Searching for Culture

When I was very young, the Persian side of my family, my dad, left for China. As bad as it sounds, while I had the chance to learn about my culture I didn't because I didn't understand how precious one's culture is, and I was embarrassed to be Persian. Now that I am a little bit older, I regret pretending I was only Austrian and Irish. I would love to learn about the Persian culture and Farsi in hopes that I can realize my identity more, since I believe one's background is a crutial part of them. If you can help out thanks bunches :)

By the way My name is Lela, and I'm 15 years old.

by Natalia Alvarado-Alvarez on

Roji's mom,

You are very welcome. I noticed this new three young ladies on the web-site and decided to keep an eye on them. I did not want them to be harmed.

**********************

My sixteen year old son also, visits this web-site from time to time. I made sure to sit down and have a chat with him on safety issues on the internet. He does not use his real picture for an avatar or his real name. He writes and reads at the level of a sophmore at the university level, so the people on this web-site don't know that he is just sixteen.

However, like me, he believes in being objective, and as logical as possible on many subjects. It makes for some good debates without being attacked. He only comments. :o)

I wish you, young ladies the best. You have so many wonderful things to discover.  :o)

PS: Setiz, Sepaas! for the advice. Indeed we want our youth to be safe, prosperous and happy. :o)

I hadn't yet.. but without your warning I might have if it had offended me. I wouldn't want anything to ruin my chances of visiting Iran! I've wanted to ever since my dad told me about it.. that was a longggg time ago since he lost custody a few years ago.

One more thing ...

by Setiz (not verified) on

I thought I mention this to you too that if you are ever planning to travel to iran: please be extra careful NOT to comment on political or social or religious issues related to islamic republic of iran under your official name or your recognizable identity. I am pretty sure that IRI monitors this site and other similar sites for what they consider offensive to them. And we all want you to be totally and completely safe and sound if you ever decide to travel to iran.

I am sorry if I sound like interfering, but we all want OUR youth to be totally safe wherever they are.

topol's mom

by maman (not verified) on

I encourage both of my children to visit this site on a regular basis, of coarse they are teenagers and not a toddler!
though i agree with you in that posting personal info. should be avoided, i think this site is alot safer than other sites. i do monitor what they read and talk to them about my views; but in all honesty, i trust iranians more than i trust any other nationality or ethnic group!
as a mother i learned long time ago that i can't raise my children in a fabricated world, depriving them of experiencing life for them selves. i learned that my children will have their own share of happiness, sadness, failure, mistake and success. and all i can do just be there and guide and support them.

Dear Lela,(Lela jaan)

It is wonderful that you want to learn about
your dad's rich culture. There are many wonderful things to learn and much to appreciate.

I just saw your post and Nadia's very appropriate response and warning to you.
I do believe that the average age on this site is older than the two of you wonderful girls' ages combined!
Much of what you see here is very political, and in political debates things can get very hot in the sense that all kinds of disagreements arise.

The suggestions given here, to call or write to the Camp people to find such programs near you, and other events for your age group seems like a great idea.(or at least they can direct you to other means of communicating with young people which we don't know about)
That way you can get in touch with young people around your age with your Mom's approval.
As I am sure you know, the internet can be a terrific means of learning, communicating and it can also be quite dangerous, especially for young people.
Sorry to sound like a Mom, but that is what I am. My daughter is only 2 years old and she has a long way to go before she turns fifteen.
I hope she is able to write as well as you and express herself as wonderfully by then.

Take care and Best of luck,

Topol's Mom

-Topol means "chubby" in Persian!

Deleting comments

Only she can access her comment by clicking on the edit, below her comment and delete her e-mail address. Also, a moderator can access anyone's comments and delete that part for her.

I have flagged her comment and requested that they only remove her e-mail address due to safety concerns. Hopefully, JJ or one of the moderators will read it and make the necessary changes.

Some advice.......

by Natalia Alvarado-Alvarez on

I think it would be best if you did not give out to much of your personal information on the web-site. Especially, your e-mail address. I just do not want to see any of you harmed.

You can access each others Bio page by clicking on your (blue) name. It will take you straight to each others Bio page, there you will find a contact tab that you can access to send each other your personal e-mails.

This way you can read the messages first and  decide if it is safe to communicate further with whomever messages you.

 Best,

Have any questions?

by hco22 on

Hey there! I'm a 1st generation Iranian-American, who is 13 years old. I'm also on this site to learn more about the culture of Iran, though both my parents are still trying to teach me about it. I think its wonderful that you want to learn about your culture, and get to know the backround. If you have questions about it I will answer what I can! Thanks :]

Re: Hello Hello!

by lelakoopal on

That's a great idea! I have been bugging my mom to let me go to Iran, but all of my family has left. =/ My grandpa was a general under the Shah when he was still in power, so when he was overthrown my Maman, him, my dad, and my two aunts left. I'll try to talk my dad into taking me when I visit him next summer, though :)

Hello Hello!

by Setiz (not verified) on

You are so "naaz" (nice). Now that everyone is making you suggestions, I make two too: (1) if you have a close relative in iran, you may want to take a trip to iran (with preparations of course so you will not get stuck there due to lack of proper paperwork, permission to exit, exit visa, etc.), and don't forget to visit esfahan & shiraz too. (2) Learn the language, no matter how basic.

Keep us informed of your (life) journey too please.

Khosh baashi (be happy).

Lela, I knew a girl like you who was looking for her roots and on her way, she discovered another side of herself and a whole new world.

I think you should start by finding and connecting to Iranian-Americans in your area. Here are a few links that you may find useful:

//iranianamer.meetup.com/

//www.iranianalliances.org/home.html  (I think this is the same one that Azadeh provided)

You may find this an interesting read:

by samsam1111 on

Because You already have been &  continue to be an Irani Persian.1st thing you need to do is pick up a translated version of Shahnameh .and read 1 page every evening.Next you need to buy your mom a Persian cook book and you are done. I promise you that you will be more Persian than most of the folks who speak the language fluently. although read my blogs about history and culture in english and many other sites on the net...Cheers and welcome.
