Reza Pahlavi at the National Press Club

Choked by emotion

WASHINGTON - JUNE 22: Former Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi choked by emotion when mentioning Neda (a recent victim of the brutal repression by the IRI ) during an address at the National Press Club June 22, 2009 in Washington, DC. Pahlavi, commenting on recent developments in Iran, called for a secular, parliamentary, and democratic political system in Iran.

Islam is the problem

by Mehryar (not verified) on

Islam is the problem and it will ALWAYS be a barrier to significant positive change and justice in Iranian society. Iran cannot currently function as a western-style Democracy because there will always be a tyranny of Islam imposed by the majority on the minority - people of other faiths, agnostics/athiests and rationalists.

Until people intellectually grow up and put aside their adherence to this medieval mythology, otherwise known as Islam, there will not be any chance of legitimate Democratic reform in Iran.

Iran has always been run by autocrats. I find it curious that people give the Shah equal scorn to the mullahs. This is preposterous. The Shah was brutal in some respects but nowhere near the brutality of IRI. The Shah's time in power must also be contextualized through the prism of the geopolitical landscape of the period - namely the Cold War. It doesn't justify the actions of Savak, but it does contextualize the need of a security apparatus in that period. And to dismiss Shah's contributions to the advancement and modernization of Iran is simply childish and ignorant.

I have no problem with a system of government that is a constitutional parliamentary monarchy that is based on strict secular principles. Where the monarch ensures the separation of church and state and has equal power to the parliament, but can be over-ridden with some sort of parliamentary super majority. In this light, the sovereign can prevent the tyranny of the majority - namely, Islam and the way Islam infringes on personal liberty. And there is a legal check on the Shah's power via the Parliament. This can be written into a new constitution. An independent judiciary would enforce the constitution.

This would be 2nd most desirable form of government for Iran - in my view.

The first, obviously being a pure SECULAR parliamentary democracy, based on European models - with multiple parties participating in proportional representation. But as I've said, I believe the deep infiltration of this brutal religion on Iranian society will always prevent this desired outcome.

Who is this guy?!

by Nkminea on

I have never been interested in following up his nationalistic aspirations. So seriously does he have a popular base in Iran? Is he a voice for the freedom seekers marching down the streets right now? What is his political curriculum? I know royalists disappointed in him. Anyway, this is a free country and he is filling up air time for news media. He is talking like we all do except that he has the advantage of national media's interest. I agree with those who say, let's ignore him and focus on the common enemy.

Iranian people in Iran decide for Iran not LA people!

by Anonymous-Daara (not verified) on

In Iran we have a lot of well educated, smart Men and women from true Iranian families(Najeeb-zadegan)that could be the next King of Iran and we do not need to have Reza Pahlavi to represent our land as a Shah. If Iranians want to have monarchy system in Iran they will find the right person themselves.

Not Reza Pahlavie

by Anonymous-ibrahim (not verified) on

If Iranian people in Iran decide to have monarchy in Iran they will choose the appropriate Person for their country and I'm sure Reza Pahlavie has no chance to be the Shah of Iran. Iranians are fed up with people from Qajar family and as we know his mother is from Qajars. Let people of Iran decide for their country.

capt_ayhab

He is hurting the movement[PERIOD]

by capt_ayhab on

With all due respect to supporters of monarchy, more I listen to this man talk, more embarrassed I feel as an Iranian.

#1 I do not get the point of his speech if my life depended on it. Is he having a cabinet meeting or something that he keeps TELLING the press what to do and what not to do? Or is it that he is just reciting the old news to the newsmen? Dude this is press club, they know about the news deal and how it is getting out of Iran. Why are you talking about the obvious?

#2 He says[Let me assure you that it[the uprising] will not die, VE will not let it die]. My question is WHO ARE THESE WE that he is referring to? His army of million man supporters? Who are armed and ready to fly to Iran? Perhaps he is talking about USA and Israel?

#3 Why is regurgitating the neoconservatives line[Nuclear Holocaust?]. Does he think he is helping people on the street by FLAMING the WAR PARTY?

Can someone help me make a sense of this speech? Who are the audience, just the press or people of Iran? and finally what is with the crying sh!t and MY CALENDAR? Who said that old Persian calendar is HIS?

Basically he is kissing the press BUTT and nothing was aimed at people in Iran.

Regards

You hit the nail right on the head!

by Tired of the same old ...!? (not verified) on

Dear Seen-e Sorkh and Disgusted Anonymous,

Thank you for your eloquence in describing the predicament and the dilemma Iran is in today. My colleagues at work have also been asking me the same kinds of questions as to why Iranian people are so difficult to unite? Why haven't Iranians, specially those who have been living in America for the past 30 years, learned the basic rules and principles of democracy? Why haven't they learned that either they have to follow or lead? That, they can't drag on 70 million different directions at the same time! That, they need to converge!

As for the management experience and skills that, Seen-e Sorkh is wondering if the barking Seals in this site can resonate with or understand, I have to say I often wonder myself!? I often wonder if these folks are capable and competent enough to manage and lead their own daily lives let alone that of a group, a community, a city, a state, or a country!? I often wonder if these folks have made any contributions to their surrounding for the betterment of their lives and those around them!? I often wonder if Iranians are capable of generating good and sensible ideas!? I often wonder if Iranians have common sense!?

For the life of me, I don't understand why Reza Pahlavi is trying to save and rescue these miserable backward people from the killers and criminals of the Islamic Republic?

Maybe the late Shahs of Iran should have let Iran to reach the grand status of the countries such as Afghanistan, Albania, and the rest of the model states our pseudo-intellectuals of the past and present have been striving so hard to achieve!?

My conclusion is that these folks deserve the likes of Ahmadinejad and Khamenei! Let the fittest survive!

There is a potential dictator in every on of us

by Rok goo (not verified) on

for those who wrote the comment against Prince Reza Pahlavi.
every one of you could be a potential dictator if you had your chance, look at your own father how he treat your mother and yourself, remember when you were in school how your teacher treated the students(specially in small town),remember when you were doing your 2 years compulsory military service how you were treated by your platoon leader and other senior cadets.
remember how you were treated by your boss and immediate supervisor when you started work in Iran.
and remember when you were visiting a doctor for a simple flu how you were treated(like you were not exist in the room)just wrote you a prescription whitout even bother to check you.
and now you can say which one had a potential to be a real dictator if they had their chances.
although the late king may made few mistakes(who didn't) but he was a real patriotic.
in his time at least we had our own personal freedom and with whom we were socializing, that is the least these young demonstrator wants from barbaric IRI which they were beaten and killed.
one of you referred to black friday in 1977(1357),I'll ask you how many black friday are created by khomeini and his thug since 1979.
now if you are a real freedom fighter focus on future and unity and avoid negativity about the past.

by Hoping for a better Iran (not verified) on

You people can vomit all you want, but this guy is going to be Iran's leader for sure. He's the only person who is able to unite Iranians and guide them to a transition towards democracy.

If you're still wearing your glasses you wore over thirty years ago and mistake him for his father, well that's your problem! The truth is that Prince Reza Pahlavi is a respectable man with not a single political mistake on his record. He has done nothing to harm the Iranian people whatsoever. All he wants is a chance for the Iranian people to have a democratic government with a decent legal system that respects human rights.

So stop being a dogmatic moron and start listening to what the man truly has to say!! With his background and education he could be the best thing that could ever happen to Iran.

He has my absolute and full support!

Focus on Message! Unite Behind a Common Cause!

by Vatandoost (not verified) on

I too was disappointed by Reza Pahlavi's heavy accent and less than stellar communication/presentation skills. I expected a shahzadeh to be more articulate, more politically savvy, less emotional on camera. But moving past these trivial impressions and putting aside ALL prejudice, his message was sensible, relevant and heartfelt. He kept repeating that any discussion of his potential leadership role in Iran is irrelevant and premature. He seemed to have the genuine good of the country in mind.

Bottomline, he used the forum to strongly condemn the present Iranian government and promote a democratic and free Iran. Isn't that what we all want? Shouldn't we focus on this common goal and not waste time attacking some one that in all likelihood will never be the leader of the country? By virtue of being the former crown prince of Iran, he has access to a microphone that we don't. If he is using this privilege to assist (in the slightest) the Iranian people remove Ahmadinejad/IRI/Khamenei from power, I say more power to him, even if his last name is Pahlavi.

Average demonstrator is more articulate than he is. Well, he has zero chance. As much as I appreciate his love for the country, the mollahs would chew him alive! He seems to be a nice guy who is in no way ready to run a city, let alone IRAN! he should just enjoy life here under the US protection.

go back to your suburban home

by MePersianAccent (not verified) on

I dont understand who this guy thinks he is given his own family's past. His grandfather started the entire religious vs. non-religious division in Iran by introducing kashf-e-hejab. Most of our real social divisions go back to that incident where Iranian society was forcefully split into two. He should butt out of this one, no one needs him now, the people of Iran are alive and he has noting to do or will have anything to do with it. He just likes the extra media attention that his mirror at home cant give him.

Given that he has been living in the US for the past 30 years, he still cannot speak English fluently, he cant even give a damn speech properly. so pathetic! I guess his mirror at home doesnt do him good.

Mr. Pahlavi, get a life, find a REAL job. You know the kind that matters... Who wants to listen to you? maybe media critics like Darius Kadivar who have no real understanding of Iranian society, never seen both sides, they cant respond properly to any real arguments except for posting youtube links in response and making stupid jokes. Maybe you guys should hang out more often.

Your speech is only for you, so next time just make your speech to the big expensive mirror (which belongs to the Iranian people) that you have installed in your suburban McMansion and go eat a Big Mac while you are at it.

Def of Realpolitik!

by You know who!? (not verified) on

Dear Mr. Jahanshah Javid,

The comments your patrons have been making are purely of character assassination and false statements. For example, Anonymous77 (apparently, a political science Prof. at Harvard!?) just made a comment to the effect that Mr. Pahlavi should have looked up the meaning of the word Realpolitik in a political science dictionary. Apparently he/she disapproves of the context!?

Well, I just did search the Wiki (see below) and it is perfectly fine and in line with the context of the discussions Reza Pahlavi makes in the video clip!?

"...Realpolitik (German: real “realistic”, “practical” or “actual”; and Politik “politics”) refers to politics or diplomacy based primarily on practical considerations, rather than ideological notions. The term realpolitik is often used pejoratively to imply politics that are coercive, amoral, or Machiavellian. Realpolitik is a theory of politics that focuses on considerations of power, not ideals, morals, or principles...."

Dear Jahanshah, please, If I can make a suggestion that you require to see the school transcript of your contributors prior to submission and to acquire a device to detect nonsense in the content of the posts prior to posting. This would really enhance the quality and substance of discussions around here!

Also, maybe your patrons can enroll in the pre-Algebra courses in their local high school or community college. Apparently these folks have a hard time counting!?

Much Obliged Sir!

PS - In my line of work, we call those devices, Bullshitometer!

Answer to my American co-worker

by Disgusted Anonymous (not verified) on

Several days ago, my American co-worker who has been following Iran election news told me, "if the majority of the people are against your goverment, why don't you people band together and overthrow it?"

I tried to explain that this regime is brutal. He replied, "Other regimes had been brutal too, perhaps some of them even more than the Iranian government, and still people managed to either overthrow them or completely change them."

I told him, but Iranians are divided and have many different views. He answered, "I don't understand. People in all countries are divided. When there is a common enemy, they put their differences aside and look at their common goals. It is simply impossible for a divided people not to have any common grounds when they are facing something like the Iranian goverment."

I tried to explain to him that most of us suffer from a poltical disability, a form of psychological complex related to politics. That this diverts us away from the more important things and instead focus us on indulging ourselves with releiving our anger and hatred toward this group or another. But he couldn't understand this part, no matter how I tried to explain or how many examples I gave.

Today, I showed him this blog and a few other similiar blogs in this site. I asked him to read as many comments as he can. He began reading them with interest. Half way through, he was shaking his head in disbelief.

He asked me, "Who are these people leaving these comments?"

I told him, ordinary Iranian citizens.

He looked at me dumbfounded and paused for a few moments. He then said, "This is so disappointing, why are they doing this?"

I didn't have any answers. But he now understands what I was trying to tell him.

*------------

Shame on you people. Shame on your selfishness. Shame on your self-indulgence. Shame on your arrogance. You are all petty and pitiful Iranians who are big in opinions and ede'aa, but little in content or orzeh.

While our fellow Iranians literally risked their lives for freedom, and some of them even died, some of you selfish and arrogant fools, instead of focusing on the future, are bickering about 50 years ago, a time that is as dead as it can be, or about other similar worthless things.

Shame on you. Look at the mirror and learn why Iran is the country that it is. While you continue with your in-fights, you real common enemy is regrouping to oppress your people for at least another 20 years of your lives, as it had done before.

But you don't learn. You have not changed. All of you still have a hezbollahi side in you despite having 30 years to change, and you demonstrate it to one another with no shame.

I wish it wasn't so. Go cure your desease. It is the first step.

Poor Iran. Now I am beginning to feel Amir Kabir's pain when he wept for Iran's fate.
