If I had a son who believed in something so much that he'd give his life for it. Iranians should be proud that there were kids like this at one point in Iran's history.

It's not about Islam or the Islamic Republic...it's about dying for your beliefs, KEEPING YOUR LAND and STOPPING AND ILLEGAL OCCUPATION.

This little boy is a true symbol of what Iranians once were. I guess things have changed within just a few years, but looking at this child can bring tears to anyone's eyes.

Not Brainwashed...

I grew up in the US, and all I hear about is kids being brainwashed in Iran and promised 72 virgins etc etc by the US Media, however I do remember this when I was in the first grade..I had to learn the "Pledge of Allegiance"

I guess from that point on I too have been brainwashed and have "Pledged allegiance to a flag". I didn't understand it then as I didn't understand when kids in Russia spoke without raising their hands they'd be shot immediately in front of the other school children and that I should be happy to live in the old US of A. After hearing that in the first grade, I was extremely happy to live here in the US and was very willing to pledge "allegiance" to this flag.

If what has happened to this boy in Iran is called brainwashing in his school as many claim, then I shall be the first to claim that I too was brainwashed in my younger years in school in the US.

You guys claim that this kid is brainwashed? YET he is being STOPPPPPPPPPED from joining the war in this video. I simply do not understand your logic. If he was being FORCED to get on the bus, then ok. but i wonder if you guys watched the video. he is being PREVENTED from joining and being told to go TO SCHOOOOL! Sometimes people really just argue to argue. You can't argue that point since it doesnt reconcile itself with the fact in the video!

This young generation can

This young generation can not be understood by us. One needs to live in the same atmosphere to understand that a 13 or 16 year yound boy is a brave equal of a 30 year old guy grown up outside. They grow up with real depravation, see their brothers and friends going to war, hear about their dads being killed in the war. They mabe 13 or 16 but they are mentally more grown up than us.

The problem is: It is neither Islamic nor a Republic! It is a Hashalhaf of bunch of opportunists who have seized power and are comfortably enjoying its fruits. If you are with them, good for you, it must be nice to belong to the class of wealthy imbecils. The child is suffering

The best can be said about this child's ailment is depression and norosis. He at that particularly difficult time for Iran was suffering from adolescence depression.

It has nothing to do with patriotism.

Most probably the child was also abused at some stage of his young life, who knows how or by whom.

I am sure the government had no objective to necessarily take these kids up front. Using patriotic, religious,

Using patriotic, religious, epic and emotional arguments, slogans and songs to recruit volunteers to defend the country during war time is NOT brainwashing. This is a common practice all over the world and it has been so since the beginning of history.

No one is denying that the Iranian government was also using these techniques to recruit soldiers to go to war against Iraq, but they did NOT force anyone (adult or minor) to join the war. The official age to join the Basij was 15, and most of these teens from borderline town that were directly touched by the war. Because they had first hand lived and felt the imminent threat of war on themselves and their families and felt the survival urge to fight back.

Very rare were the Tehrani teens who joined the war just because their principle supposedly "convinced" them that by getting crushed by an Iraqi tank, they would go to heaven!

As Iranians we all owe everything we have, and I mean everything, to these exceptional people (young and old, religious and secular) who put themselves in great pain and suffering to defend us. Some of them, who happened to survive, are still tremendously suffering from the injuries, disabilities, exposure to chemical weapons, or extreme financial hardship that resulted from their volunteer acts of bravery. We ought to treat them and talk about them with utmost respect and veneration. Calling them "brainwashed" and implying that they were "fooled" to protect us, is plain ignorant, snobbish and ungrateful.

I only had to read the first 3 sentences to understand the gist of your arguement. Your opinion is absurd and based on completely false notions. Ask yourself, would that young boy been have been given any proper armour, training, or other equipment if he has been foolish enough to join that war? Or would he have just been given a "key"? I think we all know the answer. as a woman, how could you stand behind anything this regime has done?

Brain washing

I can't believe there are people here who try to deny the brain washing that was going on in those days in schools. I was one of those children that were being told on a daily basis how by going to war I would ensure my parents, siblings etc would all go to heaven if we went to war. How glorioius and brave those kids that went to jebheh, (having lied about their age) tied grenades to their waists and jumped in front of Iraqi tanks were. How by doing this act they had ensured they and their family would be on Gods right hand side. In fact I remember the line being used that since our parents had done so much for us, it would be our ultimate gift to secure their place in heaven and the only way we could ensure spending eternity with them. I bought all this. I was truelly brainwashed. I was ready to go to the front line for my parents and my country . I wasn't the only one either. The School principal had half of our class convinced.They had even told us how to lie about our age to sneak in and how not to tell our parents until after we had gone. I was 11 years old! Does this sound sane to anyone?? Luckily my father stopped me and took me out of that situation.
Please don't make excuses for this regime when you haven't experienced their handiwork.

I am so sorry to hear about your horrible experience. But I do believe that those soldiers (including your brother) who lost their lives in the Iran-Iraq war, died indeed to serve "Good" against "Evil". And by "Good" I don't mean the Islamic Republic, but the life, integrity, culture and territory of Iran.

And I truly believe that the soldiers who went to war did so based on their sense of duty, values, unconditional love of others, love of their country, love of their culture and beliefs...etc NOT to satisfy a sexual urge for " virgins"!! NOT because they were "brainwashed"!!

And NO ONE forced them to go to war. That's a huge lie. Millions of adult males did not go to war because they simply didn't want to or because they had other responsibilities...etc Adult males were not forced to go to war, let alone children!

Maybe we should take a look at our own beliefs for once and ask ourselves if WE have not been brainwashed all these years, to take as facts many unfounded rumors and lies.

PLASTIC KEYS?

The myth of the "plastic keys" was first started by the Mujahideen Khalqh and the western press has kept repeating it (following Hitler's motto that if you say a lie enough times, people will believe it).

As Dr. Algar of UC Berkeley has stated, "if their were such plastic keys, wouldn't we have at least a few hundred out of 1 million of supposed keys as proof of their existence?"

I mean, not everyone died in the war, and many people didn't even make it to the war front. How come their is no evidence or even a single existance of these plastic keys. 1 MILLION plastic keys, yet you don't have proof of a single one?

I salute all those who fought for our homeland's sake, not for some Islamic-brand lie. However, this video in my opinion is misguided because
1) it involves a child who, no matter how sincere, is mentally incapable of making a potential life and death decision(hence the international law banning use of child soldiers).
2)The adults seem to push with their hands and pull with their feet(as the old Persian saying goes), kind of like a hot Taarof situation.
