was a derogatory word made by Racist Arabs  to belittle Iranians.To defend is is silly and just making apologies. I find it interesting that Islamists are fine with anti Iranian racism. However they go nuts when faced with anti-Arab racism. Heck they even call reasonable criticisms of Islam "racist". However they go to any length to make justifications or just deny racism by Muslim Arabs. You have to be consistent but religion blinds them.One rule for Muslims and another for other people.

original meaning of Ajam was "zaban nafahm" or "bisavad". there is a very interesting piece on this by Kasravi. Naderpour as well has some writings on the origins of the term.

the term itself took popularity under the Second Rashidun caliphate Omar as a method to label  Sassanid persians. 

you forget that for centuries the current province of Fars was refered to as Iraq-i-ajami

the whole idea that the term Ajam means "non-arab" is a big historical justification for the centuries old racism that existed in islamic caliphates. most of this  historical lie  is rooted in the works of every pan-arab history textbook you can get your hands on.
