Democracy is a beautiful thing

Photo essay: Voting for Obama and listening to his victory speech

by Jahanshah Javid

I voted for Obama in Arcadia, southern California, and then followed the election count on CNN, culminating in Obama's victory speech. What a great day for democracy! When I first heard him address the Democratic Party Convention four years ago, I was impressed. But when he announced his candidacy, I was convinced he could not get elected in this country. A Black man with a Muslim name? Never! It's great to be proven wrong. Democracy is a beautiful thing.

I'm still puzzled about Joe Liebermann!

by farrad02 on

What the hell was this guy thinking?!! And what did he gain by siding with McCain? Was this a matter of personal friendship with McCain or what? I won't use any stereotypical and racist terms here but what the hell is up with that annoying Grin he carries all the time?!

Democracy

by Walt Whitman (not verified) on

I speak the pass-word primeval, I give the sign of democracy,
By God! I will accept nothing which all cannot have their
counterpart of on the same terms.

Through me many long dumb voices,
Voices of the interminable generations of prisoners and slaves,
Voices of the diseas'd and despairing and of thieves and dwarfs,
Voices of cycles of preparation and accretion,
And of the threads that connect the stars, and of wombs and of the
father-stuff,
And of the rights of them the others are down upon,
Of the deform'd, trivial, flat, foolish, despised,
Fog in the air, beetles rolling balls of dung.

Through me forbidden voices,
Voices of sexes and lusts, voices veil'd and I remove the veil,
Voices indecent by me clarified and transfigur'd.

I do not press my fingers across my mouth,

Last night, I sat with my 8-year-old son while watching CNN and told him all about the history of Blacks in this country. While crying, I told him this land is a good land if we believe in democracy, if we believe change can happen, and only if we believe "Yes, We Can!"

However this is another golden political opportunity for IRI to ruin itself!!

The situation was in a way

by An Iranian Man (not verified) on

The situation was in a way that NO republican would have won it because of economic mess, two illegal wars, the power of establishment such as military and oil companies.
In most interviews, everyone brought up the issue of the economy. If you are out of job, the race does not matter.
In reference to Iran, people must work together to bring a change.
In the U.S., the most free country in the world (listening to American people), it has the largest prison population which is growing by over 6% every year. Billions are spent on police and prison system(s), more than spent on poverty and other social ills.
Other countries must not let the U.S. to steal their resources, start fight between countries such as Iraq – Iran or Iraq – Kuwait wars, we must not let Exxon-Mobile take our oil and gas and use their profits to lobby against us.
Now it is time for the people of the world to come together and stand up to the U.S. establishment.
Enjoy your celebration, but do not expect us to be happy.

ObamaMania

by Mokhlesse (not verified) on

Yes it was a great day, not only for the democracy in US but for all the humanity. US have proven that people can go beyond their prejudice; they have shown that thinking can prevail on our basic instincts. Obama is a hero who has first believed on human values and then succeeded to prove them to the others. I’m not American but it was a great day for me too! I was used to hear bad news and the US presidential election was my ray of hope. I am now convinced that we can change mentalities and that humans can think with their head. I also hope such a wonderful day for the Iranian people who have struggled so longtime for their freedom.
