2.Einstein thought in terms of world lines in space-time. Such thinking does not lead to the prediction of spin and anti-matter. This is the handicap. Dirac however was able to derive deep quantum mechanical connections to relativity using his relativistic operator formalism, which did not involve space-time diagrams. Feynman was later able to re-establish the utility of spatial thinking with his famous diagrams, but those diagrams are based on particle annihilations and creations that come from Dirac's operator formalism.

3.Your comment regarding the Copenhagen interpretation suggests we are a long way from being able to meaninfully discuss that topic. However, the core issue has to do with the fact that in interactions involving more than one particle (virtually everything) it is not correct to think in terms of a spatial "wave" associated with each individual particle, rather the system should be collectively described by multi-dimensional entity that only reduces to an intuitive picture of a "wave" in the case of a single particle. By the way Einstein was quite aware of this. His understanding of quantum mechanics was second to none; he just didn't think it was the correct description of physical reality. Which it turned out to be. 

4.I like the Ibn Sina myth about him diagnosing the patient by holding one end of the rope while the patient held the other. I passed it on to my daughter when she was little. Her appreciation of Ibn Sina's contribution to medicine has not diminished now that she is studying to be a medical scientist. If anything, the myth encouraged her.

I thought you advocated seperating nonsense from facts. You write:

The field associated with particle is not the cutting edge idea of Hessaby in 1947. Schrodinger brought up the interpretation 20+ years earlier. The more mathematical operator interpretation was due to Heisenberg, and Schrodinger was the one intorducing the infinite superposition of wave interpretation. Also, you sound like hajminator by statements like" Hessaby displays an Einsteinian tendency to think spatially, a handicap in advanced quantum mechanics." What in the world that is supposed to mean?! Even if we stretch ourselves trying to give a meaning to this sentence... If anything, Einstein had a dispute with the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics which is more in line with that spatial exention of wave-particle which Hessaby is referring to, following the Schrodinger interpretation.

A simple suggestion for you to see the "different category" of scientists and their contribution to the "cutting edge" ideas which evolved entire physics. Go to Google scholar. Type the name of ALL of the above scientists, and when you see the articles published by them, then take a look at the number of times the article has been cited and noted by other scientists who took the relevant great ideas further. You'll get the point. Not all good scientists like Hessaby need to be of the caliber of Schrodinger, Einstein or Bohr to be a respected scientist. Why try the "myth" for hard core science?!  Let alone making "rang az rooyeh Einstein parid, noting our greatness!!."

خاطره دکتر

خاطره دکتر حسابی و سیزده به در
یک سال سیزده به در پروفسور حسابی انیشتین، نیوتون، لایبنیتز، پو‌ئنکره و دیگر دانشمندان معاصر و غیرمعاصر را دعوت کرد تا سیزده را وسط چمنهای محوطه دانشگاه پرینستون به در کنند.

وقتی آنها رسیدند دکتر حسابی شروع به درست کردن جوجه کباب کرد. انیشتین محو درست کردن جوجه کباب شده بود و پس از مدتی گفت: این ذغالها خورشید هستند و سیخ مثل زمین است که دور خودش می چرخد. اکنون می فهمم که نیاکان شما ده هزار سال پیش منظومه شمسی را با تقریب خوبی مدل کرده بودند.

بعد از صرف نهار دانشمندان دو گروه شدند و گل کوچک بازی کردند و دکتر حسابی بعد از یک-دو با انیشتین با یک ضربه سهمگین دروازه حریف را باز کرد. در این زمان انیشتین گفت اکنون تفاوت فوتبال تکنیکی کشوری با تمدن ۱۰ هزار ساله را با فوتبال خشک کشورهای تازه به دوران رسیده غربی می فهمم و به ایران لقب برزیل آسیا داد.

عصر موقع خوردن میوه، پروفسور حسابی گیتارش را دست گرفت و آهنگ «اگه یه روز بری سفر» را زد که اشک در چشمان انیشتین حلقه زد و گفت به یاد روزهای اولیه مهاجرتم به آمریکا افتادم و اکنون تفاوت موسیقی فاخر ایرانی با وحشی‌بازی که تحت نام موسیقی در غرب عرضه میشود می فهمم.

بعد از پایان مراسم، انیشتین خواهرش و دکتر حسابی را به یک کلاس خالی برد و گفت دلم می خواهد خواهرزاده ام خون ایرانی در رگهایش جریان داشته باشد.

در تمام طول مراسم بقیه مهمانان (به جز انیشتین) مثل سیاهی لشکرها فقط با هم حرف میزدند و پروفسور حسابی در شان خود نمی دید با کسی جز انیشتین حرف بزند.

Hazhir, in the photo you're referring to, the person standing next to Einstein in front of the tree is Kurt Gödel and not Mahmoud Hessaby. The "official website" is filled with fairly tales made up by Iraj Hessaby.

The infamous "Chaplin's letter to his daughter" seems like historical fact next to this sorry excuse for a memoir. The irony is that the desperation which has led Iranians to take comfort in believing such nonsense serves no other purpose than projecting a pathetic image of them (just imagine Einstein behaving and expressing himself exactly the same, over the top way an average old Iranian male from a typical 2-zaari TV series on IRIB would, walking backward and requiring "aabe ghand"). I personally don't care much, since nationality, while certainly part of my identity, has no special significance for me simply because I had no choice over it. But to the rest of you who would take it very seriously, it'd be wise to be more careful about what you "take pride in" because in the end, it might defeat the purpose (e.g "backfire).

از عجایب ملت ایران یکی هم این است که داستان های خنده آوری از این دست در بین آنان هواخواه بسیار دارد. هر چه ایرج حسابی —که هیچ دستاوردی در زندگی اش به جز «پسر دکتر حسابی» بودن ندارد— ببافد استقبال می شود به شرط آن که عقده ی حقارت ایرانی را سیراب کند و به ملت ایران توهم اهمیتی تاریخی در ابعادی حیرت انگیز بدهد.

جالب این جاست که بسیاری از سایت های ایرانی ای که این مطلب را نقل کرده اند عکسی از آینشتاین و کورت گُدل را هم به عنوان عکس یادگاری حسابی و آینشتاین قالب کرده اند تا جای شکی برای هیچ کس نماند که آینشتاین و حسابی یار گرمابه و گلستانِ یکدیگر بوده اند.

ملت غریبی است این ملت ایران! مشکل از پسر داستانسرای دکتر حسابی نیست. چنین شخصیت های حقیری در همه جای دنیا هستند. اما این که چنین قصه های مضحکی در ایران با خنده روبرو نمی شود نشان از آن دارد که مشکل جای دیگری است. کتاب ایرج حسابی که تمام این مطالب از آن نقل قول می شود در عرض دو سال از چاپ اول به چاپ سی اُم رسیده است. چنین استقبالی نشان دهنده ی عقده ی حقارت عجیبی است در میان ایرانیان، که در قحط الرجال چند صد ساله شان خیره و مبهوت منتظر بر آمدن کسی یا چیزی هستند که بتوانند در دنیای امروز به عنوان یک ملت به او افتخار کنند.

There are at least two photos of Dr. Hessaby and Einstein.  One is this:

and the other one is of the two of them standing next to a tree which I could not find now.  So, in terms of him meeting Einstein, there are at least two documented occasions.

Please also note that on Dr. Hessaby's official site it is stated that he was a student of Einstein and that he (Dr. hessaby) played the violin and met all the other scientists mentioned in the story.  Here it is:

What are your references?
At the age of 25, Dr. Hessaby first presented his theory of infinite extend particles to French physicians. They then encouraged him to learn more with Einstein. He hence participated in a compete with 5 000 other students to become one of the Einstein's students and ended in the 5 first who succeeded the tests.

Your false allegations of Einstein haven't been at Princeton and on the behalf of Dr. Hessaby, just make you a BS maker as Jaleho says. Now, I understand the meaning. Ebi jan, a BS maker is someone who denies the reality by making false allegations.

Einstein had said in 1935 "I am very happy in my new home in this friendly country and the liberal atmosphere of Princeton."

A beatiful, but false, story...

Dr. Mahmoud Hessabi, as one of the people behind the founding of Tehran university among other things, has made great contributions to Iranian science. However, the story above is completely fake and if it is indeed from Iraj Hessabi's memoir, is an unfortunate sign of Mr. Iraj Hessabi's taking advantage of his father's name to sell a book. Dr. Hessabi has mentioned in his personal interviews that he has only had a single meeting with Einstein for 10 minutes; he was never a student of Einstein, despite the claims of his son, and he was never a professor of Princeton university (in fact during the time Einstein was in U.S., Hessabi was teaching and running different departments in Tehran university in Iran); incidentally nor was Einstein a professor at Princeton (rather Einstein was teaching in Institute for Advanced Studies which is in the city of Princeton, but a different institution). Fantastic but incorrect stories about Dr. Hessabi have spread so widely that it is hard to separate truth and false these days, but the story above fails to adhere to the most basic historical facts.
It is important to know great Iranians who have contributed to our country, but building false images purely based in fantasy is only a disservice to real contributions of Dr. Hessabi, and only a service to his son's sales of a book apparently including many lies.

I don't know...perhaps the comment made by the scythian queen was out of frustration and revenge stemming from many years of war with the Persians.  All historical accounts, including those of most of his enemies, recall Cyrus as a benevolent king. But thank you for offering a differing prospective.

I enjoyed the story very much. It is an incredible account of how modest the smartest man who has ever lived was. I am humbled to find out how he honored our culture, history, and civilization.

It is incumbent upon us to share such accounts with our countrymen specially the youth. We have a rich culture upon which a bright future must be built.

Growing up in Iran, I often visited my grandfather who was always immersed in his books and manuscripts. Right above his desk, there was a drawing of Einstein with his flyaway hair and thick mustache. Right beneath the picture, these words written in English: “The more I learn, the more I realize that I know nothing.”

In your earlier comment you touched a very important & unique aspect of the old-Iranic psyche which was to govern nations under one rule yet all a while respecting & letting them keep their ethnic identity/culture & language intact as were the case in Babylon, Egypt, Lydia etc in Achamenead period & later on during Parthian & Sassanid era and their conquest to a large extent (with a few exceptions) . btw* something unrelated , looking at the word brother , reminds me of what Will Durant once wrote that the phrase "Brother Emperor"  that many European kings used to address each other as foes or friends was actualy a Sassanid legacy . you see , in the old days Roman & Greek kings used to address the opposing king or emperor with degrading names of animals in their communications pre or post battle . Yet Sassanid kings starting from Shahpour and Kavad I always addressed their Roman counter part in letter writings or communications as  "Brother Emperor" even during war , in effect injecting class & diplomacy in international relations . So later on this trend catched on in europe..mind you not all letters were friendly such as this one if I rememeber correctly . in one letter from Khosru to Heraclius the Roman emperor, he writes ;

My Brother Emperor Heraclius : While your land enjoyed peace and wealth for 5 years without wars or enemies , my army was busy fighting the Huns of the east on their way to ravage Eran and Roman lands ...... so your peace and wealth came on the count of the blood of my fighting men and the wealth of my nation  .......... So as you observe your majesty is indebted to my army for stopping barbarians before you have to fight them on your land . Hence , I hereby ask you to send my share of your monetary reserves accumulated in the last 5 yrs in the amount of 1/7th of every denarius ..........."

warm and fussy myths

dear ari: there is no arguing that myths and legends can build character and culture. but wouldn't it be better if they are constructed around some core truth?

e.g. your mention of shah abbas makes my skin crawl with fear and terror. that king had a squad of torturers who would literarily eat their prisoners alive, piece by piece, in front of the shah! abbas killed or blinded all his sons, grandsons, cousins, etc; so that after him, there was a huge difficulty to find a safavid to succeed.

even the warmest and fussiest of our myths (cyrus the great) was considered a blood thirsty warmonger, by the nations he fought to conquer. so that the scythian queen who defeated him, cut his head and placed it in a big jar of blood, saying: "now cyrus, drink as much blood as your thirst desires"!

let's say things and propagate myths that fit the profile: "ye chizi begid keh begonje".
