Car Crash

In memory of Masoud Shojaei

Car Crash
by Setareh Sabety
28-May-2012

Tough skinned senselessness

Comes to a screeching halt,

Holds us in its headlight’s glare.

Numbing needles,

Potion of modern-day gods,

Dry-up sorrow

On the brim of a mother’s eyes,

Drown grief

In a father’s throat.

Young girls muffle their cries,

Men swallow their anger

In unspoken deference for the irreversible.

Frozen in the grasp of sudden tragedy,

We dare not ask,

Only whisper,

The cruel,

Unanswerable:

Why?

As a person who is not into poetry much, enjoyed your poem very much. Also, your presence on IC is being missed greatly though not surprised due to the atmosphere that has been created here.

Dear Setareh, thanks for this touching poem

Your poem is very well written and is about such an important subject. This past weekend, a good friend of my daughter was traumatized by learning about a car crash and death of a young friend. Thanks for sharing your poem.
