Knowing that your name - mahi - does not start with ‘s’ Your insertion in constellation of haftseen always was a mystery to me,
Until I read that you’re symbol of something…
But for me you’re symbol of endurance, an epic struggle for staying or going…
Your four months battle with loneliness when your "joft" had died much earlier,
Was most neglected event of the past spring season….
How could we do that? To ignore the fact that your eyes always were directed to the bottom of the jug.
I kept changing your water every 4-5 days,
Without asking you, what you really want from me?
You never flapped for life in my palm in the grave momentum of deprivation from water.
Perhaps I elongate your sufferings and I should’ve committed a terrible crime.
Now I bury you under a dried plant’s pot.
You will turn to the first ever bud of the spring’s vegetation, craving for the dawn’s drizzle...

Although its not
by persian westender on Sat Jul 05, 2008 06:50 PM PDTAlthough its not applicable to my deceased fish, I keep the instruction for the future use. Merci
My fish didn’t seem to go O.J . I guess his ‘joft” had died of natural causes. Although, always things could be fishy in this scenario, he went heart-broken and started to look melancholic gradually until he died. But may be I’m too naïve.
khda biamorzatesh anyway
Of course, I saved them :o)
by Nadias on Sat Jul 05, 2008 02:48 PM PDTFor years I tried to find simple directions on how to take care of a goldfish to figure out, what I was doing wrong.
Your instructions are amazing! Short and to the point. I saved them not only for me but for any friends and family who may get a goldfish. Your instructions will increase the life span of many goldfish to come. :o)
Isn't it totally awesome!!!

Re-reading it, I am cringing at my typos. Also, some parts are a bit confusing. For example:
"it is better to keep the bowl with the fresh water empty for 24 hours before transferring the fish to it"
Obviously if the bowl is filled with fresh water, it is not empty, jeeeez. What I meant was, 2-3 days before I transferred Cptn Nima to his new bowl, I would fill the new bowl with water and just let the water "settle" for lack of a better term. I have no idea why but it seemed very beneficial to the fish.
By the way Cptn Nima also had a "joft" who died soon after I brought the newlyweds home. Although I have clung to the belief that it was MY negligence that accidentally resulted in this fatal outcome, hubby would tease me, eyeing Cptn Nima suspiciously and muttering about his cleverly disguised "crime of passion." I don't know. Maybe he found out his "joft" cheated on him and went all O.J. on her... It is true he lived a long and happy life for 3 years following his joft's demise, with nary a sign of regret or mourning, which is kind of suspicious.
To Save A Goldfish
by Nadias on Sat Jul 05, 2008 07:13 PM PDTPersian Westender, It is okay to select the name that you prefer for me: Nadia, Natalia, Natalie, Nathalie.......:o) From time to time, I have to use my old Nadias account to make sure people realize that I am not Rosie T. :o)
A long time ago on JJ's blog Swim forever little goldfish! , Niki gave some wonderful advice on how to care for a goldfish. I saved it in a word document to use for future use. The following are Niki's recommendations:
My lessons in taking care of a goldfish :-)by Niki Tehranchi on Fri Nov 02, 2007 04:17 PM CDT
I am not sure if these are golden rules but they have worked for me so far (learned them from Grampa who has a record in keeping his goldfish for 5 years)
1) Don't overfeed: a few flakes per day, given in one feeding, usually in the morning, suffice for their small little bodies
2) Don't go crazy changing the water: Every time you do it it is pretty traumatic for the poor little thing, that is if you employ my primitive methid of simply scooping him out and put him in a new fresh bowl of water. I do it once every 2 weeks.
3) As I said I keep 2 bowls handy: one is the old one and the other is the new one instead of having poor fish simmer in a temporary cup while I clean his bowl, I simply transfer him to the new bowl. Also for some reason, it is better to keep the bowl with the fresh water empty for 24 hours before transferring the fish to it
4) Lots of love and attention including talking to him (but don't knock on the glass, the vibrations are not good for them)
5) Good luck

Nadia/Natalia: It was very coool. I couldn't play the second one though
Niki: sorry for misspelling your name.

by persian westender on Sat Jul 05, 2008 07:53 AM PDTNatalia: I love lizards and I'm from desert area too..
by the way, I couldn't find any good youtube video to reply you(other comments), plus my youtube doesnot work sometimes.
JJ: Thanks. also for re-writing my blog to the original format(seperated lines), as it supposed not to be in a condensed text. It didn't work for me at first and I gave up.
Nikki: This is all matter of co-exist. On the same day which our fish died, I had eaten a tuna fish and on days befor some sushis! but affections come when you coexist with a living organism. we were with this fish for only four months, I can understand what whould be three years.
You know.......
by Nadias on Sat Jul 05, 2008 02:39 PM PDTJJ and Niki could give you some great advice on how to keep your goldfish alive a lot longer. Especially, since Nooroz will be here before, you know it.

That really moved me
by Niki Tehranchi on Sat Jul 05, 2008 01:26 AM PDTBelieve it or not, I am still mourning the death of my beloved pet goldfish "Captain Nima" who entered my life 3 nowrooz ago and left it soon after our third anniversary together. Someone on this website asked me how I can have affection for a goldfish when I also happen to eat other types of fish. As for hubby, he never understood my love for what he considers this slimy, cold blooded "thing." It is all still a mystery to me.
I had no idea...
by Natalia Alvarado-Alvarez on Sat Jul 05, 2008 12:53 AM PDTI truly had no idea that one of the Persian traditions is to get a goldfish. How fascinating
Yes, lizards tend to have a higher rate of survival as pets. I should know, I was raised in the desert area. As a little girl, I would always catch a couple of them and keep them as pets

by persian westender on Sat Jul 05, 2008 12:40 AM PDTNatalia: It wasn't my choice to pick such a pet. This is a tradition to put fishes(usually red gold fish) on a table, set by particular items in the Persian new year. I rather to have lizards as my pets,(even on haftseen): you know they are very sagjoon(die hard),so I would not have any remorse... anyway thanx for your sympathy.
Anonymous,The Mrs, NC, n.zanin..(are you dealing with identity crisis?): Don't kill the fish, and don't argue with your lover! If the fish is alone, find a "joft" for him and let them to breed and then sell the offsperings to petcetera, They will be die-hardest fishes ever, according "survival of the fittest" rule...
Well.. with the blog above and the comments below (from me), readers have every right to call me ' a bipolar freak'!
Persian this is so
by AnonymousTheMrs (not verified) on Fri Jul 04, 2008 08:28 PM PDTPersian this is so interesting. I actually murdered a goldfish a while ago before norooz. It looked sick and I just felt bad so I euthanized it. Then, I got a norooz fish and the thing just won't die. None of my fishes have ever survived this one. This afternoon, I was telling my lover that we should kill this one too. I'm sick of cleaning the bowl. My lover is against this because our fish isn't even sick. So now, we're arguing about it. Very interesting.
