت دگرگوني ريشه اي اين نظام دنبال مي كنند. زيرزمين هاي جامعه ايران را كمتر كسي كاوش كرده و آن را به تصوير كشيده است. چنين است كه سمت و سوي حركت مردم را نه حاكمان و نه تحليلگران كم مايه نمي توانند درك و فهم كنند. شما هر چه در روي زمين شهروندان را بكشيد، دسته هاي تازه اي شورمندانه از اين زيرزمين ها بيرون مي آيند. رفع تضادهاي زيرين اين جامعه از عهده رژيم خارج است. رفع تضادهاي زيرين تنها در عهده ي نظريه و كنش و سازمان بخش هاي بالنده اي از جامعه است كه قدرت گرفتن آنها با رفع تضادها معادل است.

Leading article: We must keep our counsel over Iran for the time being

What we do know, meanwhile, because the authorities have confirmed it, is that at least eight people died in a series of clashes in the capital and elsewhere, which erupted following the death of a prominent opposition cleric.

The official death toll is almost certainly a considerable understatement, which means the burgeoning pro-democracy movement in Iran already has a fairly lengthy roll call of martyrs.

Spilled blood is a powerful and energising symbol in any country. It is especially so in Iran, where there are strong memories of the police shootings that became the catalyst for the final push to overthrow the Shah.

The government knows this all too well – hence its relative restraint in using force to contain the protesters until now. The arrest yesterday of several aides to the opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi – whose nephew was among those shot dead on Sunday – may mark the beginning of a much tougher course in coming days. If the gloves come off, things could turn bloody indeed, for one factor that has really emerged in recent days is the mutual hatred that now exists between the regime and its disparate foes.

For us, standing on the outside and looking in, there are feelings of anguish and helplessness. The sympathies of almost all of us lie with those who, to borrow from the events of the 1960s in Czechoslovakia, would like to see a "Tehran spring"; an Islamic regime, perhaps, but with a more human face.

President Ahmadinejad, meanwhile, has forfeited his claims to legitimacy as head of state, having benefited from what everyone suspects was a falsified election result in June.

Now he clings on to his high office, decked out in the rags of ultra-nationalism and irresponsibly courting collision with the US and Israel with belligerent grandstanding over nuclear power and even more belligerent rhetoric about annihilating Israel. Posing as the great patriot, his claim to be defending his embattled country against a coalition of Zionists and imperialists is his only remaining card.

Guardian Editorial: Iran: Protest that refuses to die

It is fruitless to speculate whether a tipping point has been achieved by Iran's burgeoning opposition movement. But after the weekend's protest marches in which at least eight people and probably many more died, we do know that the movement is both exceptionally resilient and spreading. What started out as a loose-knit coalition of reformist groups led by defeated opposition candidates protesting rampant fraud in the presidential election is becoming bolder, more focused and angrier by the week. Many protesters on the streets of Tehran on Sunday did not even cover their faces in the videos uploaded to YouTube, as they did in the post-election protests six months ago. The crowds displayed great bravery, refusing to retreat under police baton charges and volleys of warning shots. The other feature of the internet clips was the scenes of policemen either being overwhelmed or giving up and walking away. The protest is also going national. Opposition websites reported clashes in Qom and seven other cities in central, northern and eastern Iran. None of this seems likely to melt away.
