Paris wrapped in green

Photo essay: Green Scroll paraded by Eiffel Tower

by Jahanshah Javid
25-Jul-2009

This was the most amazing political rally. A green scroll 2-kilometers long, made up of petitions from some 190 cities around the world rejecting Ahmadinejad as Iran's president, was paraded by the Eiffel Tower on Saturday. It was a beautiful, unprecedented, historic display of defiance and solidarity. The program began with speeches at the Palais de Chaillot (photos 1-66) and then crowd crossed the bridge, passed under the Eiffel (photos 68-85), gathered by the Wall for Peace (photos 86-102), and finally paraded the scroll around the Champs de Mars (photos 103-200).

Impressive!

Thanks for these great photos, JJ. Khasteh nabaashid!

I loved seeing Iranians so united after 30 years of pain and suffering in the hands of IRI criminals.

The murderous regime must go and Iranians must once again take back their country!

by Anonymouse on

Definately does not feel flat! Very inspiring and effective.  Unfortunately in our neck of the woods (which shall remain nameless :-) there were several Iranians (of the day) who were counter-protesting with their flags flying high. No they were not IRI and were kindly asked to have their "own" protest elsewhere.

Everything is sacred.

Great photos JJ!! What an amazing day it must have been.  How do I get my hands on one of those Roxanna the Riveter posters?  #26.  I love the twist on that.

alirezag

Why?

by alirezag on

Why aren't you burning, looting, throwing rocks and attacking the police like you do in Tehran protests?

I guess Paris is worth more to you than Iranian cities. Also, you know western cops wouldn't let you off with a simple baton on your head. You would be in jail for years.

My most favorite one was no.176. So free, so delicate so effortless!

Thank you for making the effort to be there and for sharing the experience with us.

Awsome! Inspiring! Historic!

by Ari Siletz on

Thank you so much JJ. Dastet Dard nakoneh. It is wonderful to see the green pixels on your digital camera get such a workout. What is breathtaking is the willingness of these diverse Iranians to share the political space, uniting under a single cause: freedom for Iran.

I really needed to see these wonderful photos, because I felt my freedom of speech stifled at today's San Francisco rally. Lion and Sun flag holders worked to dominate the common political space, effectively stealing my voice and presence for issues unrelated to Iran's Green movement. At a Green rally, I had not expected to be reminded so strongly of the heartless theft of our voices in the time when the Lion and Sun flag waved over the land.

Thanks again, and well done. I feel rejuvenated, ready for the next  cry of "Liberte pour l'Iran."

Absolutely magnificient, Jahanshah! What a lot of work has gone into the Green Scroll project, what a wonderful turnout, and what excellent pictures, so telling and uplifting. Thank you for what must be one of the best photo collections ever featured on the site, so moving and telling of the love that bonds Iranians together worldwide.

Thank you all.

P.S. Thank you also for delivering on the promise you made. I spotted the Berkeley scroll from 190-192. Thank you!
