Oldest Auschwitz survivor dies

Oldest Auschwitz survivor dies (bbc)

The oldest known survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp has died aged 108 in Debno, north-west Poland, officials say.

A teacher, Antoni Dobrowolski was imprisoned for giving secret lessons during Germany's occupation of Poland.

Mr Dobrowolski was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the Nazi concentration camp in 1942.

He was later transferred to the Gross Rosen and Sachsenhausen camps in Germany, before being freed in 1945.

"Auschwitz was worse than Dante's hell," he said in a video made when he was 103.

Education for Poles was restricted to just four years during the Nazi occupation, in an effort to suppress Polish culture.

Mr Dobrowolski was part of an underground effort to continue education for children.

Approximately one million people were killed by the Nazis at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The owners of a new Indian clothing store called Hitler say they will rename it after receiving complaints.

Rajesh Shah, one of the shop's co-owners, told the BBC there would be a new name "tomorrow or the day after".

Jews in the city of Ahmedabad, where the shop opened last month, said using the Nazi dictator's name was offensive. Israeli diplomats also raised the issue with the Gujarat state government.

The owners said they did not know who Adolf Hitler was when the shop opened.

Hungary arrests 'Nazi criminal'  (bbc)

Hungarian authorities have taken Nazi war crimes suspect Laszlo Csatary into custody for questioning, prosecutors have said.

He is number one on the Nazi-hunting Simon Wiesenthal Center's wanted list and is accused of assisting in the murder of 15,700 Jews.

Last week, reporters from British newspaper The Sun found the 97-year-old living in Budapest.

Prosecutors reportedly want him to be held under house arrest.

This will enable the authorities to confiscate his passport.

They said that, considering his age, he is in good physical and mental health.
