Kaleme: Ali Nejati, a member of the Board of Directors of the Haft Tapeh Sugar Cane Company Workers' Trade Union, has been in prison since May 2009 for his work towards organizing workers of the Haft Tapeh Sugar Cane Company and attempting to set up a trade union. The company sacked him in September 2009.
Ali Nejati was released from prison on May 16 for a short medical furlough, due to his deteriorating state of health. The cause of Ali Nejati's poor health is his three-year imprisonment. Ali Nejati is currently serving a one-year prison term. Intelligence officers arrested Ali Nejati at his home in March 2009, following revival of the Haft Tapeh Sugar Cane Company Workers' Trade Union in October 2008.
Members of the Union's Board of Directors were immediately put under increased pressure, facing multiple arrests and interrogations. Members of the Union's Board of Directors were put on trial at the Dezfoul Revolutionary Court on February 17 and 23, 2009 on charges of propaganda against the state.
The court issued a one-year sentence for all Union Board Members and banned them from attending any labor activities and participating in labor union elections for three years. Ali Nejati's wife, Shahnaz Segvand, was summoned to a Shoush Court on September 10 and put on trial on charges of "propaganda against the state through contacting and interviewing with foreign radio stations," "publishing lies," and "creating public anxiety." Pending the outcome of her trial, she was released on bail.
Ali Nejati's wife had given interviews about her husband's poor health conditions.
