by Hossein Bagher Zadeh

by capt_ayhab on

I categorically disagree with the analysis set forth by Mr. Bagher Zadeh.

Saberi's deal had nothing to do with her alleged guilt or innocence, It was an ugly political game that was played with both sides. I am even willing to go as far as claiming that they may have preplanned everything.

USA needed to show that it can influence some elements in IR, and IR needed to demonstrate that they resemble human beings.

One thing that puzzles me thought, I strongly believe[can't prove it though] that there might be a relation between summery execution of Delara Darabi, despite the stay of execution, and appeal hearing for Roxana Saberi.

Both these cases have captured international out cry from all around, at the same time no attention being given to people who are still being held without any crimes committed. If in fact Saberi was a spy, then no way no how IR would have release her. Even the first sentence of 8 years sounds to be way too light for such a grave alleged crime, when considering that people are executed for no crimes what so ever, case example gays and Baha'is. Even USA with all its alleged fair judicial system, would have sentenced a spy for lot more than 8 years.

With so many states in US abolishing death sentence, US can and has sentenced spies to death. One case that comes to mind is case of master sergeant Brian Regan.

In August 2001, Regan was arrested by the FBI at Dulles International Airport in Washington, preparing to board a flight to Zurich in Switzerland.
He was carrying classified documents and contact information for Iraqi, Libyan, and Chinese embassies in Switzerland. His trial began in January 2003, and prosecutors sought the death penalty (the first time it would have been used for espionage since Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed by electric chair in 1953). The following month, he was
found guilty on three counts of attempted espionage, but the jury declined to impose the death penalty. Instead, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole in March of that year.

Dear Areyo Barzan,

You said "If she was really a spy, and she had some secret documents with her. Documents which could have compromised our national security, then........"

What national security are you talking about? The Islamic regime is anti Iranian nation. it is a terrorist regime that hates Iran and iranians. They hate the name nation and changed that to " Ommat-e Eslam". They even changed the name of our national parliament( majeles-e shoray-e melli) to the Islamic parliament( majles-e shoraye eslamy) after the Islamic revolution. How could anyone say spying against these Jihadist terrorist criminals can geopardize our national security?

To Ms Roxana Saberi

by Meehan (not verified) on

Ms Saberi,
I hope you will read this. First of all congratulate you on your release from the Islamic Prison. You spend 6 years of your life in Iran, thinking that you are dealing with a normal country where you can study about peoples culture and write a book. Now you see that you were wrong. I believe that unfortuanately many Iraninans still have a sheep like mentality that need to be herded. Look at some of Iranians who actually believe that you were a spy.Look at millions of people who still vote for the so called presidential elections and other non-sense elections. Look at all the people who revolted in 1979 and actually voted for the "Islamic Republic"(a theocracy) that is still terrorizing them and has been a leader in international Islamic terrorism . You yourself being half Iranian posed for a picture with Khatami under which many students and political figures were executed(Not to mention stoning of women who comitted adultry) I think that the Islamic terrorist regime in Iran is the best that Iran can produce and there will never be an improvement( not in the near future). All this things about past glory that some of us talk and brag aboutabout is all history .Shame on a culture that has to look back for glory but not today.

When the Criminals run our country (Iran)

by Shahrokh T (not verified) on

Friends,
One thing that we need to understand is the people from the leaders down to a simple police force are all criminals. When you pay them, you get out of their jail. The criminals got paid by Carter for $9B to free The American hostages, based on the conversation that Carter had with BBC recently. The same reports showed that many hostages on other places got free with the money that Americans and others paid them. If you have a close relationship with Obama and/or Ms. Clinton, please ask them how much they have paid to free Ms. Sabari.
The poor Iranians whom do not have a passport of other countries are in trouble. I recall, when I was arrested in 1980 by IRI, in Tehran. The head of Eshrat Abad Komite (Akhond Bokai) told me that he will make sure, I never ever get out of Evin alive. Back then I had $1000.00 with me. Later on, some how, I was released from prison. When I went to dadgostari to claim my $1000.00, it was gone so as my papers and documents.

by Yek teer do neshaan (not verified) on

Roxanna Saberi was finally released to plese America, by the same token, Ahmadinejad will not be "s"elected to please America again.

These are parts of concessions Mullahs are giving to America, besides mullahs also want to show the world that in Iran there are real elections and real choices by people and since Ahmadinejad was unsuccessful in his first term and let people down, people elected someone else in his place as it happens in America and the rest of the demcratic world.

Same old shameless nonsense, same old shameless IRI apologists

by Areyo Barzan (not verified) on

Since you guys do not want to face the reality I just ask you one simple question :

If she was really a spy, and she had some secret documents with her. Documents which could have compromised our national security, then what I would like to know is:

Who did actually give her those documents, who was her accomplice and what internal help did she get.

She could not simply have walked into a government office and came out with some secret document. As we all know, now a days one can not even go into a Masjed in Iran just to use the toilet, without being searched both on the way in and on the way out. Unless you are implying that the security of our ministerial offices is actually less than that of an average toilet in the Masjed-e sare Mahal    :-))

So I ask you again, why didn‘t we hear any name of the accomplices. Why didn’t we even get a hint of the nature of information she was passing to the West

You guys are either so naive that you do not know the first thing about spying, or just like your leader you are so arrogant to regard the rest of us as immature children who believe any nonsensical fiction you through at them.

If you have even bothered to ever read any of the history surrounding conducts of agencies such as CIA and MI6, or even read memoirs of a few former spies, then you would know that these agencies are far more experienced and sophisticated, to use some one like Roxana as an spy or get her to carry the actual documents with her. As if we are living in the 19th century.

Haven’t you pepole ever heard of micro films and  hand held satellite transfer devices and other technologies which have made the need for carrying documents either physically or electronically with oneself redundant around 20 years ago?

Come on guys, you should have at least done some research before anticipating in such stupid phoney fictions. In fact you could have come up with a better story only by watching the latest James Bound movie    :-))

For those who are still  lost in the delusion of believing that IRI is acting against U.S interests, or any US administration would actualy give a damn about Iran and our national Interest, I can only erg you to READ. You can start by the book called

“Akharin Talaash ha dar akharin rooz ha”

written by Ibrahim Yazdi who was Khomeini’s right hand man. Read the memoirs of general Huyzer and those of the Last American Ambassador to Iran.

Why are you people so scared of the truth? The only way we can  prevent the repetition of our past mistakes is by learning about our history and knowing our enemies as they are.

US and IRI have been collaborating and benefiting from each others cundoct from day one, regardless of their empty cheep rhetoric.

This whole sad episode was noting but a cheapley conducted show on both sides, in order to enable them to drop their final mask of deceit and for mullahs to be formally welcome into the circle of White House faithful servants and their services  to be fully ecognized.

The rest is a cheaply conducted phoney show

PS: Dear smhb:

Please do not forget Zahra Kazemi, Dariush & Parvaneh Foroohar or hundreds of other IRANIAN bloggers and members of student or labour movements who are still rotting in IRI prisons and are having hearth attract one after the other. Shame on you sir, shame!

She was released because she was humble...

by darius45 (not verified) on

Governments don't just jail people for sake of jailing them. They are either afraid of the person (as they would be for a spy) or they want to punish a person as an example for others to take their lessons (which may explain why we hear so much about Guantanamo bay)

In case of this lady, she apparently had some secret documents, she traveled to Israel (which Iran considers Illegal, just as a US considers a American citizen travel to Cuba), and she worked as journalist without the required permit. So she broke the law.

Iranian government could have justified punishing her, but I think she was released because the Iranian government decided she is too naive to be a real threat. It is an election time in Iran, so this kind of controversy is not productive. And she was smart enough to accept and apologize for her mistake.

I think the author is trying to make a case for his opinions. Unfortunetly, he, like many other writes like him, don't come to conclusions as result of analysing facts. As in this case, the author had his biases and he is simply trying to convience himself of the rationality of his opinions

We are very simple people!!

by 1 Hamvatan (not verified) on

I Swear, We are very simple people (Iranian). We like to play with words and we don't even know what we are talking about. By the way Abarmard تحلیل نه تهلیل, in case you want to know.

THIS IS VERY SIMPLE. THEY PAID MONEY (WHOMEVER HAD THE MONEY) AND THEY LET HER GO. SIMPLE. NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS. In Iran, everything is done with money. All those people who are in jail for nothing, if they pay, can get out. Islamic republic works like a pirates and bandits, they just want to rob people. Very Simple, Criminals are acting like running the country.

First of all its a constant in geopolitics that powers manage to influence each others behaviour. Its relative and conditional. The question for a developing country that has suffered from colonial and imperial domination is not if its influenced here and there by other powers but rather if its able to retain its independence and pursue its national interests.

The IRI has managed that very well during the last 30 years. It managed it well during the king george era and enhanced its influence greatly to the detriment of zionists and imperialists. It has also managed to impose its will on the sole imperial power and her allies in various arenas.

The case of Roxana has yet to be fully clarified but so far based on the available information she had access to high profile people in Iran and she also had classified documents in her posession. Having access to high profile political figures is no crime at all. However copying classified documents is a crime in every country and its usually severely punished. That punishment is also severe in the USA and other western democracies that the author seems to worship.

Was Roxana a pawn in an international game of chicken between Iran and USA? I suspect she was. Was her release conditional and the US has promised to return the favor? Only time will tell, but I suspect the answer is yes.

Does the IRI want to pursue potential improvements in relations with the US? Very possible. Therefore would it make sense to release her and expecting a quid pro quo later down the road including the removal of a potential obstacle to secret or open negotiations? I submit a YES.

Is the judiciary in Iran purely political? Not really, but it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to due process and respect for the rights of the accused. Do we have a political judiciary in the US? The answer is a clear yes as is the case in other western democracies.

The bottom line is that the IRI never tortured Roxana, or Haleh Esfandiari or other prisoners. If they did we would not hear the end of it in the western press. Their defeaning silence is a testament to this.

Roxana was not waterboarded, beaten, raped, forced to be naked in front of sadistic guards and attacked by dogs and etc...... She got caught doing the wrong thing in a country that is very sensitive to its painful contemporary history. A non-nuclear weapon country that is under the constant threat of attack by nuclear armed countries, a country that has been under economical sanctions for 30 years, a country that a war of agression was imposed on it by the same nuclear armed powers and their stooges and yet has managed to retain its integrity and independence, achieve success in numerous areas of science and technology, education, infrastructure, development in the face of all out hostility by the empire. The IRI has become a major power whether you like it or not. Thats a fact be koorie cheshme doshmanan.

I call that a good story. Rather rare in contemporary history.
