'Islamic Jesus' hits Iranian movie screens

It seems that some Iranian filmmakers are turning to Epics to make political-philisophical statements on the so-called Clash of Cilvilizations and offering their views on History. The TV series Zero Degree Turn was proposing to revisit Iran's role during WWII and in the controversial Holocaust debate triggered by Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Iranian actor Ahmad Soleimani Nia plays the role of Jesus during the making of the "Jesus, the spirit of God", by Iranian film director Nader Talebzadeh, in Tehran, in 2007. A director who shares the ideas of Iran's hardline president has produced what he says is the first film giving an Islamic view of Jesus Christ, in a bid to show the "common ground" between Muslims and Christians. Now it seems that they want to tackle with the sources of Christianity. Rather than comment on a film I have not seen in its entirety be it Zero Degree Turn or the upcoming film on Jesus Christ, I prefer to simply submit to your own judgment the pertinance of the following article by Farhad Pouladi for Asia Times.

'Islamic Jesus' hits Iranian movie screens TEHRAN (AFP) A director who shares the ideas of Iran's hardline president has produced what he says is the first film giving an Islamic view of Jesus Christ, in a bid to show the "common ground" between Muslims and Christians.

Nader Talebzadeh sees his movie, "Jesus, the Spirit of God," as an Islamic answer to Western productions like Mel Gibson's 2004 blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ," which he praised as admirable but quite simply "wrong".

"Gibson's film is a very good film. I mean that it is a well-crafted movie but the story is wrong -- it was not like that," he said, referring to two key differences: Islam sees Jesus as a prophet, not the son of God, and does not believe he was crucified.

Talebzadeh said he even went to Gibson's mansion in Malibu, California, to show him his film. "But it was Sunday and the security at the gate received the film and the brochure and promised to deliver it," though the Iranian never heard back.

Even in Iran, "Jesus, The Spirit of God" had a low-key reception, playing to moderate audiences in five Tehran cinemas during the holy month of Ramadan, in October.

The film, funded by state broadcasting, faded off the billboards but is far from dead, about to be recycled in a major 20 episode spin-off to be broadcast over state-run national television this year.

Talebzadeh insists it aims to bridge differences between Christianity and Islam, despite the stark divergence from Christian doctrine about Christ's final hours on earth.

"It is fascinating for Christians to know that Islam gives such devotion to and has so much knowledge about Jesus," Talebzadeh told AFP.

"By making this film I wanted to make a bridge between Christianity and Islam, to open the door for dialogue since there is much common ground between Islam and Christianity," he said.

The director is also keen to emphasise the links between Jesus and one of the most important figures in Shiite Islam, the Imam Mahdi, said to have disappeared 12 centuries ago but whose "return" to earth has been a key tenet of the Ahmadinejad presidency.

Talebzadeh made his name making documentaries about Iran's 1980-1988 war against Iraq, an important genre in the country's post-revolutionary cinema.

But such weighty themes, and his latest film on Jesus, compete with domestic gangster thrillers and sugary boy-meets-girl love stories, the movies that continue to draw the biggest audiences in the Islamic Republic.

The bulk of "Jesus, the Spirit of God", which won an award at the 2007 Religion Today Film Festival in Italy, faithfully follows the traditional tale of Jesus as recounted in the New Testament Gospels, a narrative reproduced in the Koran and accepted by Muslims.

But in Talebzadeh's movie, God saves Jesus, depicted as a fair-complexioned man with long hair and a beard, from crucifixion and takes him straight to heaven.

"It is frankly said in the Koran that the person who was crucified was not Jesus" but Judas, one of the 12 Apostles and the one the Bible holds betrayed Jesus to the Romans, he said. In his film, it is Judas who is crucified.

Islam sees Jesus as one of five great prophets -- others being Noah, Moses and Abraham -- sent to earth to announce the coming of Mohammed, the final prophet who spread the religion of Islam. It respects Jesus' followers as "people of the book".

Iran has tens of thousands of its own Christians who are guaranteed religious freedoms under the constitution -- mainly Armenians, though their numbers have fallen sharply since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Every Christmas, Ahmadinejad and other officials lose no time in sending greetings to Christian leaders including the pope on what they describe as the "auspicious birthday of Jesus Christ, Peace Be Upon Him (PBUH)."

In this year's message, Ahmadinejad said that "peace, friendship and justice will be attained wherever the guidelines of Jesus Christ (PBUH) are realised in the world."

Shiite Muslims, the majority in Iran, believe Jesus will accompany the Imam Mahdi when he reappears in a future apocalypse to save the world.

And Talebzadeh said the TV version of his film will further explore the links between Jesus and the Mahdi -- whose return Ahmadinejad has said his government, which came to power in 2005, is working to hasten.

Shiites believe the Mahdi's reappearance will usher in a new era of peace and harmony.

"We Muslims pray for the 'Return' (of Imam Mahdi) and Jesus is part of the return and the end of time," Talebzadeh said.

"Should we, as artists, stand idle until that time? Don't we have to make an effort?"

I think Iranian are very polite and respect other people's faith and belief. Jesus is my role model and NOTHING is taken away from the character of Jesus if we say "he is NOT son of God". Take a look at the movie and see how beautiful Jesus has been portrayed. AND, compare it to what some HIGH CLASS European lawmaker does to the character of Muslims' prophet IN THE NAME OF DEMOCRACY!

Through civilized (not democratic) dialogue and cultural exchange, we can resolve all world issues.

You did not answer my arguments. The question was not whether religion should remain private or not. The question was whether or not religion is the cause of misery and death, and I argued that every view and ideology in human history, including the concept of democracy and liberty, can be used to justify crimes while serving particular interests. That doesn't mean that the ideology or view itself is corrupted and should be destroyed!! And it is wrong to make generalizations and take average people accountable for the crimes committed by the name of their ideology. Think about it instead of responding with one liner slogans.

You insulting me instead of arguing against my points, only shows you lack of education and weakness of character.

PC: You're absolutely right. This movie was made for domestic consumption of the sheeple who don't know the first thing about Christianity except what they've been taught by the mullahs. Most of Quron is copied from the Old and the New Testament thus muslims' belief in revelation of Jesus Lord, bible and Torah.

Commonality?

by programmer craig on

"By making this film I wanted to make a bridge between Christianity and
Islam, to open the door for dialogue since there is much common ground
between Islam and Christianity," he said.

So, he wants to build bridges between Chrsitains and Muslims by claiming some of what Christians belive is true, but not the most important parts. Jesus isn't the Savior, and he didn't die for our sins.

How could Christians ever believe there is commonality between Muslims and Christians, when Islam dismisses the core tenets of Christianity out of hand? Such claims almost seem comical. It's like telling a Jew that most of his beliefs are correct, except the part where Moses delivered Jews from bondage in Egypt and led them to the promised land. And the part about bringing the 10 commandments down from mount Sinai.

From a Muslim perspective, there is some commonality between Chrsitianity and Islam. But only because the Quran explicitly endorses the Bible, and because the Quran incorporates some of Christian scripture. But since the most important parts weer either alterred or omitted, that commonality is an illusion.

This movie will do the exact opposite of "building bridges", should Christians actually watch it. I have no idea how it will effect Muslims, but it's a truly bad idea to market this as some kind of "outreach" to Christians :)

This kind of shameless lies and propaganda against other individuals is exactly what the likes of Falahian and Shariatmadari do. This is called "parvandeh-sazi". At least they do it for the Iranian intelligent service, not for Bush's Home Land Security.

If God Forbids people like you ever get to power in Iran, not only they will do the same things (if not worse) as the I.R, they will do it at the service of foreigners.

You said: "all religions are backwards and they have caused great deal of misery to mankind."

Statements like "all regions are backwards..." come from lazy minds who want to take the easy way instead of taking the time to study and analyze the role of religions in human societies.

If all religions are backwards and have caused a great deal of misery to mankind, then what about other ideologies by the name of which people have been killed?! Millions of people have been killed by the name of communism by the hands of people like Stalin, Pol Pot...etc Millions of people have been killed by the name of Nationalism throughout history, including the 60 millions of WW2! Millions of people have been colonized and slaved by the name of modernity and culture! Millions of people have been killed by the name of Liberty and democracy, including the recent war in Iraq! Millions of people have been beheaded exploited, jailed and tortured by the name of Monarchy!!

Does that mean that everyone who subscribes to any of these ideologies is contributing to the misery of mankind?!! Should every leftist or patriotic or liberal or monarchist individual be stigmatized by the crimes committed in the name of communism, nationalism, liberty and monarchy?!!!!! If not, then why are religious people an exception?! Why should 1 Billion Muslims, who are average human beings like you and I, be put in the same basket as the Talibans and be stigmatized with every crime committed by anyone is the name of their religion?!!

And why should WE be so naive and close-minded to close our eyes to all the political, social and economical factors involved in human behaviors and blame everything on the "Quran" or the "Bible"?!!

So, you be real!!

Ali you say, "It wasn't the "MUSLIMS" who destroyed the status of the Buddha but a small group of politically motivated drug smugglers called the TALIBAN".

All these group such as Taliban, Sunni, Shaii - actually go ahead and come up with a new name for your group that believe what the true Islam is - they all are the derivatives of Islam with its book Quran. You and your group will not fair well either.

This Islam ideology is just corrupt. To make you feel better, all religions are backwards and they have caused great deal of misery to mankind. Religions have killed more humans than natural disasters.

How old are you Ali? Be Real

Anonymous 222 is a moron. Christianity is mythology as is Islam. Following any of that crap only means you have a feable mind of a 2 year old. Let this dime store Scorsese make his stupid film. I'm sure it would never hold a candle to that cinematic epic by that genious Mel Gibson but what the hell Everybody needs an artistic outlet. Next I'll be believing that I'm a product of some incestous affair between Adam and Eve. Christ died for my sins and the imam Mahdi will be returning during judgement day. I'll go play with my snakes and anonymous 222 can go speak in tongues.

I wonder what would happen

by Anonymous222 (not verified) on

I wonder what would happen if the roles were reversed, if some Christians made a movie about Mohammed in a bid to show the "common ground" between Muslims and Christians. And the theme of the film is that Muslims are simply wrong in their views of Mohammed.

Okay, I don't wonder. I know exactly what would happen.

I don't think the producer knows that stating to Christians, your Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, is just a prophet, and never died for your sins, kind of takes the wind out of the sails that all Christians take for granted. It makes far more sense to tell the producer that Mohammed was never a prophet unless he was one of Satan's, and as far as I understand, Satan didn't have any prophets, just a whole lot of followers.

There is no common ground between Christians and Muslims.

Jesus was about forgiveness and free will.
Mohammed was about vengenance and submission

Moslems are hypocrites ... Moslems do not hesitate to kill a person if that person's pupils name their teddy bear Mammad, however, they can go about their merry way and do as they wish with other religions (i.e. do you remember how MOSLEMS blow up Buddha statues?)
