Netanyahu talks tough in Obama Iran meeting

Obama insists on current diplomacy/sanctions course

BBC: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told US President Barack Obama that Israel must always remain "master of its fate". Meeting the Israeli leader at the White House, Mr Obama said a nuclear Iran would be an "unacceptable" development. On Sunday, Mr Obama told a pro-Israel conference in Washington there had been too much "loose talk" of war with Iran. Mr Obama and Mr Netanyahu - who are not said to be close confidants and have disagreed on Middle East policy in the past - were due to spend the morning in meetings at the White House >>>

I think when he says "Israel

by hirre on

I think when he says "Israel must have the ability", he means "the US must back us up to 100% if we go to war" and Obama doesn't want to use the war option as early as Israel wants to. Israel is only afraid the US won't back them up the way they plan to...

The New Yorker article on demise of Zionism dream!

by Disenchanted on

"The political corrosion begins, of course, with the occupation of the Palestinian territories—the subjugation of Palestinian men, women, and children—that has lasted for forty-five years. Peter Beinart, in a forthcoming and passionately argued polemic, “The Crisis of Zionism,” is just the latest critic to point out that a profoundly anti-democratic, even racist, political culture has become endemic among much of the Jewish population in the West Bank, and jeopardizes Israel proper. The explosion of settlements, encouraged and subsidized by both Labor and Likud governments, has led to a large and established ethnocracy that thinks of itself as a permanent frontier. In 1980, twelve thousand Jews lived in the West Bank, “east of democracy,” Beinart writes; now they number more than three hundred thousand, and include Avigdor Lieberman, Israel’s wildly xenophobic Foreign Minister. Lieberman has advocated the execution of Arab members of parliament who dare to meet with leaders of Hamas. His McCarthyite allies call for citizens to swear loyalty oaths to the Jewish state; for restrictions on human-rights organizations, like the New Israel Fund; and for laws constricting freedom of expression."

Netanyahu says Israel reserves the right to defend itself?

by farrad02 on

What about the consequences of such an attack. The next day, week or month when IRI retaliates in full force, will you not ask for US and Western countries to come to your aid. If you're going to need the help (which you will almost certainly need) then you will have to (at least) accept that the start of any such conflict has to be decided by the powers who will have to pick up after you and cover for you!

“Israel must have the ability to defend by itself”

by Bavafa on

Why are you dragging us into your warS each and every time?

The American people would be greatful if you stand on your own and defend yourself on your own, now leave us alone.  And on that note, we can use that more than $3 billion a year of free money to spend it on our own people.

'Hambastegi' is the main key to victory

Benyamin

he keeps saying "defence"!!!

by Benyamin on

What does "defence" have anything to do with being "offensive"! there is no threat against Israel! It is Israel that is making all the threats!

hirre

He should have responded

by hirre on

He should have responded something like: "I truly respect and understand your desire to defend yourself, but do not expect us to go to war for you"
