For nearly 2 years there have been many heated debates about the presidential election and different candidates on this site. Thanks god the election is over and we now have our president-elect. While I didn’t vote for Mr. Obama, he has earned my respect and the respect of all those who love democracy and the rule of law. As I have stated repeatedly on this site, my concerns about Mr. Obama has been integrity and TRUST. Those concerns, unfortunately, still remain. Many intelligent posters on this site shredded Hillary Clinton to pieces and slammed her as a war monger for a comment she made about Nuclear Iran and praised Obama for his non-violent approach. I don’t know how would they explain Obama’s appointment of Clinton as secretary of state?.

All those who despised Zionism and voted Obama with the hope that his election would mean an end to Israel as a Jewish state, must be extremely disappointed so far. And, there are those who are DISGUSTED with the influence of AIPAC and how their beloved choice is surrounding himself with Zionists. It must be a great disappointment to realize that the Jewish state will survive.

However, my fear has always been and continues to be the fate of democracy and capitalism in this country. Call me paranoid, but, my fears have grown even stronger when my president is surrounding himself with more liberal Zionists. After all, liberal Zionists are the fathers of socialism and even communism. Existence of a Jewish state is no longer an issue as it has never been a real issue. All these barking about AIPAC's influential lobby is irrelevant. The issue is existence of the United States as a properly regulated capitalism. Is the government going to take over our lives? Is this the gradual death of creativity and prosperity?. Are we going to silence the greed and in the process suffocate the drive for betterment?

As for Iran, it should be obvious by now that it would have made no difference who would be elected as president. The one who spoke of obliteration is nominated to be in charge, by the messiah. What is in jeopardy is the liberty and constitution of this land.

Please :

Say NO to “O”bama’s civilian Gestapo force.

Say NO to “O”bama’s censorship of the opposition voice.

Say NO to “O”bama’s socialism doctorine.

So you don't admit to any republican wrongdoing? DREAM ON!

by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on

This isn't a Democrat problem. It's an American problem. America - Republican AND Democrat. Reagan gave freaking arms to Iran for hostages and everyone thought "oh it's because Reagan is tough on Iran." LOL. That's the more cowardly than anything anyone could charge Carter with. Ya'll have selective sight.

Kaveh, you are a courageous man…

by Bijan A M on

How dare you wasting your breath talking sense into this mob?. The election is over. GIVE IT A REST !!!!. as many have advised me. How dare you question anything about our commander-in-chief?

Just be careful, if you make over 250, anyone in the crowd with a weapon has license to kill you on the spot. You have stolen from them. It has been their rights to own the house of their dreams and you stole it from them. How dare you question the lending practices?

Carter is the greatest humanitarian still alive. No one in the history of human kind has had as much influence on the well being of people on this earth. From people in Iran, to Palestinians in Gaza, to everyone in every housing development in the US. He is the man.

Thanks god, while he is still alive, we now have his proxy on board. Humanity shall survive.

We will all sleep well every night because we have as miserable a life as our neighbor.

I definitely believe Jimmy Carter plays a huge part in the current middle east situation, and that his adminstration created the environment for terrorists to operate as they do today.

I don't see how he plays any role in today's economy, other than Fannie and Freddie being formed during his administration. Rush was probably referring to Carter's Community Reinvestment Act.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p1Wc2NFa3w

This C-SPAN video is from 4 years ago. Right in the middle of the boom. Democrats simply did not want to accept that Fannie and Freddie were lacking oversight and they rejected the idea of increasing oversight of Fannie and Freddie.

Hell, even Bill Clinton acknowledges this at the end, despite the fact that he helped create the environment!

I certainly did not mean to imply anything like that. I agree with what you are saying, I just think you don't need to use loaded terms like communism to highlight the real trouble ahead. It only gives these people an excuse to rant about it.

Why don’t you gals give it a break?

by Bijan A M on

I never claimed to be as smart as anyone around here and my PhD is not worth the paper it was printed on when it comes to politics. All I feel to have is a bit of common sense. I am simply your most ordinary guy around the block who has his own fears and views. An illiterate Joe six pack who fears the government would eventually interfere with every aspect of his life.

What is so wrong with me voicing my fear? I don’t have to listen to anybody to form my opinion. This is how I feel. You are free to tell me I am wrong and my fears are unfounded. That’s your opinion and that’s fine.

Thanks Zion for educating me and I really appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. There is no question that I am a total idiot when it comes to politics. But, as a sensitive person and someone who is alert to his surrounding, I am opinionated about my government. That doesn’t mean I claim righteousness. I sincerely appreciate all the comments about patience and giving a chance to the new system. But, why is it a crime to say I am afraid of censorship? What is wrong with not trusting my commander in chief? I respect him tremendously but he has not earned my trust, yet. I truly believe that under his administration the government will have a much more invasive role in my life. Don’t call it socialism. Call it whatever you like. I believe I won’t be as free as it was intended by the constitution of this land.

Thank you Kaveh for your relevant posts. You are a lot more fluent in expressing those points that I could ever be.

And, blue haired, I am sorry for my most ridiculous blogs that you have ever seen. But, what can I say? I am just venting my fears and hoping to share them with anyone who cares. I don’t post to grab approval rating.

Irandokht, take a sip of your 3rd cocoa cup before it gets too cold…..

Thank you all. I hope I am miserably wrong and Mr. Obama turns this nation around without shredding its constitution.

Thank you. I agree that this is a smarter pick than anyone could have thought of.

Everyone here and elsewhere was saying Obama is going to make out with iran and hamas. Obama didn't care about the "American culture". And here he appoints hawky mama HIllary. Pure genius. He not only has her working for him, but he gets to exploit her record on Iran to safeguard himself from any arrogant Iranian mischief.

ALSO KAVEH. I also LOVE that Rush and the REich wing are blaming Jimmy Carter for this economic mess too. It's funny that the Republican administrations have no blame. Nothing. They were just incidental glorious guys, right? F that. IF they had any hint of "oh my god. the country will be in distress. i love my country and i want to help it before it goes down like titanic", they might have lifted a finger to prevent it. Instead, they blame Democrats, Carter and Clinton.

Spare me of your blaming - No party is to blame. Bush is blind

by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on

The fact is, BOTH parties benefitted from turning a blind eye to this. Everyone was getting rich quick and selling these crap mortgages off. Everyone was paying off politicians.

I really think being president to Bush and his pals meant = don't do anything, just blame the last admin. Blame Clinton for 9-11, blame him for deficit, blame blame blame.... blame him for subprimes.

Most of these mortgages happened under BUsh admin and if they had any sense or insight, they would have done something. Fact is, no one knew what the HELL was going on, even the president. But that's nothing new.

I'm also somewhat confused

by free legal advice (not verified) on

I'm also somewhat confused by Obama's appointment of Hillary, given their foreign policy differences. All I can think is that he's confident that he's ultimately the boss and she will do as he says. In that case, he won't have to worry about her going against his policies and she will be neutralized for the next presidential election. It's not the easiest choice he could make, but maybe his calculations say it's the smartest one.

Have a seat. Bring the bottle of sherry. :-)

Subprime mortgages were indeed the result of Clinton administration policies. Franklin Raines started the process of shifting losses on the balance sheets so that he and other execs could get nice fat bonuses.

He walked away with $100 million. Another exec walked away with $75 million.

The guy everyone loves to hate, George W. Bush, in fact, recommended an overhaul of the way Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae conducts business. It called for minimum capital reserve requirements and greater oversight of their respective portfolio management operations and preactices.

This overhaul was recommended in 2003.

The Democrats told him to shove his overhaul.

To put it in perspective, the median price of a house in L.A. back n 2003 was $320K. Of course in the Westside and the Valley it was higher. Values peaked to over $600K before freefalling to where they are now, which is around $350K.

During that time Fannie and Freddie built this enormous portfolio that we all now know is worth a fraction of the paper it's printed on. Let's not forget the companies who traded mortgage backed securities, but Fannie and Freddie are the two biggest players.

Say what you will about GWB. He's this, he's that. He said he was looking for WMDs but there were none. (There were. Saddam either used them all or otherwise disposed of them very effectively).

But it appears that he saw writing in the wall (or had someone read it to him, if that makes you feel better) and tried to take measures to prevent a bad situation from getting worse.

Shame on him for not growing a pair and calling these people out.

"government involvement is the reason we got into this mess"

<pats Zion on head> Yes dear, that's EXACTLY why. Uh huh! Deregulate more! All those evil liberal sub prime mortgage companies and banks are to blame. All I ever needed to learn I learned from Rush Limbaugh and National Respew Online.

A few points

by Zion on

Thanks Bijan for a thought provoking blog, one of the very few lately. I agree with your main point, but I think you exaggerate a bit. Obama is no communist and US won't be turned in a socialist state so easily. However he, and his fan base, are ideologically charged enough that given the critical financial and security situation today, they cam manage to do immense harm. Much more than in ordinary situations, and that is a problem. The point is his approach is simply wrong. Government involvement is the reason why we are in this mess today, and his ideological zeal for it will definitely make matters worse. The financial crisis has nothing to do with capitalism and free market economy. Quite the opposite, its roots go back to the stupid demand that people should own homes, more than what the free market correctly balances things. SO government was brought into this, and ultimately this is were it lead to.
The question is, how bad would it get before it is realized we are in the wrong track?

PS. by the way, I'm sure you know Communists hated the Zionist movement. From the very beginning. :-)

by Kaveh Nouraee on

Bijan, you're honestly wasting your time trying to convince any of these liberals that your position as any validity. They're convinced that Republicans, conservatives or any people who are rich are the anti-Christ. They think that higher incomes should be taxed at a higher percentage than lower incomes. They don't understand the concept of capitalism or a free-market economy. They don't understand that such an an economic system is cyclical and "trickle-down" by design. They don't understand that this "recession" is a bunch of BS and that Phil Gramm was absolutely right when he said it is all in the mind.

Everybody was happy as hell when they had all of this real estate equity that they were taking out like their house was an ATM. But no one wants to accept responsibility or accountability when it's gone and they realize they're ill-prepared for it.

Bijan, the liberals are going to blame Bush until they're blue in the face. And if Obama encounters any difficulty in his presidency, it will be the Republicans who are blamed, despite the fact that both houses of Congress hold a Democratic majority.

Give the man a fair chance. I hope that he changes his mind and nominates Bill Richardson for the State Dept instead of Hillary. If Hillary were to become Secretary of State, that would be Obama's first big mistake.

I was going to congratulate you Bijan for having improved your style of writing. I didn't see the usual passive-aggressive approach this time. Then again since he won, I guess that would have been a moot point.

What do you expect when you write a blog? For us to pat you on the back and offer you a glass of sherry? You write some of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. If I say NO to Obama should I say yes to Bijan? samsam1111111111111111111111111? George Wanker Bush?

You are a typical right winger and you have been trained in your thinking by Rush Limbaugh, Sean hannity and probably others on that station you listen to.

They just tell everyone to be afraid and worry. They offer NO solution except buying guns, never aborting babies and letting the Pope and Reverend Evangelical of the moment into the government.

Oh and don't you dare tell me what Rush says everyday which is "let capitalism fix this. government choke itself in the tub." That is exactly what has caused this disaster and devastation in America today.

I'd be more worried about all this war spending and borrowing from communist countries than I am about "O".

Why don’t you all chill out….

by Bijan A M on

I didn’t know it was against the law to express my fear. Did I say anything about democrats or republicans? As a citizen of this land I just expressed my concerns about trust and my fear of this nation falling in the grasp of socialism.  It has nothing to do with the party affiliation. I have been a life long democrat. But, what has that  got do with what I posted?  I just screamed that I am afraid we are headed for socialism. Be it Bush and a lot more strongly under Obama administration.

You can post every bit of his speeches that raises emotion level to the point of being ready to give your life for the cause (as I have felt that way many times). But, the fact remains whether you can trust him and whether what he preaches is attainable outside of the socialism framework?. In my opinion, socialism doesn’t have to be practiced the same way it did in the former Soviet or China or Cuba. The doctrine can manifest itself in different forms and have the same catastrophic results (i.e. death of human ambitions).

You can argue all you want about trickle down economics or whatever, it is not a matter of Republicans versus Democrats. I am willing to bet that there are more Democrats who are controlling most of the wealth of this nation. That is not the point. The point is Democracy and PROPERLY REGULATED CAPITALISM.

All I begged for was to say no to silencing the voice of opposition. Is anyone of you denying that possibility? I have seen blogs on this site with many supports that have advocated it. The Zionist liberal, Chuck Schumer has been advocating it. What is so baseless about this fear?

Is it baseless that Obama is pushing for (sorry, advocating), a civilian national security force for policing the nation? Do I have to post clips, and copy and paste articles to substantiate this? How am I biased?

Ms. Irandokht, you were the one who tore Hillary into pieces for her Obliteration comment. How dare you coming out and slandering me? Try a little harder to get your head out of the sea of arrogance you are drowning in. I don’t have to give it a rest. I speak my mind and my fear. You don’t own this space…. I have always been respectful to your candidate and my president-elect. But, that will never stop me from speaking how I feel about him and his policies (at least not in this country, and now).

And Mr. David ET, with all due respect, my post is never too late and has nothing to do with McCain, Palin, Bush, ….etc. It is never too late to express your fear of socialism. You may disagree with my assessment and you may think you are a lot smarter but that in itself doesn’t make you right or invalidate my fear. To find at least one Obama supporter who hoped for an end to Israel as a JEWISH state, you may want to read some of Jaleho’s posts.

George Packer of The New

by sickofiri (not verified) on

George Packer of The New Yorker

Barack Obama’s decisive defeat of John McCain is the most important victory of a Democratic candidate since 1932. It brings to a close another conservative era, one that rose amid the ashes of the New Deal coalition in the late sixties, consolidated its power with the election of Ronald Reagan, in 1980, and immolated itself during the Presidency of George W. Bush. Obama will enter the White House at a moment of economic crisis worse than anything the nation has seen since the Great Depression; the old assumptions of free-market fundamentalism have, like a charlatan’s incantations, failed to work, and the need for some “new machinery” is painfully obvious.
…..
[The Republicans] tried like hell [to discredit Obama]. They called him an élitist, a radical, a socialist, a Marxist, a Muslim, an Arab, an appeaser, a danger to the republic, a threat to small children, a friend of terrorists, an enemy of Israel, a vote thief, a non-citizen, an anti-American, and a celebrity. Obama didn’t defeat the Republicans simply by rising above partisanship, although his dignified manner served as a continual rebuke to his enemies and went a long way toward reassuring skeptical voters who weren’t members of the cult of “Yes We Can.” It turned out that the culture war, in spite of Sarah Palin’s manic gunplay, was largely over.
