I am an Arab (poem from Mahmoud Darwish)

Identity Card

Record !

I am an Arab

And my identity card is number fifty thousand

I have eight children

And the nineth is coming after a summer

Will you be angry?

Record !

I am an Arab

Employed with fellow workers at a quarry

I have eight children

I get them bread

Garments and books

from the rocks...

I do not supplicate charity at your doors

Nor do I belittle myself

at the footsteps of your chamber

So will you be angry?

Record !

I am an Arab

I have a name without a title

Patient in a country

Where people are enraged

My roots

Were entrenched before the birth of time

And before the opening of the eras

Before the pines, and the olive trees

And before the grass grew.

My father..

descends from the family of the plow

Not from a privileged class

And my grandfather..was a farmer

Neither well-bred, nor well-born!

Teaches me the pride of the sun

Before teaching me how to read

And my house

is like a watchman's hut

Made of branches and cane

Are you satisfied with my status?

I have a name without a title !

Record !

I am an Arab

You have stolen the orchards

of my ancestors

And the land

which I cultivated

Along with my children

And you left nothing for us

Except for these rocks..

So will the State take them

As it has been said?!

Therefore !

Record on the top of the first page:

I do not hate people

Nor do I encroach

But if I become hungry

The usurper's flesh will be my food

Beware..

Beware..

Of my hunger

And my anger !

Will You Guys Just Stop It Already

by n.zanincanadainotloggedin (not verified) on

Although the poem is clearly about the arab consciousness, the powerful emotions of helplessness and anger are universal. Oppressed people everywhere, including those living under the IRI, have these same feelings and will be able to identify easily with this poem. "The anguish of dispossession and exile" or the pain of occupation does not recognize national frontiers.

"I will continue to humanise even the enemy... The first teacher who taught me Hebrew was a Jew. The first love affair in my life was with a Jewish girl. The first judge who sent me to prison was a Jewish woman. So from the beginning, I didn't see Jews as devils or angels but as human beings." Several poems are to Jewish lovers. "These poems take the side of love not war,"

- Mahmoud Darwish

Let's Not Get Carried Away...

by Anonymous Observer on

Anyone who has read my previous comments should know that I am what some may call and ultra nationalist Iranian.  I am also a storng supporter of the State of Israel.  But we must not confuse nationalism and geopolitical disagreements with racism.  As Iranians, we are the children of Cyrus, the first advocate of human rights in history.  We should follow his teachings.  While I firmly believe that we, as Iranians, have a superior culture to that of some of our neighbors, there is nothing that suggests that ALL Arabs are savages or uneducated brutes, or that we are "better" than any Arab that walks the face of this planet!  Racism is an ugly thing whereever it originates from, be it Iran, Arab nations or Nazi Germany...

The phrase "never again" should be a universal warning against racism ANYWHERE in the world...one of the things that the Holocaust showed us was the ugly side of humanity, and how we can get carried away with our sense of superiority.

Pretty much sums up Arab mentality.

Sohrab says: I might be a

by Midwesty on

Sohrab says: I might be a descendent of a plant in India, an ancient pottery from the dirt of Si-alk, or a prostitute from Bokhara. Three nations claimed that Molana belongs to them where he rejects the idea of belonging to anything and anywhere: pas adam gardam adam chon arghanoon...(so let me vanish into nothingness...) This poem is about internationalism. Palestinian problems are the humanity problems. We can never judge them from the cozy corner of our warm homes with a full stomach where children in Gaza are starving as we speak.

Thanks n.zanincanadai for bringing this into the light...

divide and rule, this is what's all these anti-arab hysteria

by zionist detector (not verified) on

about. There's a difference between the rulers and the masses. One has to differenciate between the reactionary arab rulers in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, etc and the arab masses. According to the latest polls the arab masses have no problems with Iranians and even support Iran to achieve nuclear energy technology. But thier corrupt rulers are a different story they are afraid of Iranian nation's progress. They have stayed in power by the help of the old and new Western colnial powers. Arab masses are a lot more sympathetic towards Iranians than jews or Europeans who hate us all. Darwishes was a great poet and the posted poem is an example of his humanity.

Dear Observer

by Bunyip on

These same Arab brothers and sisters of yours all united together with the sole aim of destroying our land and people for 8 long years.

Perhaps you would like to hear their laughter when they get our money, and thumb their noses at us.

This Iranian has not forgiven nor forgotten what your so-called brothers and sisters have done to us.

This is the proverb that I used to hear when I was in Iran. But the thing that some people do not understand is that beside bread kids need clothing, toys, education, mental support from their parents,,pocket money and health care.

I am An Arab Part II

by AnonymousDarwish (not verified) on

I am an Arab!

My Pride is more important than the truth!

I Am an Arab!

My Family honor is more important than facts....more important than your life, more important than my child's life.....

I am an Arab!

If you damage my honor, I will blow myself up.

I am an Arab!

Blood is the way to conflict resolution.

I am an Arab!

Beware beware....I will blow my self up

I am an Arab!

If my honor is damaged my hunger is blood.

I am an Arab.

Following the theme of the recent shoe throwing incident

by n.zanincanadai on

Getting to know the poet: Mahmoud Darwish (13 March 1941 – 9 August 2008) was a respected Palestinian poet and author who won numerous awards for his literary output and was regarded as the Palestinian national poet. In his work, Palestine became a metaphor for the loss of Eden, birth and resurrection, and the anguish of dispossession and exile.
