It is customary for the Mayor of the City to be the lead on these Olympic "city" selection matters, in the US. At times the Governor of the state leads, but never the President of the US who is not originally from Chicago.In fact, Peter Uberoff was the lead on the 1980 Olympics; Regan played no part as Governor or President.

But, if you can't deliver on what you promised the voters... a smoke screen is also effective.

Obama said many things during the presidential campaign trail that he's not following through with. On this particular topic, it didn't strike me so much as arrogant as it did frivolous and irresponsible given everything else at hand he needs to focus on. I for one, am disappointed in him.

Obama's not to blame

He's only trying to bring in some much needed revenue to his home state. Why wouldn't he? I rooted for Rio because it was about time South America would host such event, but how can we blame Obama for wanting a little positive light to a region that's been hurt by the fallen economy, and create some excitement, new jobs and revenue for a state that he represented in the Senate?
