Some declaration!

Some declaration!

Amidst the cold,

the rain, the pains

of growing old

I search your warmth

for my reluctant sleep.

I asked as a teenager

remember back then?

if I'd always be alone.

With jewelery eyes

you stared and said no.

I'll always be humbled

by the mystery of

your alien race,

mesmerizing by gaze or

by rumour instead.

I'll always love you

whether you exist

or embody another

salty or soft skin

at the edge of my bed.

Azadeh Azad

exquisite

Soft and warm, like love itself.

Dear jamh: I don't see why you should have felt quilty. There is no contrast between romantic love and dying on the streets of Cairo or Tehran for freedom. They have something in common, named pain. They come from the same place in our psyche.

Thank you for sharing your lovely poem.

Guilty

by jamh on

In all honesty, I felt guilty after I submitted it. I meant for it to appear on Valentine's Day but then the whole Middle East lit up with protests. And here I was with my little poem about love, selfish love at that. It did come pretty, as romantically hopeless as it is, in the middle of far more important matters. Thank you for your kind words. May one day our biggest problem be love.
