Rafsanjani Calls For An "EMERGENCY" Meeting Of The Assembly Of Experts

If true, this is a bombshell. Appearing on CNN last night (video at Nico Pitney link below), Iran expert Reza Aslan reported this:

"There are very interesting things that are taking place right now. Some of my sources in Iran have told me that Ayatollah Rafsanjani, who is the head of the Assembly of Experts -- the eighty-six member clerical body that decides who will be the next Supreme Leader, and is, by the way, the only group that is empowered to remove the Supreme Leader from power -- that they have issued an emergency meeting in Qom.

Now, Anderson, I have to tell you, there's only one reason for the Assembly of Experts to meet at this point, and that is to actually talk about what to do about Khamenei. So, this is what I'm saying, is that we're talking about the very legitimacy, the very foundation of the Islamic Republic is up in the air right now. It's hard to say what this is going to go."

Aslan's scoop is also reported by the Farsi-language Rooyeh .

Right Mehrdad joon! People just want AN out! nothing more! that's it!

They wholeheartedly want the Islamic Republic to stay so that later on the IRI regime officials, in ample time, take care of each and evey single one of them their own usual way.

wishful thinking

by Bavafa on

I think this is a wishful thinking on our part for the Islamic Regime to end and it is mostly the wish of Iranians living outside of Iran which is totally irrelevant.  As any one looking at any of the reports coming out of Iran, the current uprising is not against the Islamic republic and only against AN.

very interesting news. The outcome of this meeting will be critical. It seems that this power struggle and tug of war between the political parties is reaching a new height. Though, Rafsanjani and his sons are in essence bunch of thieves, but I think at this time, they will be better for this nation than the current murderers holding power.

Wondering...

why nobody is calling for the elimination of a 'velayat-e faghih' from the system all together. It seems the most logical thing to demand now that the population is mobilised and it would bring us closer to a real democracy.

Though I didn't hear it anywhere else.

I hope Rafsanjani is not our "Supreme Leader". That would really suck!
