Bush's Iran diplomacy is a sham; admits US Defence Secretary

In a moment of candour, Robert Gates, the US Defence Secretary has admitted albeit implicitly that the Bush administration's diplomacy towards Iran has long been a sham: "If there is going to be a discussion, then they need something, too. We can't go to a discussion and be completely the demander, with them not feeling that they need anything from us," he stated in his address to a group of retired American diplomats on May 14.

Lamenting also that the US may have squandered an opportunity to engage with Iran under President Khatami's government, Gates' striking assertion echoes the confession of several European diplomats to Asia Times Online on 7th September 2005. For the first time, they admitted that the package offered by the EU-3 in their so-called negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme was "an empty box of chocolate” and that “there is nothing else we can offer." The diplomats went on to say: "The Americans simply wouldn't let us."

In 2004, Gates co-authored the Council of Foreign Relations' report "Iran: Time for a New Approach," which rejected that Iran is on the verge of another revolution and called for the United States to reassess its long-standing policy of non-engagement with the current Iranian government. He was later a member of the Iraq study Group, the US Congress' bipartisan panel, whose report in December 2006 strongly recommended direct dialogue with Iran.

The tacit but honest admission of the insincere nature of the US stance on Iran in Gates' speech on Wednesday was once again confirmed on the same day by the US response to the Russian Foreign Minister's statement on how to tackle effectively the conflicts in the Middle East. Sergei Lavrov called on international powers to offer security guarantees for Iran in order to help resolve all problems in the region and the crisis over Iran's nuclear programme.

The White House immediately rejected this call. Spokesman Gordon Johndroe simply retorted: "Security guarantees are not something we are looking at the moment," exposing yet one more time the administration's unwillingness to change its failing agenda for regime change and instead pursue a sincere path for peace.

President Bush's highly inflammatory, threatening and hypocritical rhetoric against Iran in his address to the Israeli Knesset on May 16 provides the strongest evidence yet for his real objective. By making a comparison with the Nazi Germany and warning against appeasement, his speech was designed to destroy peace efforts and justify military action against Iran.

Ironically termed "diplomacy", the US instigated sanctions against Iran are part of a plan to frustrate meaningful negotiations in order to portray violent aggression as a viable alternative to the public.

The Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran (CASMII) calls on the European Union, Russia and China to resist the Bush Administration's war drive through the United Nations Security Council.

CASMII echoes the appeals of the international community and leading experts in demanding immediate and unconditional US negotiations with Iran.

Sorry buddy, you should know better whose words are worth how much.

It was not Samsam1111 who provided the link but proudly anonymous. Yes give us all of your information about Hassan Daioleslam? Else nothing he says is worth a cent?

Samsam - you provided a link by Hassan Daioleslam!

by Anonymous-2 (not verified) on

Have you done your background check on who Hassan Daioleslam is? Why don't you provide us with the information you have about this guy, as he is the main person who is accusing all of these organizations as being IRI Agents.

If we want to provide credible information - we should know about the person making such allegations; shouldn't we?

First let's look at the content of the article!

by Anonymous-2 (not verified) on

What CASMII is saying is the truth; and all information is available from multiple sources to prove their statement. In fact if anyone would bother to do their own research and follow the events which have unfolded on or about the same time that the saber rattling about Iraq started, it became obvious that the next target was Iran. It was their writings which prompted me to do my own independent research about all the accusations against Iran by the U.S.

Second of all I do know some of the members of CASMII and I can assure you they are one group who is not receiving nor has it raised funds from any source both foreign governments, lobbyist groups, nor the IRI. They have been quite adamant about this and so are their members. Yes, it might seem to some why are such groups using their own personal money, what interest do they have - the answer is simple they love their mother land and hate hypocrisy, false accusations, disinformation, misinformation; all pretexts to turn Iran into another U.S. client state.

In fact because of lack of funds, as you may have noticed they can't advertise in major media outlets, nor do they hold any fund raising events. This organization has not hidden the name of their members, board members, their strategy and objectives - it is all in the open for all to see and check them out;
unlike so many pseudo organizations who don't provide any information about their members or their agenda or strategy.

Furthermore all of their board members are all highly educated, scholars, engineers, scientists, physicians, foreign policy experts who have organized CASMII for one purpose to prevent any harm to come to Iran. Some people ask what have you guys been doing for Iran sitting here in the West, well most of these people are the ones who are taking action on behalf of the Iranian people, and trying to educate the world about Iran; in all areas and they have taken steps to help the people of Iran. Just because they don't advertise it doesn't mean they are not doing it. But you should definitely take a look at their website and do some real homework before you jump to wrong judgements.

If anyone has any doubts why don't you contact them and ask them your detailed questions.

Do anyone of you have any problems when an organization who advocates no sanctions and no military intervention in Iran? This is their basic mission. Any true loving Iranian I would hope agrees with this. I sure do, and I am not a member of any organization.

Being a professor in London makes him independent?

by samsam1111 on

My dear Irainian Elitist I do not support anyone bombing my country however I support political sanctions on regime personell at global level.I believe our sacred land must be sterlized from this alien virus called the "Pan Ommah" which exercizes social&economical apartheid on Iranian nation for the benefit of the rest of the foreign "Ommah".

And thank you Mammad for your biography of one of these volunteers but my question was his direct or indirect connection to the regime. Mr Pirooz Mojtahedzadeh is a professor and head of Eurocivic in London and yet nonofficial mouthpiece of the regime .In fact there are hundreds of so called Doctorates who immigrated to the west for further studies, funded via regime and prefered to stay for good,I won,t name names but you know who.Alien occupation regime has many faces representing it outside Iran from well dressed dubai bussiness men&women to non hejab wearing women sympathizers(connected to "Dubai type iranis") ,,from youge basijii daneshjoo bourcieh to families of it,s cultural &diplomatic attachees. I give you an example:

Let,s say my brother in Iran deals with sepah logistics and get big contract from the regime and is very well off and helps me out with a ton of cash every so often.Am I inclined to support this regime eventhough I am not personaly connected to it?..I know of hundreds of Irainians in Canada who are connected to the new rich class in Mullah Iran...who do you think they sympathize with Democracy in Iran or protection of the regime?

Mammad agha! Not so

by proudly anonymous (not verified) on

Mammad agha! Not so fast!

First of all, calling yourself Mammad and posting stuff under the same name makes you no less anonymous than Samsam1111 or any other obscurely named, registered or non-registered commentator, including myself! So cut this nonsense about anonymity. Anonymity is a right, and not a privilege, that I like you and Samsam1111 choose to exercise here.

Second, counting yourself among close friends of Abbas Edalat immediately disqualifies you as an independent commentator. Also forcing his title of Professor, down the throat of Samsam1111 and trying to legitimise Edalat's activities by repeating his academic title and his association with Imperial College, make your arguments no more than a pack of slogans aimed at suppressing legitimate criticism.

Third, Samsam1111 has asked a number of sensible questions that you, as a CASMII supporter, refuse to answer. Instead you hide behind the same nonsensical argument of anonymity and prefer to silent your opponents by trying to stun them with dazzling titles and names! How pathetic! What are you and your CASMII friends afraid of? As they say in Farsi:
"ou ra keh hessaab paakast, az mohassebeh cheh baakast?"

And as for Abbas Edalat, without going through his political associations in the past and the conditions under which he was given a professorship at Imperial, I only expand on your own assertion, in his defense, that he has "paid" for hundreds of villages in Iran to be computerized — "ozre bad tar az gonaah!!"

If we accept why you say as truth, we must equally accept that in Iran there is so much freedom that an "outsider" — allegedly being Edalat, can cut through the regime's restrictions on Internet access and with his own money install computers to allow village boys to have free access to the world outside of Iran? If this much freedom exists in Iran, then why we keep hearing people complaining about not being allowed access to numerous sites and blogs, etc. including Iranian.com that was blocked at some point?

But if we agree that there is a regime control over the Internet access, we also must agree that Edalat could not have done what has done without the full blessing of the ruling regime in Tehran.

Samsam1111: About CASMII

by Mammad (not verified) on

Typical of your comments, you are doing your best to cast doubts on what CASMII does.

Full disclosure: I am not, and have never been, a member of CASMII. In fact, I turned down an invitation by them to join, simply because I am an independent person.

As for who CASMII people are, they do not need to answer your questions. You, an anonymous person, demand full disclosure on a organization which is in fact public and acts with utter transparency? You have a lot of nerves.

But, since you asked:

CASMII is led by Professor Abbas Edalat who teaches computer science at Imperial College of London, a most prestigious university in Britain and Europe. His scientific contributions to computer science are extremely well-known. So, his salary is not paid by the IRI, neither does he have any connection to anybody who is somebody in the IRI.

Full disclosure: I personally know Professor Edalat. He is a good friend.

Other members of CASMII are people like Professor Edalat. CASMII in the US also has a board, made of both Iranians and Americans. They are all scientists and professional people. They all do their work on volunteer basis. Nobody picked them for CASMII. Nobody gets paid a penny for what he/she does. Some cannot even go to Iran, because if they do, they'll get arrested. To my knowledge, none is connected to anybody who is somebody in Iran.

This is not the first time Professor Edalat has been involved in something that is good for his native country. He was instrumental in establishing Iran Arts and Science Foundation, an international group that has brought hundreds of computers and other tools for teaching and research to high schools all across Iran, particularly in the areas that are really poor, and has paid to get them connected to the internet.

So, unlike many people whose only "expertise" is making accusations against patriotic Iranians who are against war and sanctions against their native land, but they themselves do nothing for their country of birth, Professor Edalat and his group have done, and continue to do, what they can for Iran.

MEK is a terrorist cult.

Israel and its lobby in the US are intrumental in crafting a plicy for the US that they hope will lead to military attacks on Iran.

George W. Bush is not known as an intellectual, or bright person. His approval rating by the American people is less than that of Richard M. Nixon at the height of Watergate scandal. He is also responsible for the carnage in Iraq and Afghanistan. But, of course, he is very popular among those Iranians who cannot wait to see Iran be attacked by the US.

Satisfied, or have more questions for a public organization, you anonymous man?

Actually McCain will complete his career soon

and that's about it. Warmongers belong in the dustbin of history. Nobody will vote for "100 years" in Iraq. I will do my part and work hard to make sure people remember that phrase.
