Newly-appointed national coach Afshin Ghotbi said he is determined to make his team qualify for the 2010 World Cup. Ghotbi, who was appointed head coach of Iran's national football team last week, will lead Iran in the three remaining matches in the qualifiers. "I am proud of being Irans coach. I know we have little time and we have a difficult job in front of us, but Iran has 70 million fans so we can book a berth in the event," he said:

Good luck to him, the team and the fans.

Oh, and also:
I second the nomination re: Afshin for president!
Talk about pressure!
by choghok on Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:30 PM PDTThe guy is treated as if he has won the world cup for Iran. Wonder how he exits Iran if Iran does not make it to WC.
I do not think that IRI likes popular people so he will be kicked out if Iran makes it to WC I think and replace him with a new coach.

FAT CAHANCE
by Fat-he (not verified) on Mon Apr 27, 2009 07:35 PM PDTGhotbi or No-Ghotbi will make no differene. Our team's chance for going to the 2010 World Cup games is zero! Zilch! Willing to bet my life on that. Today is Monday April 27, 2009 & my name is Fat-he. Write that down all.
Afshin is the MAN!!
by nicksaf on Mon Apr 27, 2009 07:20 PM PDTCongratulations to Iranian football fan all over the world. Please treat this guy like a gentelman, and a horable football couch. He is very sincere and knows what to do. Allow him to do what he asks for.. , He left Iran during his couching era with Perspolis in a rather negative and frustrating mood. His car was attacked and he was threatend after a stupid game loss! I know I would think about returning twice before an offer. He has wealth of experience in couching, just let him do his work and stop the nonsense.
A fan of Iran, Esfahan!
He was a first choice
by MRX1 on Mon Apr 27, 2009 05:06 PM PDTHe was a first choice to become a coach but the night before his appointment became official, Ali Daei with his connections and party bazi got the job. Hope he succeeds though. Although honestly beside the tough games a headof him, working with the people in Iran in charge of football will be a tougher task for him......

True Iranian Of The Day!
by Concerned-Iranian (not verified) on Mon Apr 27, 2009 02:26 PM PDTUnlike anyone else prior to him who collaborated with Evil I.R., This man has true Love, integrity, Honour and also importantly, some serious balls!
During his entire interview here he remained upbeat, positive, honest and most importantly A TRUE IRANIAN by ONLY mentioning the name of IRAN, TEAM MELLI IRAN and LOVING ALL IRANIANS! That is unbelievable!!! I have never seen this ever happening inside Iran without a negative consequence and back lash from the I.R. regime! (I pray for his safety, health and success!)
I have never seen in the past 30 years a single Iranian with such a job offer within Iran and the Islamic regime to be so brave to talk his heart and mind so honestly and directly without any fear! An Iranian who would praise and love Iran only not Islamic Republic! An Iranian with so much public exposure inside and outside Iran!!!
He did not mention a single word about Islam, Profit Mohamad, Emam Zamaan, Rahbare Jakesh Angolaab, Shohadaye Eslam , Antari-nejad, Sepahe pasdaraan va Basig and anthing or anybody associated to EVIL Islamic Republic! Just the 3 IFF officials (Taj, kafashian and another one)and rightfully so....
Afshin Ghotbi, Shoma be raasti Sheere Madarat halaalet baashe ay Irani sheer o daleer... You make me and any True Iranian really happy and proud...
Best of luck Emperatoor in reaching the World Cup 2010 in South Africa with Team Melli Iran ....
Zendeh baad Iran, Team Melli va Irani Beedaar...

Ghotbi sounds like a
by BK (not verified) on Mon Apr 27, 2009 12:48 PM PDTgenuinely good guy as well as an intelligent one. How good a coach he will prove to be, I don't know. I guess time will tell. But, he can't be worse than the shocking incompetence and simply atrocious management that the team melli has had to endure in recent years.
I wish him all the best.
