Leila Tavassoli: Prisoner of the day

Jailed for participating in demonstrations

CHHR: Leila Tavassoli appeared at Evin Prison today, October 22, 2012, to begin serving her two-year prison sentence.

Branch 28 of Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Leila Tavassoli to two years in prison on charges of participating in the June 15, 2009 and December 27, 2009 (Ashura) demonstrations, and interviewing with Radio Farda and BBC as an eyewitness to the death of Shahram Farajizadeh, a protester who was killed when a police vehicle hit and drove over his body on December 27, 2009.

Leila Tavssoli was arrested on December 28, 2009 after Intelligence Ministry forces went to her father, Mohammad Tavassoli's home and took her with them.

A member of Iran's Freedom Movement group, Leila Tavassoli is daughter of Mohammad Tavassoli, Head of the group's Political Office, and niece of Ebrahim Yazdi, leader of Freedom Movement. Leila Tavassoli has been taken to Evin Prison several times since the disputed 2009 presidential election, each time serving several months.
