Interview with Sadegh Zibakalam, professor of politics at Tehran University

Al Jazeera: The leader of an Iranian opposition group has called for the United Nations to protect a camp of its disarmed fighters in Ashraf, Iraq, after as many as 35 people were killed there in an Iraqi army attack in April. During a rally attended by thousands in the French town of Villepinte on Saturday, Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the Mujahideen-e-Khalq's (MEK) political wing, said that the UN should send monitors to the camp in order to protect the 3,400 people living there >>>

I can honestly see the end in sight. Both for the IR and the MEK. The crazies amongst the MEK will want to go down in a blaze of glory and they love that honourable martyrs death. You can do a Jedi mind trick on them and they will jump off a cliff. This whole business is so dirty that you need a shower writing about it.

Guliani is a dyed in the wool spokesman to AIPAC. So there is nothing "unlikely" about this. We know Israel wants IR gone. The MKO has managed to make a deal with AIPAC. I think at the end Israel will stab MKO in the back.

Meanwhile you are right; they want to use them to destabilize IRI. Once that is done they will hold "elections" in Iran. The MKO will go the way of Chalebi and some other person will come to power.

The real tools here are the MKO. Neither Israel nor Obama will hold their side of the bargain. MKO are born losers. They will go do the dirty work for them. Then be discarded. I don't think USA will have to deal with them; Iranian people will.

I have some bad news for all of you. The MEK is attracting support from some unlikely luminaries such as Guliani

As VPK says Oabam and many congressmen want to see the IR gone. If you hate the MEK, as you quite rightly say you do, what alternative are you going to offer these people? The 'civil disobedience' route is tried and tested. The Gandhi approach will not work with these dyed in the wool terrorists.

Rajavi is a has been and Obama knows this.  However,  the MEK base in Camp Ashraf and its supporters WILL be used to antagonise the Islamic Republic just as the Pentagon and CIA used Bin Laden to fight the Russians in Afghanistan. The Americans are not concerned about their Marxist-Terrorist background so long as they fulfil the purpose to destabilise the regime. But this strategy may end up empowering an enemy which the Americans will have to sort out later such as Saddam or the Taliban. Is it worth the price?

What is wrong with pitting the MEK against the Islamic Republic like a cock-fight?

Not sure what

USA is up to. They should know MKO is not popular. I do know Obama is no fool. Maybe he wants to use them as canon fodder. Maybe he wants to create a fake "revolution" so he can "help" overthrow IR.

Then hold elections which MKO will lose the way Chalebi did. I just can not imagine MKO getting to power under any situations. Therefore something is going on which I am not seeing. At least not clear enough.

I do believe that Obama wants IRI gone. But any real election will likely result in a split between JM; Socialists; various Islamic factions; Secularists; Monarchists; Marxists with next to none going to MKO. I guess at best Obama is playing MKO.

USA is actively helping MEK for a while now.

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

seeking to legtimize them will not make them popular in Iran, where they are very unpopular.  I guess they need to, because up until now they are doing it under the table.

Not only from any attach on their camp by the Iraqi forces, but also and most importantly from the terrorist and traitor leaders in France.
