"Mr. Ardeshir Edulji Reporter, who had been residing in Teheran for
nearly four decades as a representative from Bombay of the 'Society
for the improvement of the condition of the poor Zoroastrians of
Iran', informed me that the Zoroastrians of India are making a serious
mistake and their indifference is extremely harmful to the community.
Every year an increasing number of Zoroastrians is abandoning the
religion of their forefathers and [726] becoming Baha'is. Despite
repeated warnings the coreligionists of Bombay are not being alerted.

Even today Baha'is are organizing feasts on a grand scale and extending
a gracious invitation to our credulous Zoroastrians with the purpose
of attracting them to the Baha'i religion. With many such devices the
Zoroastrians are being converted. At this end the conversion of our
Iranian co-religionists is conducted chiefly in Bombay and Poona and
recently in Karachi. Destitute co-religionists coming from Iran are
immediately approached by converted Iranian-Zoroastrian Baha'is, are
employed in their shops, are helped in setting up separate shops of
their own, or are given employment in other ways and are later
converted to Baha'ism.

Due to our indifference and carelessness such Iranian Baha'is have, up
to date, blatantly and freely taken advantage of our communal schools,
hospitals, maternity homes, rest houses, sanatoriums, charitable
chawls, and innumerable such institutions and benefitted by our
various funds. Thousands of Iranian-Zoroastrians of Iran and India
have already been converted to Baha'ism and the number is ever on the
increase. The most distressing fact is that in our country it is not
the Muslim Baha'is who convert our co-religionists but our own one-time
Iranian-Zoroastrians themselves.

Since the last five years the community has become aware of this
calamity that is staring it in the face and the Trustees of the Parsi
Panchayat of Bombay and Karachi have published in the press that
henceforth the benefit of communal institutions and funds will not be
extended to these non-Zoroastrian Jooddin Baha'is.

In Karachi a recently converted Iranian youth repented his error and
honestly appealed to be taken back into the Zoroastrian religion. In
the [727] presence of an assembly of prominent people I performed the
Navjote ceremony of that youth. Similarly, constant efforts should be
made wherever possible to reinstate into their ancient faith converts
who have gone astray. "

Chapter LXVIII

THE NAVJOTE OF A CONVERTED ZOROASTRIAN Baha'i

With the downfall of the Sasanian Empire our vast population suffered
all kinds of attacks and has now dwindled to a mere hundred and twenty
five thousand. The major portion of the present Muslim population of
Iran comprises of converted Zoroastrians. Conversion into Islam has,
to a large extent, ceased since the last hundred years. Instead, since
about seventy-five years, a similar threat has arisen from an entirely
different direction. Every year, in Iran, as well as in India, an
increasing number of Iranian co-religionists are being converted into
the new Baha'i religion that was born in Iran in the last century.

Time and again, without request or reason, messengers claiming to
bring the latest and final message from divine sources, have been
narrating the same story that all the old religions have got entwined
in the web of superstition and have lost their pristine purity. The
new religion that they have brought is unadulterated. It is as clear
as crystal and as pure as nectar.

Astute Baha'is are saying the same thing today. They affirm that no
religion exists that can meet the demands of the twentieth century.
The unparalleled religion of Bahaullah alone is capable of fulfilling
mankind's needs today and will remain so permanently. These good
people forget that followed and practised by educated and illiterate
adherents of diverse mentalities and passing through the vicissitude
of time, the plight of Baha'ism will be the same.

Heralds of all religions have always said that they are the last and
that no prophet will come [722] after them. But ere their bones mingle
with the dust, a new and even more powerful messenger arises and will
continue to come.

Bahaullah came and he has gone. Innumerable such Bahaullahs will come
and go, generation after generation.

The history of the religions of the world teaches the same lesson.

Alberuni and Mirkband write that the disciples of Mani, the prophet
that came into prominence in Sasanian Iran, declared him to be 'the
very seal or the last messenger of God'. Yet newer messengers have
kept on coming.

Mirza Ali Mohomed, who was known as 'Bab' or the 'Gateway of God',
proclaimed his religion in Iran in 1854. At the age of thirty, by
order of the Shah, he was shot dead at Tabriz. His successor, Mirza
Husainalli, rekindled the religion and he became known as Bahaullah or
God's manifested form, God's aura or radiance, the fulfiller of God's
will, the perfect man, God's messenger, God's voice, the Almighty's
prophet of the modern age. It was announced that previous prophets had
spread the light in their own age but it was incomplete. Bahaullah is
the 'sun' of the age. He had come to complete and perfect the
unfinished work of all the prophets. He was 'the Promised One of all
Prophets'. Every prophet had predicted his advent. As spring follows
winter, bringing with it freshness and new life, he had come in this
new age to elevate humanity to a higher level. Many a whimsical
pretext was professed about him.

A great deal of harm has been wrought by the teachings of the great
religions about the advent of a future Soshyosh, a Messiah or a
Mahadi. At least fifty faked and pretentious prophets and God's [723]
messengers have beguiled mankind from time to time. Some have
succeeded in establishing new sects, but more have failed to do so.

Dreading the oppression of the Muslim Mullahs of Iran, the Baha'is
carried on their work clandestinely in the beginning. They could not
construct public places of worship. Practising of the faith and even
conversion when the occasion presented itself, were conducted behind
closed doors. For generations our community had been disgruntled by
the persecution of the mullahs. We had been rebuffed, repudiated and
rejected. At such a stage of existence the Baha'is welcomed us with
open arms. They invited us to dine with them. This was something to
gladden the hearts of our unfortunate co-religionists in their
homeland, Iran. They were naturally drawn towards the Baha'is. The
shrewd Baha'is played upon their religious sentiments and deluded the
ignorant Zoroastrians that the prophecy in their scriptures that Shah
Behram Varjavand would come one day has been fulfilled, for Bahaullah
himself was Shah Behram Varjavand.

In some of the unauthentic Pazand and Pahlavi books written after we
lost our kingdom, it has been foretold that Shah Behram Varjavand of
Kyanian lineage will come some day. At the age of thirty he will raise
an army of Hindus and Chinese and attack Iran and conquer it and will
reinstate a Zoroastrian regime in Iran.

It is understandable that uneducated Zoroastrians of Iran, fifty or
sixty years ago, believed these fictitious fairy tales; but for highly
qualified and cultured Parsis of India to gulp down such fantastic
stories today is truly regrettable. Certain gentlemen inform us that
Shah Behram Varjavand will be born between 1941 and 1950 and that 1940
to 1990 will be very bad years for the world. These people write that,
with his spiritual powers and the [724] strength of his prayers and
purity, he will perform universally renowned miracles by arresting
electricity in the atmosphere that suspends aero planes high up in the
air, will poison the planes engaged in warfare and bring them down!
What a miserable exhibition of the intellectual prowess of men who
have qualified and stepped out of the portals of the Bombay
University!

At first some Zoroastrians of Iran and later Iranian Zoroastrians
settled in India accepted Baha'ism. The secret movement of this new
religion had misled us in the past. We have been misguided by their
deceptions up to this day. The Baha'is have no churches, they have no
priests, they are free to marry non-Baha'is. The President or Secretary
of an association takes the place of a priest in their marriage
ceremonies. Some such prominent person recites a short prayer.
Thereafter the couple, their guardians and leading men of the assembly
sign the document. At the time of the wedding an 'Alvaha' chosen from
the Alvaha composed in Arabic by Bahaullah is recited. Under the
canopy of their faith it is permissible to retain the 'sudre' and
'kusti' when necessary, to pass as Zoroastrians when need arises, to
derive benefit from communal funds and its institutions. The corpse of
the deceased they bury in their own separate cemetery.

In 1905 when I commenced my studies at Columbia University in New
York, the Mazdaznan, Vedant and Baha'i movements were active. The
Mazdaznan movement had just begun. The Vedant movement had started in
1893 when Swami Vivekananda had made a memorable debut at the
Conference on World Religions at Chicago. The spread of Baha'ism had
started in 1892 by a Syrian Muslim, Ibrahim George Khairullah, who had
been [725] converted to Baha'ism. While the expansion of the Mazdaznan
sect was still in its infancy, the Vedantists and Baha'is were already
well-established.

During my stay in New York from 1905 to 1908 I saw that the Christians
who were converted to the Baha'i religion ceased to be considered
Christians and were known as Baha'is only. On returning from America in
1907 I drew the attention of leaders in Bombay to this fact, but
scholars and eminent people alike refused to countenance the Baha'i
Movement as anything more than an innocent institution, or a
Brotherhood, like the Theosophical Society. The Baha'i religion had not
found a footing amongst the co-religionists of Karachi at that time.
In 1914 when I went to America a second time with my wife, the Baha'i
movement appeared to have gained a firmer foothold. This was the
result of a wide-spread propaganda in Europe and America from 1911 to
1913 by Abbas Effendi who had adopted the name of Abdul Baha.

Our visit to Iran in 1920 brought us in contact with Baha'is at various
places. In Kazvin we found that all Iranians credited as Zoroastrians
had already become Baha'is. They had called an assembly of all the
Muslim and other Baha'is residing in the city in my honour. As a priest
or a mullah is intent upon making people believe that theirs is the
one and only true faith, I found their leader debating with me during
our discussions.

Mr. Ardeshir Edulji Reporter, who had been residing in Teheran for
nearly four decades as a representative from Bombay of the 'Society

You may be right; this might be another tactic by our resident covenant of hate mongering graphic artist to try to stir mischief between our Bahais and Zoroastrian brothers and sisters.

I have never experienced this kind of animosity from a Zoroastrian; they are generally peaceful and not malicious, thats is why i questioned whether it was the work of a worried priest; if not then i fell for the trick.

This was most probably NOt the work of an average peace loving Zoroastrian, but the work of a familiar hate monger.

Mr Bilani your computer handiwork looks very familiar!!

Sir, should I call you " covenant " or Bilani???

And have to say that I love this altered picture of my beloved Bahaullah, since His essence is the same as the essence of Zartosht.

Funny even when you want to spread poison you help us.

Thanks,

so depressing ....

Interesting article. Bahais are constantly advertising their religion, badgering people, and I find it quite annoying. As someone who doesn't believe in any form of religion, the whole idea is truly absurd. Any man claiming to be the manifestation of god, is called a schizrphrenic. And they try to sell a schizophrenic's idea, as "holly" doctrines to be followed! Savior of mankind!

I truly like our Zartoshtis in Iran, and in general, find it a shamelss act for Bahais, who are trying to make extinct the Zartoshti ideology. I wish our Zartoshtis well.

Mr Bilani, Why The Venum and Disrespect; what have you to lose?

by faryarm on

Dear Mr Bilani,

May I assume that you are respected member of the Clergy?

Regardless, one is disgusted  by such exhibition of disrespect for defacing an image revered by Bahais all over the world, not to mention its use as a composite for two Persian Manifestations of God. Zoroaster and Baha'u'llah. For this one can only leave you to whatever consequence  or divine retribution might await you.

Please forgive my frank and (No Taarof ) response to your unkind and highly offensive article, not to mention flawed account of history; although judging by such insulting exhibition, i  think as you will see, I understand where and why you think the way you do.

Sir,

The Paramount Principle of the Bahai Faith is  Independent Investigation; since Bahais dont have the “pleasure “ of third party guidance from God, by any form of professional Clergy.

Bahais DO NOT BELIEVE IN CONVERSION or proselytization, as it is categorically forbidden.

They however are encouraged to proclaim and inform. The rest is up to the seeker of this message.

In a world where Religion has become to mean nothing but ritual and dogma; It just does not make sense to say one can be converted.

Real acceptance of anything has to come from the heart and the mind, to the extent that one can withstand all forms persecution for one’s belief, like the steadfast Bahais of Iran.

Blind acceptance of the Bahai faith is totally against the very idea of independant acceptance of the truth.

Bahais consist of people from many diverse backgrounds and religions; The Belief in One God means that they believe there is NO difference in the reality of the message. No religion is final, it is progressive and although its social teachings change from age to age their fundamental moral teachings stay the same.

A Bahai of Zoroastrian ,Jewish, Christian or Muslim background believes in the Same God and His message  of unity for today.

Zoroatser, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, the Bab or Baha'u'llah, as Messengers of ONE GOD, each have brought the necessary spiritual and social teachings according to the conditions and needs of their time.

The desperate need of today in an increasing global society is Unity and the necessary institutions for peaceful coexistence.

If a Zoroastrian accepts Baha'u'llah as the promised return of Baha'u'llah; if the Jew accepts Baha'u'llah as the promised return of Mashiah ; If the Christian accepts Baha'u'llah as the promised return of Messiah; If the Muslim accepts The Bab, as the spiritual embodiment of the awaited Qaim and Baha'u'llah as the promised one all the ages destined to usher in a  new era of  unity and peace to humanity; It is because this has been a promise in all of the Holy Books of previous religions and revelations from God.

Today he Decline of Religions is due to it having lost their relevance and efficacy , because their  social teachings no longer meet the needs of the today; its leaders to use the analogy, have clung to the worship of the LAMP and not the LIGHT; the lamp having become obsolete.

The efforts of all kinds of Clergy, is like trying to convince their ever dimishing followers to worship a lamp whose light has passed on.

Perhaps because they are faced with a society that has rejected Religion as Superstition and rendered their mostly self preserving efforts obsolete.

Humanity today has no option but to accept the very Principle of independent search and the rejection of seeing through another man’s eyes.

Unfortunately , the only people who have put up WALLS traditionally opposed this idea of Unity of religions and acceptance of a new message form God have been the Clergy.

who are faced with a loss of power, prestige  and livelihood and a beautiful & ancient Chandelier which no longer serves its purpose.

Unfortunately our Zoroastrian brother is faced with such predicament in the face of the principle of Oneness of God and the progressive nature of Religion.

Dear Mr Bilani,

I found our article to be a tried and tired if not futile, misrepresentation of history; all because you refuse to accept an idea whose time has come.

I hope you will follow the example of The Council of Zoroastrians set up byyour own  Mánikchí Sáhib who consisted of the most prominent Zoroastrians of Yazd, like Kay-Khusraw-i-Khudádád, the renowned Ustád Javán-Mard, the Secretary of the Council.

He wrote a letter to Bahá’u’lláh and asked some questions. The Lawh-i-Haft Pursish, in pure Persian, was revealed in his honour. Bahá’u’lláh, in this Tablet, calls him by a new name, Shír-Mard (Lion of a man). . . Shír-Mard was the first Zoroastrian Bahá’í to be buried instead of having his body disposed of in the Dakhmih as was the custom among his people.

I leave you with the complete Tablet which is a translation written by Baha’u’llah ( although I doubt your pride will prevent you from reading or comprejending it) in pure Persian, who as the direct descendant of Sassanian king Yazdigird III , addressed the Zoroastrans of His time, this  becoming  the cause of so many of Our Zoroastrian brother and sister to accept the new message for this day and age, not in rejection of Zoroaster, but in Fulfillment of His prophecies.

Tablet of Seven Questions

Sháhriar Razaví

Introduction

From Adib Taherzadeh, The Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh, vol. 3, pp 272-3:

The Council of Zoroastrians which was set up by Mánikchí Sáhib[1] consisted of the most prominent Zoroastrians of Yazd. At one time there were nineteen councillors, six of whom became Bahá’ís. As we have already mentioned, Kay-Khusraw-i-Khudádád, the first believer, was among them. Others who joined the Faith were men of learning or people held in high esteem by the community. Notable among them was the renowned Ustád Javán-Mard, the Secretary of the Council. He was a teacher by profession and became a devoted believer. He wrote a letter to Bahá’u’lláh and asked some questions. The Lawh-i-Haft Pursish, in pure Persian, was revealed in his honour.[2] Bahá’u’lláh, in this Tablet, calls him by a new name, Shír-Mard (Lion of a man). . . Shír-Mard was the first Zoroastrian Bahá’í to be buried instead of having his body disposed of in the Dakhmih[3] as was the custom among his people.

In the Name of the Lord of Utterance, the All-Knowing!

Praised be the Sanctified Lord Who, from the effulgence of the Sun of Grace, hath illumined the world. From the letter "'" there hath appeared the Most Great Ocean, and from the letter "Há,'" the Pure Essence. He is the Almighty, Whose purpose the power of men can never frustrate, nor can the hosts of kings hinder His utterance. Thy letter was received and from it was heard thy call. Therein the pearls of love were hid, and the mysteries of kindliness concealed. I beseech the Peerless Lord to confirm thee in aiding His Cause and to assist thee in guiding the sore-athirst in the wilderness of ignorance to the water of life. He is the Able, the All-Powerful. To that which thou hath asked of the Ocean of Knowledge and the Day Star of Wisdom, We now make reply.

The first question: "First, in what tongue should God, the Peerless, be worshipped and in what direction is it befitting to turn?"

The beginning of all things is the worship of God, which followeth upon recognition of Him. Sanctified must be the eyes if they are to recognise Him. Sanctified must likewise be the tongue to utter His praise. In this Day, the faces of the learned and the wise are turned in His direction; nay, every direction itself is inclined towards Him.

O Shír-Mard! I beseech God that thou be a man of action in the arena, and by the power of the Omnipotent, arise and say: "O high-priest![4] Ears have been given you that they may hearken to the mystery of Him Who is the Self-Dependent, and eyes that they may behold Him. Wherefore flee ye? The Incomparable Friend is manifest. He speaketh that wherein lieth salvation.

Were ye, O high priests, to discover the perfume of the rose garden of understanding, ye would seek none other but Him, and would recognise, in His new vesture, the All Wise and Peerless One, and would turn your eyes from the world and all who seek it, and would arise to help Him[5]

The second question is regarding religion and faith.

The Faith of God hath, in this Day, been made manifest. He Who is the Possessor of the World is come to guide the people. His faith is righteousness and His ordinance forbearance. This faith bestoweth eternal life and this ordinance leadeth men to the world of detachment. Therein, all faith and religion is contained. Cling ye thereunto and hold fast.

The third question: "In what manner should we deal with the people of this day who have segregated themselves into separate religions, each regarding their own religion and faith as superior and more exalted than others, so that we may not suffer at their hands and tongues?"

O lion amongst men! Regard suffering when endured in the path of the Omnipotent as comfort itself. Endured in His path, every pain is a mighty remedy, every bitterness, sweetness itself and every abasement an exaltation. Were men to seek and understand, they would readily offer up their lives for this suffering, for it is the key to treasures. Outwardly, it is abhorrent, but inwardly it is pleasing. We accept and affirm that which thou sayest. The people of this day, bereft of the sun-like effulgence of the true Friend, have considered Him their enemy. Shouldst thou wish to be free from suffering, recite this utterance which hath emanated from the Pen of the All-Merciful:

"O my God, O my God![6] I testify to Thy oneness and Thy singleness. I beg of Thee, O Thou Who Possessor of Names and Fashioner of Heavens, by the influence of Thine exalted Word and the potency of Thy Supreme Pen, to aid me with the standards of Thy power and might, and to protect me from the mischief of Thine enemies, who have broken Thy Covenant and Testament. Thou art, verily, the Almighty, the Most Powerful."[7]

This invocation, like unto a mighty fortress and a powerful host, shall protect and deliver thee.

The fourth question: "Our Books have announced the appearance of Sháh Bahrám with manifold signs to guide the people..."

O friend! Whatsoever hath been in the Books hath been revealed and made clear. From every direction, the signs have been manifested. The Omnipotent one is calling, in this Day, and announcing the appearance of the Supreme Heaven. The world is illumined by the light of His appearance, yet few are the eyes to behold. Ask of the one true God to bestow wisdom upon His servants. Wisdom leadeth to understanding and hath ever been the cause of salvation. The understanding of the mind is derived from insightful vision. Were the people to gaze with their own eyes, they would, in this Day, behold the world illuminated with a new light. Say: the Day-Star of Wisdom is manifest and the Sun of Knowledge evident. Happy the one who attaineth thereunto, who seest and recognizeth Him.

The fifth question is regarding the bridge of irá, "paradise" and "hell".

Verily the Messengers have come and spoken the truth. That which the Divine Harbinger hath announced, hath been and shall be made manifest. The world is established upon reward and punishment. Heaven and hell have ever been and are confirmed by knowledge and wisdom, for the existence of reward and punishment requireth them. The first station and the foremost status is the paradise of Divine contentment. Whosoever attaineth His contentment, is reckoned among the denizens of the most exalted paradise, and, upon the ascension of his soul, shall attain that which mere pen and ink are powerless to describe. The irá, "the balance", "paradise", "hell-fire" and whatsoever hath been mentioned and written in the Divine Books, is clear and evident to those with seeing eyes and to men of great insight. At the hour of the manifestation and appearance of the Day-Star of inner mystery, all dwell in the same station and then God uttereth that which He willeth. He who heareth Him and accepteth Him is called an inmate of paradise. The irá, "the balance" and whatsoever hath been mentioned regarding the Day of Resurrection hath now occurred and come to pass. This day is the Greatest Resurrection. We cherish the hope that, aided by the wine of heavenly inspiration and the Fount of divine bounty, thou shouldst attain the station of discovery and vision, and witness inwardly and outwardly all which hath been mentioned.

The sixth question: "After relinquishing the body and the departure of the soul to the other place..."

In this regard, a while ago there appeared from the Pen of Knowledge that which sufficeth the wise and bestoweth greatest felicity upon the learned. Verily, We say, the [departed] soul deriveth happiness from goodly deeds and benefiteth from charity and generosity offered in the path of God.

The seventh question is concerning the name, lineage and ancestry of the Noble One.

Regarding this matter, ’Abú'l-Fadl-i-Gulpáygání, upon him be My Glory, hath written of the Heavenly Books that which bestoweth knowledge and increaseth understanding. The Faith of God is endowed with power and might. Erelong will that which the Tongue hath uttered be manifested. We beseech God to empower thee to assist Him. He is the All-Wise, the Most Powerful. Shouldst thou obtain and peruse the Súrah-i-Ra’ís and the Súrah-i-Mulúk, thou wouldst find thyself no longer in need of that which thou hast asked and wouldst arise in service to the Cause of God in such wise that neither the cruelty of the world nor the power of its people would prevent thee from rendering assistance to the Ancient and All-Possessing One. I beseech God to confirm thee in that which shall cause the exaltation and the perpetuation of thy name. Strive, perchance thou mayest obtain these aforementioned Tablets [Súrahs] and acquire therefrom a portion of the pearls of wisdom and utterance which have been revealed from the treasury of the Pen of the All Bountiful.

Glory be upon thee and upon all who have remained sure, steadfast, firm and faithful.”

ZARTOSHT OR BAHA'U'LLAH?

Fortunately , The Answer is simple:

Their Source and inspiration, as spiritual guidance is as the Sun that appears every day; it might be a different day, with a different name, but its the same SUN.
