An article has been published in Los Angeles Times about Persian pop music.

There are few mistakes and misrepresentation of the facts in the piece but in general it's useful for those who are not familiar with current situation in Iran.

Regarding the mistakes for example, they have written about Persian instrument Santur "similar to violin", which is actually a joke! I left a comment! :)

I think you mean "LA Times",

I think you mean "LA Times", not "LA based" ! because to be honest for LA it's normal ! :)

What did your censored comment say exactly?

"he first learned to play on the santur, an Iranian version of a violin"

embarrassing for an LA based writer, if not corrected.

Asdollah: violin, Hossein: Santur, Jahangir: Tombak.

BTW Los Angeles Times has cencored my comment and has not corrected the mistake either! professional journalism! :)

You have Asadollah right.

Hossein Malek: Santoor.

Jahangeer Malek: tonbak.

Also Abdollah Malek: tonbak

Aasadollah, Hossein and Abdollah were brothers.

Hossein (may still be alive, pushing 90. Pejman do you happen to know?) also built santoor and violion, and to my knowledge never confused the two :)

If remember it correctly, Asadolah Malet played the violin and Jahangeer malek played Santur.  Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yolanda, you are absolutely right; santur is something else.

Both santur and violin have strings and bridges! That is the only thing I know!

One solution to the puzzle, "what do santoor and violin have in common, (besides both being muscial instruments)?"

1. Can you name which Malek played which instrument?

2. Can you give other solutions?

Thank you, P_T_B_A!~

I think Santur sounds more beautiful than xylophone 'cause the sound lingers longer in the air!

Apparently the writer is not Iranian!

I have no clue which Western instrument santur is similar to, but if I try really hard to make a far-fetched connection, I will say santur is similar to "xylophone"!
