I'd like everyone to describe what you are doing today, every week, every month or planning to do next month, etc., about your country. I am assuming most of us are Iranian with multiple citizenship. It is OK to reply even if you are not Iranian or consider yourself primarily non-Iranian. I am looking for things you are doing right now or planning to do realistically, and not what you "wish" to do. You may wish to also add
how your actions are making a difference.
Would love to hear from you all.
Thanks for your time, in advance.

Nationalism vs. Universalism
by Curious Joe on Thu Jun 05, 2008 02:19 AM PDTWhat am I going to do for "my country"? --- Puh !! What Country?
Who defines what is the meaning of a piece of real estate called a "country", or a set of belief systems called culture, religions, etc?
I could be a Catholic priest fucking the altar boys, and my country would be "The Vatican". I could be an Ayatollah, unknowingly giving the oil money to Rafsanjani, and my country would be Iran. I could be a fundamentalist Jew, thrashing the Palestinians, and my country would be Israel. I could be a mere greedy Capitalist Pig, sucking the blood of workers for the illusion of "Freedom", and my country would be "the United States of America? -- and the list goes on. Come on Mehdi ... Let's become clear on what question you are posing.
JFK said: Ask NOT what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.
Considering all the embarrassments caused by a bunch of yahoo countries to a civilized person like me, the question is: What can these countries do for me?

I am as Iranian, as you are,and may be more. Since I do not think of my Hamvatanan as these charity cases. Our land is blessed with riches and if the money is not miss managed it would bring prosperity to all . They do not need your charity(to make your sins go away and make you feel closer to your 72 virgins!).

My thoughts are now with Mr. political opposition mind who is living a luxurious life abroad: at the end of a successful business day, when he parks his leased BMW, or S class Mercedes in front of starbucks or coffee bean in sunset hollywood or anywhere in the world sipping on a $5 latte showing off his hugo boss shirt and $400 true religion jeans with leather banded Omega watch acting like a perverted old man looking at younger girls and discussing the political situation in iran and even playing Takhtehnard. Do you know that $5 coffee can feed 3 children? have you ever fed or dressed any child in Iran? if you haven't done this then shut your mouth and enjoy your life wherever you are but don't intrude in my life.
we all need to stop sympathizing and start taking action instead.

I have been following your writings and posts on various topics on Iranian.com. I think adverizing for one's religion (in your case Bahaism) is fine. However, at this juncture you are not helping Iran. At best you are just there.
However, I like your statement that "teach them how to fish rather than giving them the fish ..... ". When you raise the level of education by helping young students in Iranian universitues through grants and lab equipment, etc. , YOU ARE TEACHING. Education by your own admission is the best we could do. Why are you so contradictory? Is that part of Bahai teaching too? (nothing against your beliefs)
What you have done for your country
by Anonymous500 (not verified) on Mon Jun 02, 2008 01:48 PM PDT:-)) Teflaki!! Tarsidi? You call me an "animal" because I have reported to all what is going on in Britain with respect to the possible removal of the PMOI's name from the infamous terror list.
Hey buddy, who calls "itslef" %; instead, you should ineed call yourslef "a 100%-bottom-burnt" (sad dar sad mataht-sookhteh) now that you are realizing that your mullah-masters mortal enemy, the PMOI, is about to be de-proscribed.
I truly understand the fright that is dawning on your spines and those of your mullah-masters thus the reason a "Lat O Lompan" has the audacity of calling others "animal" because of a simple news reporting!!
But again, as Freud used to say, a cigar could just be a cigar; in your case, the name of the PMOI is more than a cigar, it is a "Shataragh" to your "Bisharaf Banagoosh," and I say enjoy it % whatever.
I am entering dangerous territories ,but have to say it!!!!!
by Tahirih on Mon Jun 02, 2008 01:45 PM PDTI was reading the comments, and one in particular jumped up,the one about collecting money and sending it to Iran to help universities labs and students and orphans and poor people ......

My dear hamvatanan, I am all for helping our country ,but as they say it, don't give them fish, teach them how to fish!!!To empower a nation ,collecting money is a band aid solution not the cure.
Education is the only way to promote any society, I do not know how exactly but in my corner of the world I try to make bridges between different groups of Iranians that live here and educating them by my actions that we can be united and kind to each other, no matter what religion or ideology we believe in.

by Natalia Alvarado-Alvarez on Mon Jun 02, 2008 01:41 PM PDTYes, they were a great civilization, minus the human sacrifices. I can assure you that there are people already in Mexico trying to revive the languages and culture. Some have gone as far as recording some of the few remaining speakers of the native tongues of the Mayans and Aztecs to preserve for future generations.
On the helping others, I do believe in focusing my volunteer efforts on helping more than one ethnic group. One must use one's resources as effectively as possible.

Secondly with regards to creating an org to help young iranian students in Iran, given that anyone could just make a suggestion like mine and be a crook (try to take advantage of the inocent) I suggest further that we go through a third person/org such as JJ, if he agrees to take responsibility. I think pretty much we all trust him. If you wish to discuss further (perhaps first with JJ), please email me at: nmg3010@yahoo.com. I consider educating Iranians about the system and also educating the world about the dangers of a potential war between Iran and US is helping Iran (and the US). You have many questions that are all over the place. I am trying to stick with the subject here.

A warm hello to my "hamvatan" living in Iran. You rock! Interesting how those who are themselves in need seem to help the most! You are awesome!
To: Natalia
Well, I think they started the human sacrifice and that caused their eventual demise. But otherwise, they used to be a great civilization. You could resurrect the good part ;) And yes, indirect help is also help. Hispanic community does include people from Mexico. Sounds like you are doing work for areas larger than one country though. Even better!

Mehdi, Did you forget?
by Natalia Alvarado-Alvarez on Mon Jun 02, 2008 02:19 PM PDTDid you forget that the Aztec and/or Mayan Empire would do human sacrifices? I certainly, have not.
I do get your meaning though.
:o)
Now, as to what have I done to help my country. Well, my object has not been at this time to help Mexico directly. Instead, I have focused on helping Hispanics through various organizations.
For instance, I joined the Susan G. Komen organization in November of 2007. I am using my bilingual skills (Spanish/English) to spread the message of Breast Cancer Awareness within the Hispanic community. .I have decided to take my volunteer efforts with the organization up a notch and will become even more involved this summer.
I also, volunteer with HAWC (Houston Area Women's Organization). They help women that have been in domestic violence situations. I work with the children in the main offices day care, while the victims of abuse get counseling. Again, I used my Bilingual skills to create a safe environment with the children that I work with.
I may not be doing anything directly for Mexico but rather for the Hispanics and other ethnic groups as well within the U.S.
I did try to help the Iranian community through Stop Child Executions Campaign but alas, I am more effective at the local level when it comes to volunteering.

Children are the future of our country
by Live From Tehran (not verified) on Mon Jun 02, 2008 11:16 AM PDTI help with clothing, food, school material and anything in my power to save 3 beautiful children from a poor family. Their father works really hard but it's tough to make the ends meet. it's a small contribution that i can make for now since i am myself a school teacher that recently lost my job. but i won't let the depressed society effect and take away the smiles of these innocent children.
The children are the future of our country. We must save them and teach them a value of being. teach them how to smile and be carefree. No child should go to sleep hungry, no child must die because their parents can't afford needed surgery.
Please help one child at a time.
Waht you do for Iran
by Anonymous500 (not verified) on Mon Jun 02, 2008 11:12 AM PDTAgaha Mehdi, since you are asking Iranian-Americans about what is it that they are doing to help Iran, here is what I have been doing lately, take a look at it and see if you'd like it buddy? Share it with your NIAC comrades too:
From the The Sunday Telegraph:

What happened to my comment?
by Anonymousmm (not verified) on Mon Jun 02, 2008 09:43 AM PDTWhat happened to my comment? Why didn't you publish it?
Let me put it to you this way:
Why do you think legitimizing the Islamic Republic and helping its survival is "helping" Iran or Iranians?
And as I said before, financial support or donating money to orphanages or building clinics or providing housings for your Hamvatans/family/relatives is not a big deal and it's done all the time. I'm sure everyone will do it , if they could afford it.
Let's us know what you're really trying to get at...
We all try to do what we can
by IRANdokht on Mon Jun 02, 2008 11:14 AM PDTI think we all try to do what we can to help our country and our people. We help small organizations outside Iran or with the use of internet or family connections in Iran we can help the orphanages , hospitals and schools in the country. Unfortunately this kind of effort has not been centralized or more organzied and most people are helping in very personal ways.
Due to the shortcomings of the IRI government and the sanctions imposed on Iran, and the magnitude of poverty and unemployment have caused a large percentage of Iranians to be in need of help. With the Iranians abroad not having an organized way of helping, none of us can make a huge difference in the lives of very many people.
If we show good faith and do what we can, we can make a difference in one person's life.
