Tissa Hami will be performing in San Francisco Friday night March 12, 2010, at "There are No Gays in Iran" comedy show at Cafe du Nord.
San Francisco Chronicle: We're talking female and funny. Considering the wholesale infiltration of comedians into indie music spaces everywhere, is it any surprise that many watchers see comics as the new rock stars? Add in the estrogen-laced ferocity of a funny woman on a tear, and you've got a veritable invasion of laugh-mining ladies on your hands.
1. Tina Fey
The "30 Rock" star and nicest "Mean Girl" in Vogue has me inking her forthcoming "Date Night" into my Moleskine.
2. Wanda Sykes
After curbing Larry David's enthusiasm, speaking her mind at the '09 White House Correspondents dinner and breaking the woman-of-color barrier on late-night TV with her own show, Sykes recently grappled with health care ("I wouldn't go to a town hall meeting unless I had health insurance") and homophobia ("I didn't have to come out as black") on HBO.
3. Jane Lynch
She's a hoot whether wearing a grimace and a tracksuit on "Glee"; blowing a bit part out of the water as with "The Rocker," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Best in Show"; or even sparring with Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Healthy Choice.
4. Kathy Griffin
The reason her "Life on the D-List" is so mad popular: The swiftest mouth in the West can turn an awkward Mariska Hargitay kinda-sorta-kiss on the usually-cadaver-dead-serious "Law & Order: SVU" into a chortle by telling Hargitay's Olivia Benson: "You're like Ellen, Joan Crawford and Calamity Jane all rolled into one. If you can balance a checkbook, I'll throw in Suze Orman."
5. Marga Gomez
Go, go, Gomez - back in town, snarking about Pink's boob sweat and throwing laugh parties.
6. Maria Bamford
The agile-voiced, self-mockingly skewed comic can dissect a mean hot tub.
7. Tissa Hami
The rising Iranian American stand-up digs into the yuks beyond the protests and sanctions.
8. Margaret Cho
Miss the S.F.-bred polymorphously talented comedian-burlesque performer-vocalist's reality show? Get Cho-self to "Drop Dead Diva."
9. Kristen Schaal
She gives good groupie on "Flight of the Conchords."
10. Mary Van Note
If only Gavin wanted the quirky-neurotic, madly vlogging and non-Suicide-Girl-adorable S.F. comic.
11. Chelsea Handler
Are you there, AA, it's her - the saber-tongued, celeb-jabbing blonde from late-night cable TV. Let's bang - ahem, a gong - for "Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang" at Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium. (8 p.m., Fri. $45.50-$75.50. 1111 California St., S.F. (415)421-8497, www.ticketmaster.com)

by Nazy Kaviani on Sat Mar 13, 2010 08:56 AM PSTThis is what happens when an Iranian woman with brains and an Ivy League education decides to enter the world of comedy!
Last night's show was fantastic! You are sooooo funny! My sons decided to make a rare appearance at an event with me and I know their choice of event last night was because of your name on the ticket! I can't remember when I had laughed so much last! You and the other comedians were absolutely brilliant. Naming you among one of the funniest women in America is only the beginning of what is to come for you and with your uncanny sense of humor and unique voice, you deserve all the good things that are coming my friend!

by onlyinamrica on Fri Mar 12, 2010 09:44 PM PSTToday, 3/12/10, as usual as I tried to visit Iranian .com at work (Giant company) to my surprise, your site was banned because it contains pornographic material. All because of that stupid photo of Nude Mryam. Publishing such a picture that as soon you open the site wasn't such a smart idea. I don’t care if Iranian.com contains material of sexual context, but it shouldn't be on the first page. For couple of days when I wanted to enter the site, I had to look around and make sure nobody is watching and immediately scroll down and miss all the material on the top of the page where that damn photo was. Even at home I had to ask my kids to go away before I could open the site. Do we have to as they say in Farsi " hamisheh bayad goh bezanim"?

by Niki Tehranchi on Fri Mar 12, 2010 09:42 AM PSTHaving chosen one of the hardest paths in show business (as if comedy per se wasn't hard enough, but to compete with the old boys club too and all the implications of chosing a non-conventional career amongst our community), it is so nice to be recognized. What a great honor to be named among these great female comics. I hope that you start getting more and more exposure so that one day you will be a household name too, like Tina and Kathy. Best to you!!!
