Asghar Farhadi: Oscar Nomination

'A Separation' among foreign language film nominees

Los Angeles Times: Iran's "A Separation," from director Asghar Farhadi, topped the list of nominees for the foreign-language film Oscar early Tuesday morning. Competing against the acclaimed movie about a couple's unraveling marriage at the 84th Academy Awards will be Belgium's "Bullhead," from director Michael R. Roskam, Canada's "Monsieur Lazhar," from director Philippe Falardea, Israel's "Footnote," from director Joseph Cedar, and Poland's "In Darkness," from director Agnieszka Holland. "A Separation" is considered the favorite in the category. The film, which nabbed a Golden Globe last week, centers on a couple who must decide whether to leave Iran to offer their child a better life, or stay to take care of an ailing parent. The film has been universally embraced by critics: It currently has a 99% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. You can read Times Film Critic Kenneth Turan's review here >>>

Scientists vs. celebrities

by Farfromheaven2002 on

The world works differently.  Oscar candidates do not cure cancer, but they provide unlimited funding for scientists to study cancer.  They provide just adequate salary for researchers to work their rats off days and nights.  Even window shopping is not free any more.

We owe our life to naturally talented celebrities, not to scientists who spent their valuable and the most efficient years of their life on books because of their family culture, not their discovered talents.

Cancer patients need more mental health support by entertainers and naturally talented speakers than non-optimized and erroneous medication.  Loved ones devotees usually are absent in one’s unfortunate times.

Really Nazanin?!!

by Anonymous Observer on

Are we so desparate for accomplishments that we have to all pour out of our houses and cheer on the streets if an Iranian film wins an Oscar?!!!  I mean, come on...With all due respect to Mr. Farhadi and his acclaimed film, it's not like we invented a cure for cancer!

Anonymous Observer

Is he going to withdraw the nomination?

by Anonymous Observer on

There's an Israeli film on the list.  Oh...oh.  Isn't this akin to a soccer match where Israel is a competitor?  Just like an Iranian soccer team can't compete against an Israeli team, he shouldn't be able to compete against an Israeli film.

I think that under IR rules he needs to withdraw.

Anahid Hojjati

the only one from the list that is

nominated for original screenplay. That says a lot. Farhadi better prepares his speech.
